Routing fail over is not a good reason to totally unconfigure an interface,
especially on machines where there is nowhere else to send packets.
You should just change the default gw, maybe.

Carrier is a local thing, routing ability is a global thing, and trying
to mix the two is wrong. Should my ethernet be unconfigured when
the DSL copper cable in my router is unplugged? So, why should it
be unconfigured when the ethernet cable between my DSL modem and me is?

With these high resolution panels, there is a problem with the size of
tools: for instance, I have a resolution of 1280x1024 and it is
sometimes difficult to catch the sliders of darktable tools, I fear that
it will be almost impossible to catch them with a higher resolution.
Once the devellopers will separate the display of the photos from the
tools to manipulate them (like in gimp), I would like to have the tools
on a screen with a reasonable resolution and the photos on another
screen with a higher resolution. But I am wondering if this possible
because, in that case, I need to be able to move the mouse from a screen
to another

Hello,

If you're looking for a simple and "fast" browser, I would encourage you
to take a look at qutebrowser [0]. It should be "fast enough" for you
since it uses the same backend as chromium.

It's packaged in Fedora :-) [1]

Fedora27: Firefox freezes

2018-01-01 Thread Terry Barnaby
Is anyone else seeing issues with Firefox freezing up for 30secs or more
when web pages are opened in TABS ?

Since the latest Firefox 57 this is happening a lot for me (every 10
mins or so). Seems to lockup while downloading the page. You can still
operate Firefox by clicking on menu's/Tab's etc, but no tab windows have
thier web content updated. Normally the new tabs content are blank, but
sometimes a small amount of the web page is rendered before the freeze.
No obvious high CPU usage when it happens. Its as if the network has
stopped, but other applications such as google-chrome are still working.

This is with Fedora27, KDE Plasma and with an NFS mounted home directory.

I have a similar system (F27, KDE, Windows 10 under KVM/QEMU) and
rpcbind is running. However I haven't reinstalled this system in years,
just updated it, so I've no idea why it's running. In fact I didn't
even notice it was before reading this thread.

I see something similar with FF57 on Centos-7. it tends to go on for
much longer than 30 seconds, and the HD activity light is pegged ON
for the duration. I'm guessing it may be a swap storm, but I don't see
unusually high memory usage in top.

So, no other rpc processes are running making rpcbind unnecessary.

You may want to consider disabling it even though it is a small footprint.

Sorry, I should have added that you had said you've not reinstalled your system
in
years.  So, once rcpbind gets enabled it stays enabled until it is specifically
disabled.  So, it would seem it was enabled by virtue of the "bug" back in 2014
and
not noticed until now.  The bug fix didn't disable it from starting.  That had
to be
done by the end user.

So, while you have the "problem" it isn't because of F27 but simply because
back in
F21 it got enabled and stayed enabled.

I see something similar with FF57 on Centos-7. it tends to go on for
much longer than 30 seconds, and the HD activity light is pegged ON
for the duration. I'm guessing it may be a swap storm, but I don't see
unusually  high memory usage in top.

Well, in my case it is also often longer than 30 secs, not sure how long
as I normally go and do something else while its loading the pages. I
don't think it is disk related, no obvious activity (SSD disk and 16 G
of RAM). No addons and reset all Firefox settings etc. Internet access
here is 80/20 Mbps FTTP and seems solid so I don't think it is Internet
connection related.

But the problem does seems to be network access related, maybe multiple
thread locking issues in Firefox ?

Not Quite OT: ebook readers?

2018-01-01 Thread Beartooth

Onnellista Uutta Voutta! ( = Happy New Year!, I hope.)

What software do people here favor for reading ebooks?

I have a little System76 netbook ("starling" model) which I
bought several years ago (and immediately converted to Fedora) for doing
email in waiting rooms. But the ones I wait in are getting so efficient
that I often don't even get to their wi-fi before my wait is over. So I
usually just carry a book with a good bookmark; but I guess that would
also be a place to try reading an ebook -- and there are vast numbers of
them out there ...

I use calibre for all my ebook needs on linux (but I mostly use it

I had the same problem with FF 57 on Fedora 26; found solution on FF forum:

go to about:config

Naturally, however I a few weeks ago I reported a bug concerning
SElinux problems when starting a KVM/QEMU VM. I remember you commenting
on it at the time. The bug was closed by someone but still exists. I
reported this and it has been reopened. No progress on it has happened
since then and the bug persists. I mention this only to point out that
a closed bug is not always a solved bug.

In the present case of course there's almost certainly no actual bug,
so 'closed' is likely the correct state of affairs.

FWIW, I do not use FF extensively.  It is configured to use a proxy and I only
use it
to access US based media sites.  When I do use it I've not noticed any problems.

You mention your home directory is NFS mounted.  You may want to consider
moving and
creating a symbolic link to ~/.cache/mozilla to local storage.

I see something similar with FF57 on Centos-7. it tends to go
on for
much longer than 30 seconds, and the HD activity light is
pegged ON
for the duration. I'm guessing it may be a swap storm, but I
don't see

Well, in my case it is also often longer than 30 secs, not sure
how long as I normally go and do something else while its loading
the pages. I don't think it is disk related, no obvious activity
(SSD disk and 16 G of RAM). No addons and reset all Firefox
settings etc. Internet access here is 80/20 Mbps FTTP and seems
solid so I don't think it is Internet connection related.

But the problem does seems to be network access related, maybe
multiple thread locking issues in Firefox ?

I don't understand what you mean: is it possible to change a screen

I don't think it is that one. The display is fine all other applications

Have you tried the Firefox Help Site? This may not be Linux related,
and it doesn't hurt to ask.

autofs error : setautomntent: lookup(sss): setautomntent: No such file or directory

2018-01-01 Thread Angelo Moreschini
Hi,

I am trying with autofs, but I get this error when I check the status of
the service:

*"setautomntent: lookup(sss): setautomntent: No such file or directory"*

the full output is:

[angelo_dev@localhost ~]$ sudo systemctl status autofs
● autofs.service - Automounts filesystems on demand
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/autofs.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since Tue 2018-01-02 08:28:29 IST; 7min ago
  Process: 5722 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/automount $OPTIONS --pid-file
/run/autofs.pid (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
 Main PID: 5724 (automount)
   CGroup: /system.slice/autofs.service
   └─5724 /usr/sbin/automount --pid-file /run/autofs.pid

Jan 02 08:28:29 localhost.pluto automount[5724]: setautomntent:
lookup(sss): setautomntent: No such file or directory

I also cannot enter (with command) the directories located on a USB HD
that I try to mount automatically.

To configure autofs I made this :

I added this line to the file /etc/auto.master (that was created at
installation of autofs) :
/-/etc/auto.misc

and these lines to file /etc/auto.misc :
/media/BKx_programmingntfs PRTZ_programming
/media/BKx_data-commonntfs PRTZ_data-common

I also created the partitions
*PRTZ_programming , PRTZ_data-common * on the USB HD that I try to mount

and the mounting points :

*/media/BKx_data-common*

*/media/BKx_programming*

please help me to understand the error and to solve this problem

thank you

Angelo
