[libreoffice-users] new version of LO gives gibberish for excel file.

2013-03-01 Thread David B Teague sr

Hi
I just downloaded an excel file from
http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxfacts/displayafact.cfm?Docid=205
The file is the excel version of Historical Source of Revenue as Share
of GDP.
The newest, recommended version of LO opens the file as gibberish:
LibreOffice Version 3.6.5.2 (Build ID: 5b93205)

My system runs Windows 7, 64 bit, AMD quad core, 4 GB RAM.

Can anyone explain or help me fix this?

A workaround is to fetch MS' Excel Viewer, then copy from that to a
table in Writer for my document, but I would prefer to use LO for as
nearly everything as possible.

Warmest Regards
David Teague

Hi All.

I had responded, but failed to "reply-all" that is usually automatic
with mailing lists. In any event it did not happen. Here is my response,
sent to Dries Feys only but intended for all of you kind folks.

I installed the MS Excel Viewer, and now the file opens flawlessly. I
have NO idea why.

HI Dries, and Stuart, and others:

I just tried it again, and it opens "flawlessly" with the latest stable
LO Version 3.6.5.2 (Build ID: 5b93205) on my Windows 7, 64 bit system.
I wonder what the heck was wrong. The only thing I did in the interim
was to fetch the MS Excel Viewer. I wonder if something came with that
that enabled LO, a font or something that enabled LO.
Many thanks for prompt response.

Method,
Create and open empty LO Writer file.
Select all in page with control-A
Right click in page, choose copy
Go to LO
Right click, choose paste

After a wait of perhaps 10 seconds all images appear, however the
LibreOffice green header image does not appear, I get text only there.

I realize this is an earlier version of LO, and not XP, yet I hope this

Why would LibreOffice what to go backwards? The last time that OOo code
was introduced into the LO code there were big parts that had to be
redone. LO already has features that OOo does not have. The way it
stands those features will not make it into OOo/AOOo unless the
developers donate the code needed directly to AOOo. With the current
licensing setup LO code can not be used in AOOo, though LO is free to
use any and all code from AOOo. Seems quite simple to me.

Andy

Thanks. Your answer helps me better understand! LO does seem to be
better than OO.o, though I only replaced OO.o 3.1 with LO 3.3.x.

I wish they would stop (gratuitously? that may be unkind) moving things
around in the UI though. I like learning new bells and whistles, and
serious new features, but I hate to have to hunt for the old ones, and
wonder if "that" useful old feature has been removed.

I hate Apple worse than I hate Windows and Microsoft, but I cannot but

odt files are zip archives. Changing the extension to txt is almost
guaranteed to get you nowhere. If you make a copy and change the
extension to .zip, and if you succeed in unzipping it, you will find
interesting things in there.

The file Content.xml contains your text with xml stuff, but if you work
at it you may be able to extract your data. There may be extractor
programs that will do this for you.

The downside in all this is that if the odt file is damaged, the zip
archiver may not be able to open it.

I wish you all the luck in the world.

Using your data, I used

then chose "unformatted text" from the dialog. The dialog then wanted
to know what the separator was. I tried "space" and it inserted data
into cells but your data has a number spaces so I got many blank cells.

I tried to replace multiple spaces with a comma, and that worked, but
your data doesn't have a consistent number of separating spaces so that
did not appear to be useful. I played with it, and I believe if you
separate the data items with a single space, a tab, or something that
Calc likes for a separator you may have some luck with "paste special".

Hope this helps.

I simply drag the "pop ups" to a menu bar, where they become a part of

[libreoffice-users] Do LO installers have Java Runtime?

I have three questions: Do I want to install LO 3.4.3 or LO 3.3.4? Why?
and
OO.o was available with or without Java in the installer. The Java
Runtime with OO.o was always old, so I always fetched the OO.o
installation without Java runtime. I find no mention of whether LO has
java runtime with the installer. Could someone tell me about this?

Then OO.o makes more use of Java than LO does?

More questions:

Some say LO versions have problems recognizing some versions of Java.
Here, LO 3.3.04 runs with jre-6u19-windows-i586-s.
Should I expect trouble with LO 3.4.3 with this version of jre?

LO people are working on converting the codes that need Java to ones

be honest, would you want your software package to work based upon
someone else's software "package" to work? I.E., when they have
issues, then you would as well?

Now that OOo no longer is part of Oracle's product line, will Apache
continue to use the JRE as part of the package, or will they go LO's
route and replace the coding that require it. I believe LO is
replacing some of that code with Python based code instead of Java based.

Many thanks for this further information. I'll fetch LO 3.4.3 and
install it. For the present, I'll leave jre 6u19 in place, and look for
a Windows version of Open JDK to replace Oracle Java.

I'll be pleased to leave Oracle to its own money-grubbing devices.

The fact that 20% of the features of MS Office (and by implication, LO

me that OO.o should identify that 20% of features and modularize OO.o or
LO or what have you to include that 20% and make the other 80% of the
features available as extensions.

I'd like comments on this idea.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Where is Find? (Writer 3.4.3)

2011-10-18 Thread David B Teague sr

I don't want the find toolbar displayed all the time.

I can close it with the tool menu (that I get to through the small,
inobvious triangle that I only found because Stuart told us about it in
the message quoted below), but the blank bar is still there eating
screen space. I can close the find tool bar completely with

view|toolbar
unselect Find

I don't want the find bar occupying screen real estate all the time, I
don't want it there by default, and it is a bit of a hassle to go to the
view menu to remove it.

The find tool should not be there all the time. It wasn't in earlier OO
and LO versions. The find tool needs a "close button".

How do I easily make the find tool go away after use?

