[libreoffice-users] MS Works import

2011-08-11 Thread Dave Sergeant
LibreOffice 3.4 is advertised as supporting import of MS Works files,
but a search of the archives of this list shows very little about it. I
have a colleague who has a rather large (66Mb) .wps file with loads of
pictures that he wants to open on his Mac, and I suggested LO as an
easy way.

A quick play with my own LO (3.4.1) on Windows XP was inconclusive. I
found a few sample .wps text documents on the web. Two of them opened
OK, but had no formatting. The third opened as a blank document. A .wdb
spreadsheet that I had been sent in the past also opened as a blank
text document.

How much experience of people had of Works import and does it actually
work, or is it as I seem to be finding rather buggy?

Thanks Charlie for that. I have just updated to 3.4.2 to see if that
would change things, but it did not. And yes, I DO have the legacy
filters installed, which you need for the old .sxw etc formats but I
don't think they are needed for Works.

The documents on writersedge were in fact the ones I had found myself.
There are three .wps files on there, and these all open fine, complete
with formatting, bolding etc in MS Word Viewer.

In LO 3.4.2:
cad7593009.wps - opens blank, if I look at the properties pane it
claims it has 1 page with 0 characters.
fot4813409.wps and mot6312910.wps open correctly as plain text but all
the bolding, italics, paragraph indents, and other formatting is
missing. They look totally different from how they do in Wordview.

I wonder if it has changed between v3.3 and v3.4 or maybe it is a
Windows issue?

It is clickable in my email copy (Pegasus Mail)...

It is known to work correctly in LO3.3 series and seems to have
appeared in v3.4. Somebody has just commented that it works also in GO-

[libreoffice-users] Re: export sql to odb?

2011-08-15 Thread Dave Sergeant
Perhaps drifting off thread a little. I have a DBF database which dates
back many years - in fact to Lotus Works in MS DOS days. It works well
via LO Base, once one has worked out how to do it, which is far from
obvious. I have often wondered whether it is worth converting this to a
native LO database, ie on the lines of your mentioned HyperSQL. I guess
it is not, and in fact I would guess that most users only use Base as
an interface to other database formats.

The 'Help' in LO, practically identical to that in OOo, is far from
helpful and is pretty short of practical guidance. Every time I look at
it it leaves me confused. Maybe an 'idiots guide' to using Base in real
life situations, as part of the installation, is long over due. It
would reduce all these sorts of threads.

[libreoffice-users] Re: JRE v7.0 ?

2011-08-25 Thread Dave Sergeant
PARTS of Base require Java, ie to link to a new external database or
set up new Queries. But it is not required with those databases once
they have been configured.

I was prompted to enable Java last week when I added a new external DBF
database and queries. I have now disabled it (makes loading of LO
faster) and can still access that database.

When I upgraded from 3.4.1 to 3.4.2 the other week I got an alert to
enable Java during the installation process. Not sure what triggered
it, and I have never had this before when upgrading either OO or LO.

Do you mean 73kbits/sec or 73kBytes/sec? On my 8Mb/s connection I
downloaded the windows version (188Mb) in 4 minutes at 800kBytes/sec.
On that basis at 73kbits/sec it would take 400 minutes, or at
73kBytes/sec 40 minutes. If you started yesterday you should have
finished by now! Dialup speeds are around 36kbits/sec or 3.7kBytes/sec,
rather slower.

What on earth has javascript to do with this issue? This is a JAVA
issue. Any vulnerabilities in javascript only affect javascript, which
is a totally different kettle of fish and doesn't even form part of LO.

I remain puzzled by this thread. I have Java 1.6.0.26 installed and
that works just fine with LO 3.4.3 on Windows XP SP3. The suggestion to
deliberately install old potentially insecure versions of Java is very
bad advice, not to mention the copyright infringements of hosting it on
personal web space.

This list seems to suffer from long sections of quoted text with
sometimes just a single line of new stuff right at the bottom (eg. 'I
agree'). Provided people cut out all but what is relevant to their
reply I personally don't mind whether it is top, bottom or
interspersed. But as one with a casual interest in most of the posts,
the ability to quickly see the gist without having to scroll down
several page worths is vital. I am told by the way that top posting is
far preferable to disabled people using reading aids, as they hardly
want all the old stuff spoken by their machine before they get to the
new stuff.

[libreoffice-users] Subject lines - another gripe...

2011-09-08 Thread Dave Sergeant
I use Pegasus Mail and view the posts threaded, which by and large
works excellently. No need to quote lots in mails as it is very easy to
locate the original mails.

But Pegasus Mail truncates subject lines, as displayed in folder views,
to 35 characters, something that will be changed in a later version of
Pegasus but not for a while yet. Each email on this list is prefixed
with [libreoffice-users] together with various [re:], [fwd:] and other
things. Net result is that there are very few characters left out of
the 35 to accurately thread on, and I get all sorts of totally
different things threaded together.

If the list admin changed this to something like [lo-users] or even
[lou] it would make threading far more reliable.

Moan over...

Yes, there are two ways of threading. Pegasus chooses to do it purely
from the subject line, and is unlikely to change. Pegasus is an
excellent email program (would recommend it to those looking at an
alternative to Outlook, but it doesn't do scheduling/calendar) but is a
mature product. David Harris the writer is unlikely to do changes just
to keep libreoffice users happy... (although it is rumoured that the 35
character clipping will go when v5 is released, probably still a year
away).

Thanks for the suggestions Tom, I will persue the steering discuss
list.

I think that single paragraph explains why this thread has become so
heated. YOU are reading this list on a NEWSGROUP. But the list is also
available as a EMAIL LIST and an archive of that same EMAIL LIST on
Nabble. I would hazard a guess that the vast majority are subscribed to
the email list or view it on Nabble, and as such consider it as an
email list and not a newsgroup.

Newsgroup people have shown over the years to have different practices
than emailers. Bottom posters probably predominate, also the practice
of long quotes seems far more prevalent there. And noting the comments
about threading, most newsgroup readers do it via the header
information. Email clients do it in various ways and I suspect Pegasus
is far from unique in doing if from the subject line - and many email
programs have never heard of threading...

I do receive a number of lists via newsgroups, using Gravity. But I by
far prefer email so this is my chosen option for this list.

We are never going to agree on these issues due the huge differences in
opinion between the newsgroup, email and forum people. So let us close
these threads immediately and accept our differences.

This one is easy to answer. Due to an issue with fraudulent
certificates from the Dutch company Diginotar, Firefox has removed the
Diginotar root certificate from its certificate store. Other browsers
have acted similarly, ie there was a Windows update to achieve the same
on IE. Since you are based in the Netherlands I guess your documents
are validated against Diginotar certificates. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigiNotar

For many of us not in your country we have never encountered a
Diginotar certificate and it was not even in my certificate store in
Opera.

Not sure what the answer is, but this seems to be a case of unexpected
consequences of a fairy radical update to Firefox. Your internal
certificates are clearly properly issued, and to block them because of
a few fraudulent ones you are only going to encounter on dodgey sites
seems a bit OTT.
