Fedora was installed alongside Windows and dual boot is working flawlessly. However, the Fedora installer did not show me how it was going to partition the disk under the automatic partitioning scheme. All I can do is select the disk and Automatic, there is no way for me to see how the disk is going to be partitioned before installing. install F36 KDE alongside Win 10
hello everyone, I have done this before, but now I have one big doubt when completing installation of F36 alongside Win 10. I shrunk one of the Win partitions to create good space for my Fedora installation. I have booted the Live installer and entered the Installation destination section (screenshot here: https://user.fm/files/v2-f5626c9be22f21a346c100750161ab0e/nh7b5m4y3fv6uixreqdx.png). If I select Automatic, will Fedora be automatically installed in the biggest unallocated space? and this space partitioned as per Fedora default? I have seen instructions where people select Custom, and manually create partitions, I am way too nervous about partitioning the disk myself. I don't want to mess up the Win installation that has taken me time to setup. fractional scaling in Fedora 36
Hello everyone, I have installed Fedora 36 on a high-dpi laptop (Del XPS 9550) and Gnome; Im having trouble setting the scaling to 250% (200 is too small and 300 is too big). I tried "enabling" fractional scaling by doing: gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']" This in fact allowed me to set the scaling to 250%, but then, when trying to open ANY program, the window would appear and disappear instantly. I wasn't even able to set the setting back to normal. I just reinstalled the whole system to get Gnome working again on Wayland (Xorg was working still). My questions: 1. Is there another way to enable fractional scaling? (Gnome and Wayland) 2. In terms of performance, setting the display resolution to a smaller value (than my monitor default) is the same as using scaling? 3. Does fractional scaling work better in Xorg? how do you enable this in that case? 4. Does fractional scaling on Wayland affect performance compared to integer scaling? 5. Any other suggestions ? NVidia graphics card on F33
hello everyone, I have just installed Fedora 33 workstation on my laptop. I have never had an additional graphics card on a pc and want some guidance as to what I am supposed to do. This is a Dell XPS 9550, which has the integrated Intel HD Graphics 530, and the discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M. When will the laptop be using the NVIDIA card? Is this graphics card now working on my new installation? Regarding installation of drivers: Does Fedora already carry a default driver for this graphics card? Do I need to install a driver? I have noticed there is a specific repository for NVIDIA graphics cards drivers (rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver), which provides the Nouveau driver. Should I install this repository and a specific package contained in it? Does NVIDIA provide another driver for this card in linux? Re: Search engines -
I searched for potato bake recipes without ham, and every recipe it found had ham in it. The words with or without are quite important for getting a search right. I hope they never get involved in AI for futuristic police robots, because saying "don't shoot" is going to get you shot. You might be able to achieve this using the (-) operator. So your search would look something like this: "potato bake recipes -ham". I search for service manuals for equipment, and you can put the exact model number into the search, and only few of the results are even close to your search term. After the first page, I can't see any connection between my search terms and what it returns. You might be able to use quotation marks in this case. Even some of the other boolean operators might help you get what you want. I also dislike google. I am sticking to duckduckgo for now. Sometimes, for specific coding queries I do get a couple of better results from google. I like the fact that duckduckgo allows me to stay in English, instead of constantly wanting to force me towards Spanish or location based websites. Duckduckgo has a nicer look to it, I think its cleaner than google. The aforementioned search operators and functions work both in google and duckduckgo. Re: video in Firefox not streaming
Well, I did verify that even the FF downloaded from mozilla requires ffmpeg in order to play the video when the embedded JW Player is served by the website. I don't believe that this is an issue with required plugins at this point. As a new example, the video in https://www.iceni.com/transpdf.htm (screenshot https://pasteboard.co/JjDtMduG.png), does not load in my Firefox. However, using the developer tools in Firefox, I downloaded the embedded video (.mp4) from the link I saw in the Inspector. I was able to play this downloaded video in the default video player in Fedora with Gnome. So I would appreciate if someone tells me if this means that this is not a codec issue, but maybe some permissions issue or something else thats happening with Firefox, thank you! ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

Re: video in Firefox not streaming
I think this will be a permissions problem. When you say permissions, what permissions do you mean exactly? Like user permissions in my local machine? or like permissions for websites to execute certain types of code? Another thing that can cause this is add-ons. Try creating a new user, and see if that user has problems. /usr/bin/firefox --new-instance --ProfileManager will allow you to create test users with their own pristine profile. Ok. I will try this. But the thing is, this is happening on a default Fedora, Firefox installation. This should be happening to any new user who installs Fedora Workstation 32, as far as I can see. For any real help, you would have to give a sample link or two where this occurs. The issue is occurring with a variety of sites. I do believe it happens when the player is native (I think that means it is the site's player). In these links you can see a couple of examples of sites and errors I am getting. https://pasteboard.co/JjkcW42.png (actually in this url, for example, the included Twitter posts (pictures) are not being shown. ) https://pasteboard.co/Jjkfl0W.png So I suspect it is some kind of security issue with playing or even displaying media content on websites. Considering this is a Java app, it basically requires its own customized JRE. And installing and running it (using the author's package) is as easy as unpacking an archive. 2. As a follow up to the first question. What makes this particular repository special in being included in this list? I am complaining because I installed the app using this repository and it was crashing, requiring a hard reboot. Running or "installing" this app using the directly downloaded package works better.
