you have a rather huge percentage of i/o wait. this could be caused by slow disks writing the kannel log, or cheap rtl81** nics doing polling. try to use faster disks, or intel / 3com and so on nics. Re: Using http interface and GSM modem - sleep required?
On Thu, Nov 03, 2005 at 04:06:38PM +0100, Lars-Hendrik Schneider wrote: Hello, I want to send personalized SMS to a huge number of different recipients (so one message for each number) using a Siemens TC35 modem. Therefore I currently make http-requests (using the http-interface) like this from a shell script: http://smsbox.host.name:13013/cgi-bin/sendsms?username=foopassword=barto=0123456text=Hello+world (taken from the user's guide), replacing the to= and text=-values everytime. The question: Is it necessary to set a sleep between each request or will the modem slow down the throughput automatically? Normally the request is waiting for the Accepted for delivery before continuing - is this enough to make sure, that the modem is not overloaded? Or is there another way to deliver the SMS through the GSM modem making sure that the SMS are accepted by the GSM network provider? kannel will do queueing for you. your performance/throughput may vary from several seconds for a message up to more than a minute, depending on your provider. btw, i've found the tc35 behaving rather nasty compared to simple nokia mobiles or wavecoms. Re: cant send the fake sms using kannel
at first you should increase the debug level, so you can see in bearerbox.log the actual sending. second if you send binary messages, some phones may forget them as a 'security feature' if you didn't turn it on. I didn't have the time to look into this closer yet. I think the new driver behaves a bit different... The first solution is not to enable direct routing to the te by initializing the modem by at+cnmi as Jan suggested I switched on the access.log. It seems as the modem receives the SMS several times from the provider and that's why serves every SMS as a new one (correctly). In my opinion the reason for this is that the Wavecom does not answer to the mobile network correctly that the SMS was (already) received - so the provider tries to deliver the SMS to the mobile device (my Wavecom of course) again after a few minutes. I think this is going in yours (Wilfrieds) direction, and it makes sense to me to see this as the reason for the re-sending of the SMS. I just read a little bit about CNMA (which is obviously responsible for sending ACK to the network when a message was received successfully, if I got it right). yes, it doesn't send the right ack to the provider. The first solution is not to enable direct routing to the te by initializing the modem by at+cnmi How can this be done? Perhaps with something like this: init-string = AT+CNMI=1,2,0,1,1 AT+CPMS=SM which was taken from the Siemens modem in modems.conf. Perhaps someone can point me to the right syntax here. Are there any default settings that might work with my Wavecom? (As a fallback I also own a Siemens TC35, I hope this can cope with the new driver(s) in kannel 1.4.0. Next week I fly to Arabia and it should work with one modem (Wavecom or Siemens) reliably...) greetz from Bonn/Germany, Lars-Hendrik Greets from Colgne, Germany ;-) Wilfried Goesgens

this all seems, as if your modem doesn't respond at al. are you shure, it operates at this device and with this speed? Best is to use minicom to check this out. the modem should answer OK if you type AT at it. When I try to run any of the executables, I get: This application has failed to start because cygcrypto.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Indeed there is no cygcrypto.dll anywhere under c:\cygwin, though there is a cygcrypt-0.dll under c:\cygwin\bin. I've looked in the Cygwin installer and it's not obvious where to get this from. Any clues would be gratefully received! this library should be in the openssl package. install it using the cygwin setup tool. Wilfried Goesgens

When reading bearerbox's access log, sometimes a message queued for sending fails to send and my configuration in kannel doesn't keep trying to send the SMS message that failed. It just seems to ignore that the program failed to send, showing only as error through the standard output. I would like to know if it's possible to have bearerbox try to send the message when something like that happens, maybe at a latter time, maybe immediately, for a specified period of time, or even to persist till it manages to successfully send it. you may try my newer at driver available through http://tar.gzipped.org/gateway.tar.bz2 please see the ml archive on further information. And as an added question, I was wondering if there's an easy way to convert the http-like message output that kannel from group sms-service %s I think, to a plain text output to execute as arguments to a binary executable. Perhaps someting inherently built from kannel where I can pass as an argument, or write to a file, or simply display via standard output. I basically want to convert the %##s for symbols and the use of + for spaces and other things. there are url-encode and decode functions in most web related scripting languages, such as php, java, perl, c# and so on. take a look at them, pass the string through such a function. --
