New kernel will not boot after upgrade from fedora-21 to fedora-22

2016-05-23 Thread Bill Perkins

I have this system that I have been using that was running Fedora 21.
I just updated it today (Monday) to Fedora 22. It is an old Dell
Optiplex GX620 with two 2TB disk drives set up with two partitions
each in a RAID One configuration. LVM2 runs on top of the second
partition with several logical volumes. This system had been running
just fine before I did the upgrade. After the upgrade, the system will
not boot using one of the new Fedora 22 kernels. It boots just fine
using one of the old Fedora 21 kernels that did not get replaced during
the upgrade.

I can get the system up using one of the new kernels, but I have to
wait until it stops at a Dracut prompt. I then manual run "mdadm --
assemble --scan" to get the RAID One partitions assembled, and "lvm
vgchange -a y" to get the Volume Group built. After that, I issue an
"exit" and the system completes the boot process. I need to figure out
why this system will not boot without intervention. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

I have tried to rebuild the initramfs with dracut, no joy doing that.

Here is some of the data:

Oh, the policy is set in my T-Bird client. I don't think gmail itself offers
this.

But since I use IMAP all clients I use see the same contents.

(Sorry to have left off that detail. A bit distracted this AM)

I use the message filtering of gmail to put messages from mailing lists in their
individual folders which are labeled with the name of the list. Then I simply
access them
via IMAP capable email clients. This way the lists are available no matter
what platform
I'm using at the time.

I've used this method for *years* and it serves my needs. YMMV.

Mailing lists, I meant.

I was hoping someone knew of some super cool way of dealing
with this dated messaging system.

I'll look into how IMAP might help me manage it all. Gmail
claims they 'do' mailing lists, so maybe there's a way to
make it do what I want.

Most digests are now in MIME format, so replying to a post is easy with
a modern mail client, while preserving threading.

However using digests isn't going to reduce the amount of mail you get.
It's really an obsolete method with little to recommend it any more.
Just subscribe normally and use filters. With IMAP you don't even need
to download the messages you aren't interested in.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362105

One of those problem bugs as its works fine here on F23 and now since
upgrading on F24 as well. Using nouveau here.

This bug report is the issue. Looking at the report it seems to be
happening across a wide range of distributions and video drivers, and
even the same nvidia driver works for some people and not others. It
seems to me that it is probably an issue with hardware acceleration
and the level of hardware acceleration available on the video card.

Yes I think you could be right there. So many variables in this bug, its
a tough one.

I am having trouble reading the version numbers in the repositories to
identify what version of plasma I have installed and even what
packages constitute plasma itself. I think I have plasma 5.6.4
installed but I'm not sure.

If you fire up Kinfocenter you can see which Versions of Plasma, QT
and more

you are running.
Thanks Colin, I'll have to install that program and try it out. I don't
appear to have it as when I enter Kinfocenter in a shell it tells me the
command doesn't exist.

Steve

Given that from the bug report the issue seems to be an upstream plasma
issue, is the fedora kde mail list is that the right list to be querying
a fix Eta?
I thought I had the proprietary nvidia drivers from the rpmfusion
repositories(both the kmod and akmod packages), but when I use yumex to
do a search for nvidia, the only package I can find that appears to be
installed is the X11 nouveau driver from the rpmfusion non-free testing
repository(unless the packages are named differently in the F23
repositories and don't have nvidia in their descriptions). In F22 I was
using the kmod and akmod packages so it looks like the upgrade from F22
to F23 via Fedup has removed the 'proprietary' nvidia drivers.

Posting to the Fedora message boards

2016-05-23 Thread Peter Gueckel
While a long-time user, I never liked getting all of the messages in my email
box, considering that only 5% or so are relevant to me. The digest form has the
additional problem of how to reply to a post. Then, I discovered Gmane a few
years back.I was bothered somewhat by using a third party interface and, it
seemed, that not 100% of the posts ever showed up, depending on who posted
where. It has worked well for me, but I had to set up the news program,
typically knode, which also took a fair bit of time. Nothing ever seemed
satisfactory.

This morning I discovered Fedora's own web interface. I never even knew it
existed!!! I think it could be the best solution yet... although sometimes it
seems slow.

What have you found to be he easiest, most convenient, etc. method of accessing
the message boards?

It sounds like the file manager doesn't refresh its list
of files in the current directory after your rename.

What if you force a refresh. Say leave the FM and reenter.
Or switch to several directories and return to the one
containing "bar". Or create another file/directory.
Gee, I wonder if you could get two "bar" files by
creating another one while the FM doesn't acknowledge
the first one.

I haven't tried a link to an application. In my case:

Right-click on Desktop, Create New --> Folder.
Name the folder "foo".
Click on foo, opens File Manager in foo directory. Close that.
Right-click on foo, Rename. "bar"
Click on bar... Error.
(After reboot, clicking on bar works.)

Same thing happens with Create New --> Text File.

This condition exists in my login and my wife's login, since I'm not sure
when.

hi

Are they turned on in pulse? Install pavucontrol if it isn't already
installed, and fire it up. Look at the default device. Is it the
device you want to have as default, the AMD card, and not the hdmi
device?

So, if you set the AMD card as your default in pavucontrol, your
problem should be solved.

tried, do not resolve the problem, mybe with gnome or other DE work ...

The other thing is that each time that the computer boots, devices are
loaded in random order, unless you put a file in /etc/modprobe.d. I
use the name soundcard.conf for the file, and this is what I have in
it. You should be able to modify this for your needs.

tried, adding
"options snd_hda_intel index=0 model=auto" ... but do not work

options snd cards_limit=8
options slots=snd-hda-intel,snd-ice1724,snd-ca0106,snd-hda-intel
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel id="SB"
options snd-hda-intel index=0
alias snd-card-1 snd-ca0106 id="CA0106"
options snd-ca0106 index=1
alias snd-card-2 snd-ice1724 id="Revolution51"
options snd-ice1724 index=2
#alias snd-card-3 snd-cmipci
#options snd_cmipci index=3
alias snd-card-3 snd-hda-intel id="HDMI"
options snd-hda-intel index=3
alias snd-card-7 snd-usb-audio
options snd-usb-audio index=7

Set the AMD sound device as say, device 3, and make it the default in
pavucontrol, and you should be consistent across boots.

The trouble for you is that both of your devices are snd-hda-intel.
There is probably a way to qualify them further in the options slots
line, but I don't know it. So, you might still end up with random
order after a boot even with the file in place. You might be able to
turn off the hdmi device in pavucontrol if you don't use it, and have
only the AMD available, which finesses the problem.

This should get you closer, at least.

This shows that alsa knows about your hardware.

Run alsamixer in a terminal. You should get a single volume control
for the pulseaudio output. Make sure that it is up and not muted.
Press F6 to select a different device and select 0, your HDA device.
Check that the volume controls and switches are set correctly.
Normally, pulseaudio should manage it, but this gives you a chance to
verify and test.
