You're asking the wrong people that question. But I interpret their
statement as *that* release cannot be installed as an update (it can't
import prior settings/data), but that in the future improved version
will have the ability to be installed as an update (they'll build in an
import feature), so hold off until you see that announcement.

I was doing it before the live system options were common, so it was
just boot up an install disk and let the installer run, being sure
to use the right destination device. I don't know why a live usb
would fail to install on a USB stick, as long as it isn't the same
one you've already booted. Also, last I noticed, there were installation
media other than the live ones.

By "normal install procedure" I assume you mean you were able to
boot some installation media. Since the OP can't boot the live media,
the "normal install procedure" isn't available.

It may be possible to create a new ISO image with extra grub options
like https://www.askapache.com/linux/linux-debugging/

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/creating-and-using-a-live-installation-image/
mentions adding persistent storage to a live USB which might be helpful for
saving logs, etc.

https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c00042629 suggests that you can
create a BIOS update USB drive
from a BIOS update .exe file using a different PC running Windows. Some
.exe files run in freeDOS and generate a .bin file. Some HP laptops have
"BIOS update from file" in the System Diagnostics (maybe press F2 while
booting) with the .bin file on a FAT format USB key.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/539120/how-to-perform-a-hp-bios-upgrade-with-only-ubuntu

And, FWIW, I would not be updating to TB 78 until there is a clear update patch
since they note...

Add-on support: As of version 78.0, Thunderbird only supports MailExtensions.
Your favorite add-ons may not have been updated for compatibility.

and

OpenPGP functionality for Thunderbird 78 is still work in progress, and is
disabled by default in the initial 78.0 release. See the wiki for how to enable
and help with testing.

I would not be happy with that.  Well, unless I plan to be a tester.

Where did you obtain VirtualBox?

Does the version you installed match the Extension Pack?

rpmFusion supplies 6.10 so you'd need
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-6.1.10.vbox-extpack

Sorry for the late reply.

Does anyone here use an HP laptop ?

Specifically this model:
https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04919819#AbT1

I have a very weird problem it seems. In my BIOS startup screen there seems
to be no option like "Update BIOS".

The particular model I am using HP only publishes exe files that can be
used from within Windows via which the BIOS update can happen within the OS.

They do not care about Linux. Hence my only option was to do the BIOS
update from outside the OS. Now I can't find the option to update the BIOS
from a USB.

I have contacted HP via their Community forum but I doubt that I will get a
response.

In the meantime if anyone knows anything about this problem let me know, or
what the best place would be to ask about this issue.

Thanks.

My understanding of that quote is that older versions of TB cannot be
upgraded to version 78.0, but rather that it has to be freshly
installed. I don't use TB but assume that this refers to the in-program
update process (Firefox has a similar procedure), which Fedora users
won't generally be using anyway. I assume Fedora will continue to
support TB via the package manager as usual.

I have a habit of using gpasswd, instead:

  gpasswd -a pdupre vboxusers

because it's easy to forget the -a to usermod. (Or, less likely now, but it
used to be that some versions of usermod didn't have that option and
silently ignored it, which is a recipe for later confusion!)

In any case, remember you have to log out and back in again for this to take
effect.

FWIW, some years back I did (more than once) install Fedora onto
a USB stick using an normal install procedure. all I had to do was
be sure to specify the right device for the USB stick so I didn't
wipe out the installed system on the computer.

This was probably back around Fedoraaa 11-13 or thereabouts, and
I h aven't kept up with Fedora for the last few years, but there is
no reason THAT I KNOW OF why it wouldn't still work.

Good luck!

A LiveCD is basically a Fedora install with some stuff automatically
starting once its booted, and potentially a different bootloader.
It's not clear from what you've mentioned whether a standard Fedora
install on a USB disk would help.

Just booting from the LiveCD with additional kernel parameters would
probably be sufficient to test your system. Can you not interact with
the bootloader of the LiveCD? You could potentially edit the livecd
image and change the default kernel parameters.