David

Jerry,

Looks to be functional, but is state full in Windows 7, so it could be undocked
somewhere in your UI that you can see as Cor suggests.

Use the View --> Toolbars --> Find menu to toggle the Find box On.

Then grab any toolbar and drag it to undock --> open the tool menu (down
triangle) and select Dock ALL Toolbars.

That should return the active Find toolbar to its default docked location and
allow+F activation.

Hello all,

It seems that LibO 3.4.3 cannot open password protected Word 2010 file.
Attached is a Word file saved with Mac Word 2010.

The password for opening and modifying is "123456".

Any ideas?

The attachment did not survive. You will have to post it somewhere or
use something similar to "YouSendIt".

[libreoffice-users] installing 64 bit Libreoffice

2017-07-23 Thread David B Teague sr

Hi Gentlefolk:

I have 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium on a Gigabyte MoBo with AMD Phenom
II X4 840 processor and 4 GB Ram.

I wanted to upgrade my 32 bit LibreOffice to 64 bit 5.3.4 "fresh". For
32 bit upgrades, I have always (successfully) installed over the
previous version, but I was concerned about installing a 64 bit version
where the current one is 32 bits. So I removed local help then the 32
bit program. I then successfully installed the 64 bit version and help.

My question is, was it necessary to remove the 32 bit version? I found
no cautions about upgrading a 32 bit version with a 64 bit version in
the notes.

Thank you all for a wonderful piece of software.

Warmest Regard
David Teague

[libreoffice-users] Underlinng? easy. How do I overline?

2017-09-07 Thread David B Teague sr

Libreoffice community:

Underlining is a common task in LO, and it is easy. Control U. But I
need to overline (also called overscore or overbar), some text, in my
case digits. Overlining is common in scientific fields, and I use it to
indicate a shift, a motion of the hand, on double bass music.

How do I do this? I'd like to have a font, not unlike the underline
font. (I hope I'm not missing something here.)

[libreoffice-users] Installation failure of LibreOffice 6.0.5

2018-07-24 Thread David B Teague sr

Subject: Installation failure of LibreOffice 6.0.5
64 bit W7, Firefox 52.9

I fetched LibreOffice_6.0.5_x64.msi from www.libreoffice.org/download/

I removed the old version prior to installing a 6.0.5.  The installer
started, offered the usual questions, then failed before the progress
bar had moved at all. No UAC dialog offered. I fetched a second copy
which failed in the same way.

Next different mirror:
http://mirror2.layerjet.com/tdf/libreoffice/stable/6.0.5/win/x86/LibreOffice_6.0.5_Win_x86.msi
(us, prio 100)

This was substantially slower (15 min.) than the utexas mirror (5 min.)
This file is only 246 MB compared to the utexas copy 262 MB.

This copy also fails, same mode.

'Net search results suggest the .msi file must be run as administrator.
I have administrator priv, but the UAC dialog isn't offered when I
attempt to run, as it does with every other .exe or .msi file I have tried.

Shift - right click  offers option of  "run as another user" which
requires an id and password, but neither the administrator nor  my
account have password(s) set. The dialog refuses to accept administrator
as the user and a blank password isn't allowed.

But for the fact that a UAC dialog isn't offered when I attempt to run
the installer, I'd say this is a Windows problem.

In any event, you all know more about LO & Windows than I (at 81) am
likely to learn in my time left on this Earth.

Help, please.

Meanwhile, I'll reinstall the old version.

Please copy me with your responses.

[libreoffice-users] SOLVED was Re: Installation failure of LibreOffice 6.0.5

2018-07-24 Thread David B Teague sr

SOLVED: Installation "failure" for 64 bit LO 6.0.5

This Window 7 computer blocks some installer files. You find that in
file "Properties." Your mileage may vary with other Windows versions.

A fix for this:
Right click LO .msi installer
At the bottom find properties.
Click Properties
At the bottom of the General tab find Security, and this information:
"This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help
protect this computer."  There is a button "Unblock"

Click "Unblock"
This will enable the installer to start.

Notes:
6.0.5 took about 5 minutes on my machine to produce the UAC dialog. Wait
for it.
Total install time, about 20 minutes, including to install the 6.0.5
local help files.

Thanks to Brian Barker who promptly answered. He pointed out that I
fetched the x86 version from the mirror and that accounted for the
difference in file size.  I should have realized that. My lapse.

[libreoffice-users] Question about Installation glitch upgrading from LO 5.x to LO 6.0.6.2

2018-11-06 Thread David B Teague sr

Hi LibreOffice Users:

My system:
64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium
LibreOffice 6.0.6.2
off line help for LO 6.0.6

Installation glitch upgrading from LO 5.x to LO 6.0.6.2

Started Installer, process displayed UAC dialog.  I answered "Yes"

Installer proceeded up to a point, then failed, stating the installer
did not have sufficient privilege to access C:\Program Files\LibreOffice

I clicked "retry" several times to no avail, then backed out. A retry
also failed. In casting about for a solution, I happened to reboot.

Then I recalled that inaccessible files are sometimes removed or made
accessible after a reboot. I retried installation, LO 6.0.6.2 installed
quickly along with off line help

My Question: Should I have known this might or would occur?  And could
this glitch have been predicted and users warned?

Re: [libreoffice-users] I have been using open office, libre office and open everything since 1985

2019-06-30 Thread David B Teague sr

I started using StarOffice a ways back, then OpenOffice.org, then
Libreoffice since Oracle bought Sun.
I do not now have, nor have I ever had, stability problems, except
_sometimes_ when I install a new release over the old one.  Now, I
_always_ remove the old version before installing a new version. Never a
problem since.

I note that I need to install a new version.
