Any more recent than 6_24 often causes the types of problems you describe. Can you switch off java completely Tools - Options - Java or does LO grumble when you do that? In the meantime I also tried 3.5, but the same problems occur there. It might have something to do with hardware acceleration / antialiasing. At least I found several posts in different forums whith users who have the same problems. In one forum someone stated that disabling Antialiasing and Hardware Acceleration helped. I will try this.