Create bootable disk with fedora - but not using live-CD

2020-07-20 Thread Barry Scott
I want to create a bootable USB stick that runs fedora.

I do not want to create a Live-CD USB stick because live-CD
fails to boot on my main PC. And no one seems to know how to
fix this. By using a read-write USB stick I can add in debug
code to the boot process and try to findout what is hanging
the boot process.

What my google-fu is failed to do is figure out how to find
instruction on how to do this with getting live-CD instructions.

I'm guessing that I should be able to use anaconda or dnf to get
the heavy lifting done.

Does anyone know what the steps I need to follow are?

bizzare dual-monitor behavior

2020-07-20 Thread Greg Woods
Let me start by saying I have used this same setup literally for years now
and have not seen this new issue until yesterday.

I have a dual monitor setup. One of the monitors is controlled by a KVM
switch; the machines that have only a single graphics port use this monitor
via the KVM switch. The other monitor has two HDMI ports that are connected
to two computers directly, bypassing the KVM switch; I just switch the
second monitor manually between the two as needed.

What used to happen when I switched to a different computer is that I can
use the new computer using the first monitor, the mouse and the keyboard,
just as usual. The second monitor, unaffected by the KVM switch, will
continue to show the image it is getting from the dual-monitor system. I am
used to this; sometimes I even use it to my advantage when the monitor is
showing a web page or something that I can still see while working on a
different computer.

But, what is now happening (since yesterday) is that when I switch to a
second computer, the non-KVM-switched monitor now flashes off and on every
few seconds (and just keeps doing this seemingly forever; I did leave it
this way for more than 15 minutes last night) . This is INCREDIBLY annoying
and makes it impossible to make any use of the image displayed there.

Another oddity is that this is NOT happening with the other dual-monitor
machine. That system is a Dell laptop in a dock. The system with the issue
is a fairly new desktop (which did not exhibit the issue for the first few
days of use, it suddenly started yesterday). Both systems are running
Fedora 32 (but of course they have very different hardware).

I normally use GNOME on Xorg, but I have tried plain GNOME (Wayland) and
Cinnamon too and the problem exists there as well. I briefly tried Plasma,
but that results in a solid green screen, and when I switch back to the
two-monitor system, the first monitor is solid green too and none of the
keys respond, so I had to use a remote ssh shutdown to recover.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this and know what I could do to stop it?

Thanks,

No worries, I figured as much, but figured that'd be an amusing response.

As for the Thunderbird package, it's probably going to remain, but there's no
telling how it'll handle the upgrade path. I'll look into the package for you
later, to see if it's already in the spec, if nobody does so while I'm at
work.

Any application that makes extensive use of dynamically loaded libraries can
potentially run into trouble if it loads a recently upgraded library while
still using
older versions of other libraries. The problems may not always be highly
visible (e.g., silent corruption of a database) and if visible are likely
to be
interpreted as a "buggy" update and can generate nuisance bug reports
and cause users to avoid updating.

This method is the most robust way to ensure there are no problems
associated with updating. It not only minimizes the chance of users
having problems with updates, it also reduces the workloads for the
people who deal with bug reports.

Agreed. That's also my preferred method, using the DNF tracer plugin so
it's called automatically:

python3-dnf-plugin-tracer

It will tell you what programs you need to restart, or if you need to
log out and in again. It will also tell you when you should reboot. It
occasionally has a false positive, i.e. telling you to reboot when it
doesn't seem to be necessary, but that's a minor issue.

If you reboot after the dnf upgrade then the results are the same.
Until then you will still be using old versions of libraries and old
version of applications until you restart them. You can only use a new
kernel by rebooting. Some applications like Firefox can get unhappy if
you upgrade while they're running and can crash or have strange behaviour.

When you use Gnome Software to do the upgrade, the reboot is not after
the upgrade, the reboot is required to *do* the upgrade. Only the
downloading of packages is done, then when you reboot, it will do the
upgrade, then reboot again into the updated system.
