Brian Barker I think the real point is the MS is not providing a reasonable upgrade for many users. Both in terms of cost and ease. Many with XP can not run W8 at all and have three options: continue to use XP, replace the computer which is still working, or replace the OS with a Linux distro. Since most Linux distros are free, replacing XP with Linux is the cheapest option and viable for many. Also, there is no direct upgrade path from XP to W7 and I assume this is true for W8 also. Thus, XP has to installed first then it is wiped out by the new OS which means all the applications and data must be reinstalled (after first saving the data). I just copied my system to the new drive and then moved to the new motherboard and it works fine. With Linux, drivers also tend to be supported much longer than in Windows, so that old hardware will generally continue to work just fine. For example, I have an Epson scanner, which I bought several years ago. It worked with both Linux and XP. Brian, Thank you for the clarification. I do want to be fair, even in my anger. My apologies to M$ concerning notice of the expiration of XP. That said, as a typical Windows user, it never occurred to me to go to a Microsoft website to determine the lifecycle for XP. When I bought my computer, it never occurred to me that Windows versions even had expiration dates and there was certainly nothing in the information provided me with the computer to indicate that. Again, not necessarily blaming M$ for the lack of information, just saying I never saw it when purchasing my computer. By contrast, I obtained Ubuntu by downloading it. That process inherently took me to the 12.04LTS website where I could clearly and easily see Ubuntu's plans for 12.04. This doesn't make the Canonical folks more virtuous than M$, but for my experience, it made for clearer information up front. Agreed, Jay. I learned about the XP support expiration on the evening news a few months ago. Until then, it never occurred to me that M$ would stop supporting its OS. That thought wasn't on my radar screen, which probably (and fairly) says more about me and my (lack of) computer knowledge than it does M$. But, I find it truly offensive when M$ ceases to support XP and then suggests that I buy a new computer so that I can have 8.1. I would buy a Mac before doing that. Hi :) There is nothing actually stopping you from continuing to use Xp. Something like 30% of desktops are still on Xp. Just take care to avoid phishing scams etc. Also consider a dual-boot on it. If you want to give a GnuLinux a go then it's best to download (torrent if poss) a few different versions. Ubuntu makes it easy to make a LiveUsb to test-drive the distro. On 2 of 'my' really ancient machines all different versions of Mint crashed or were horribly slow but that says more about my machines than about Mint. On a merely fairly old machine it flew along and looked really nice. Hi :) hah, ok so Ubuntu 14.04's Startup Disk Creator only worked for a few of the distros i downloaded. No immediately obvious pattern wrt family etc. Bodhi was amazing! A tad empty but looks intriguing, kinda reminds me of antiX a bit but is completely different. Mint Xfce and Mint Mate and Kubuntu were really fast! I'd heard the folks at Kde were working hard at making it faster and lighter but never believed it until i saw it racing along there!
