Because of Tim's comment, I did a search for any info on this, and
found this video on youtube that addresses exactly this question:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8bhGw4vUFE

No cigar, the fridge just isn't designed to dissipate that kind of heat
on a continuous basis. Saved me the time, money, and effort. :-)

You see monstrous warehouses of Bitcoin computers, and humungous fans

computer
under those conditions. In reality, those computers would probably not
run at all due to overheating in a hot closed environment and

I just did that, and nothing more (I hadn't, yet, got around to making
a rc.local file and putting anything in it), and got this back in
terminal:

# systemctl enable rc-local.service
The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy, RequiredBy, Also, Alias
settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance for template units).
This means they are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.
Possible reasons for having this kind of units are:
1) A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
   .wants/ or .requires/ directory.
2) A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
   a requirement dependency on it.
3) A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
4) In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some
   instance name specified.

My intention was to put this in rc.local, so I didn't have to keep
issuing the commands, as root, every bootup:

#!/bin/sh
#

# plugged in SD CARDs have wrong filedates, this is to correct that:
hwclock --systohc --utc
hwclock --hctosys --utc

BTW, I think you should check the times on this.  If I recall correctly "start"
will
not work on rc-local since it designed to run just once at boot time.

So, I don't think that "systemctl -l start rc-local" can be used as a
diagnostic tool.

Two things that often cause rc.local failures:

1. Having a different $PATH as root than as your normal user.

2. If you are trying to start a long running process
(Like launch a daemon), the "new and improved"
systemd will helpfully kill it off for you
   shortly after it is started.

This has led me to transform my rc.local script into this:

/usr/bin/at -M now <<'HERE' > /dev/null 2>&1
/etc/rc.d/the-real-rc.local
HERE

Then move everything I used to be able to put in rc.local
into the-real-rc.local instead (sheesh!)

Oh yea, silliest thing to check:

Is rc.local executable, does the first line start with #!/bin/sh ?

I'm sure I read that on this list, but it was quite a long time ago so
I may have misunderstood or misremembered. Obviously it was always
static in traditional Unix/Linux systems but with systemd one can never
be sure. Note that the man page recommends it not be used, so I wonder
how long it will continue to be supported.

There's probably a proper way to do that, but until somebody finds it,
put that into a shell script and call it from rc.local.

That's why you use rc.local. It's a shell script called at the end of
boot that you can use for any special or non-standard stuff you want or
need done.

Note that you now have to explicitly enable rc.local to make it run at
boot time:

# systemctl enable rc-local.service

Who told you that? It is a "static" service and need not be enabled.

Before creation of an executable /etc/rc.d/rc.local file

[egreshko@f28k-b1 ~]$ systemctl status rc-local.service

Well, this is interesting:

# systemctl -l start rc-local
# echo $?

#
# systemctl -l status rc-local.service
rc-local.service - /etc/rc.d/rc.local Compatibility
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/rc-local.service; enabled)

You should then do "systemctl status rc-local" to see if you get (code=exited,
status=0/SUCCESS).  It is possible that the environment isn't the same when run
by
hand.  Or, there could be another reason why a script would fail in "unattended"
mode.   I ran into that a few years back where it seemed the script wasn't
running
but in fact was failing for an altogether different reason which I can't recall.

Strange. Try putting echo statements in, with output directed to a file
in /root that will tell you that each command has run or not.

You can check which governor was compiled as default in your kernel by
running grep -i on the config file in /boot for your running kernel.
Because I compile my own kernel, I set that to ondemand as part of the
configuration during the build. One way to solve your problem would be
to compile your own kernel, and set it to what you want.

I've thought about buying one of those little fridges and putting the
system in it. Some advantages:

- keeps the system cool (set the fridge to 70F (20C), or even lower)
- closes off the noise of the system, I think fridges are quieter
- keeps dust out of the system

Would have to cut holes for the cables, and seal them. And it would be
bulkier.

One of these days. Maybe.

Sounds like you have inadequate cooling, and that's going to be a long
term problem that mayn't be avoided by what you're trying to do.

Hot components need a large enough heatsink to dissipate their heat,
and it needs to be firmly attached, with heatsink compound filling the
tiny gap between chip and heatsink.

Heatsinks need to have a fan, or other heat distribution scheme, to
make the heat radiate away sufficiently, and quickly enough.

The case needs to have airflow that brings in fresh air, and expels hot
air (running a case with the cover off can prevent adequate airflow
*across* things, likewise with other obstacles in the case). Even
systems that use liquid cooling still need to move air through the
computer case, because not everything that generates heat will be
directly connected to the cooling system.

There's probably a proper way to do that, but until somebody finds it,
put that into a shell script and call it from rc.local.

So far, the ways I have found on google search have not survived
a reboot :(

cpupower

2018-06-24 Thread JD

Manpage of cpu power make no mention of the
selection of governor.
How can set the governor to be the user mode governor
instead of the performance governor and not the ondemand governor?

If I can permanently set that governor, next I want to
set the cpu frequency (for all cores) to 2134000Hz permanently.

Reason I am posting this is because the normal speed of the cores
is 2.8GHz, and that is causing numerous kerneloops interrupts (overheating).
Fans are at full speed all the time, as I can hear them :) :)

When I set the speed manually (as root) like this:
for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8; do
echo2134000 > cpu$i/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
done

then kerneloops are greatly reduced.
Every kerneloops is accompanied by mce:
So, it has to be the heat.

But I do not want to do this loop every time I boot up.
I want to have set once and for all!!!

Thanx!!!

Done, with thanks!

I also did the same with my #2, the one I thought yesterday had
decided to straighten up and fly right. But there the commenting out
didn't help. That PC is still console only.

It did work. I swear it did. But now it just keeps giving me a
login screen, letting me type, and (after Enter) going back to the login
screen.

Somebody got another favorite to replace lxdm??

Gotta have both halves. "ssh-keygen" will give you new keys.

No need to generate a new keypair. ssh-keygen -y "will read
a private OpenSSH format file and print an OpenSSH public
key to stdout."

Bingo, I had my public key only stored as authorized_keys, I made a copy
of it as id_rsa.pub and now the keyring is working as I remember.

I now have in my ~/.ssh directory

authorized_keys
id_rsa
id_rsa.pub  (copy of authorized keys)
known_hosts

Thanks, Jeff
