Do you remember, in which component you did this?
I know, that you can type those names within Math, (the equation
editor) and the corresponding symbol will then appear.

You can insert a Math object in any other component like Writer,
Calc, Impress...

I don't know of a way to type %alpha and get then the greek letter
within "plain" Writer.

Could it be that you spelled it wrong, like you did above?

Or why not just entering the Unicode for it (α=U+03B1)? You didn't
mention your operating system and desktop environment, but Gnome users
type Ctrl+Shift+u 03b1 Enter.
You could also add it to your auto-correction table, but that is not
as convenient in some situations.

There are other methods as well, but that's probably not what this was
all about…

Hi

You can select in Writer or Calc, menu:

Insert-Symbol-Subset-Basic Greek

and there you found alpha symbol and other like this.

My bad luck :-(

It might be. Two days back I tried on LibreOffcie, but it failed, and
need to shift to another PC for using it. But today, I worked. It must
be spelling mistake :-(

Remembering unicode is not easy for me :-(

Thanks for informing it.

It was long equations and I always found to right equations like:

E = m times c^2
%alpha = %pi over %delta times %gamma

or to make use of dmath

It sounds like what could be partly done with the Compose Special
Character extension. Typing the Unicode character value to get the
letter/glyph, where %alpha is a shortcut to that.

it has been an interesting thread.  I'm sure quite a few people learned things
they wouldn't have known otherwise.  Also it's good to hear you solved the

All good :

Just to add to what you've mentioned: To insert a Math object into
Writer you can do the following:
Insert > Object > Formula

You can actually type the formula first, select what you've typed, and
then insert a formula object (this "converts" the text to a formula).
You can also assign a short-cut key to "Insert > Object > Formula" if
you don't want to use the mouse every time. Just be careful, there
are 2 "insert formula" commands in Writer. The other (assigned to F2)
creates a Calc-style formula that actually calculates an equation,
rather than displaying a formula.

Another alternative is to type the letters "fn" (without the quotes)
on a new line and press F3 (Run Autotext Entry).

Stephan
