Hi, Patrick. Tried that, resulting:

It's hard to be sure whether anything is not working correctly. I am

Hardware errors

2018-02-17 Thread Anne Wilson
Hi. After a long time away from Linux I'll be asking some newby-type
questions, so I'll apologise from the start.

I have just installed the KDE Spin of FC27 to a four-year-old Lenovo
G510 laptop, with a 120GB drive installed. Dring bootup I'm seeing
messages about hardware failures. They don't linger long enough to
write them down, and boot.log appears to be empty (unless that's because
I'm logged in as user, not root). They mention

TSC_Deadline
mce
dracut-pre-udev

How desperate is this? Is it really telling me it's time to ditch that
laptop?

I've never met this "hold Fn key on any of the other machines I've had.

Join the list - yes, that was always my intention. I dislike web interfaces,
much preferring email. Obviously I made a bad selection somewhere when all
this started, and once started I hesitated to try to change the method
mid-stream.

2018-02-16 Thread Anne Wilson
GOT IT! - In case someone else reads this thread, this is what you need to know.

If your function keys are marked in orange or blue, you need to hold down the
Fn key. From the Power menu, select Restart and, with the Fn key firmly down,
start tapping F2. (Function keys marked in white shouldn't need this.)

I've now got the Live DVD running. If all looks well I'll install the KDE spin.

Thanks for all the effort you all put in trying to help me.

You're right - It's a Lenovo G510. It was sold as a 64-bit machine, but ISTR
that I always had more success with 32-bit software. Maybe that's what's
causing some of my problem.

I can't get to grips with the interface I'm seeing. There seems to be a huge
amount of software that I can't find, including dmidecode. Searching returns
"no results".

I have also seen signs about vmlinuz - which are incomplete when I see them,
and I haven't found them since. Kernel-core is reporting hardware problems
(possibly missing 3rd party drivers?). Altogether I'm more and more convinced
that I have to somehow completely get rid of this install. I believe this
being 64-bit is at least part of the problem.

Re: To replace fc27 Gnome with KDE spin?

2018-02-16 Thread Anne Wilson
I have tried Esc, Fn 1-12 and Del. In each case I have selected a reboot, then
hit the selected key, holding it down throughout the reboot process. None of
them gave me the required screen - all with just the choice between the
existing FC and Rescue.

I'm beginning to think that I will have to take out the hard drive, mount it in
a caddy, then hope that Windows disk management tools will see it and allow me
to remove everything. Hopefully at that point I'll be able to reinstall and
boot from DVD. Whether I'll be able to set UEFI off permanently is anybody's
guess.

Some small progress - I managed to get, from the previously described Fedora

Of course if my previous change was not permanent, it would not be Fedora

Samual and Steve, When I installed Fedora I got the screen where you can turn
UEFI off. Since I wanted to promote the DVD drive over hard disk boot, I
turned it off. I thought that was permanent. However, now I can no longer get
to that screen. I have managed several time to interupt the boot, but I only
have the choice of the existing Fedora or Rescue. Something, which has to be
Fedora related, since it worked before, is stopping me booting from the DVD.

To replace fc27 Gnome with KDE spin?

2018-02-14 Thread Anne Wilson
I mistakenly installed the Gnome Desktop from a live DVD - my SSD is small,
and I want KDE, so I have burned a disk with the Spin. Problem now, though, is
that Fedora appears to have turned UEFI back on, and I can't find any way of
getting back to promoting the DVD drive. Interrupting the boot simply offers
me the choice of the existing Workstation or Rescue. How can I access the spin
install?

Quite simple - the driver is not a legally free driver, so can't be included
in the purer distros. However, rpmfusion does supply drivers for the grey
area, where they are legally free in some countries but not in others. Make
sure you have the rpmfusion free and non-free repos installed.

You were googling the wrong thing. You should have been looking for BCM4322.
Here is the link you need -
http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=233919 - it's for Fedora 12,
but exactly the same is needed for Fedora 14 (I know, I had to install it on

It should be possible to install the driver to the USB stick, I would think.

Careful - there are two different sets - the b43 driver and fwcutter and the
broadcom-wl driver, which also has a matching fwcutter, IIRC. Try to identify
which driver you need. If you can't you may have to try each in turn.

From the Fail2ban main page:

Fail2ban scans log files like /var/log/pwdfail or /var/log/apache/error_log
and bans IP that makes too many password failures. It updates firewall rules
to reject the IP address.

Brute force attacks are stopped in their tracks. You configure how many
consecutive failures are allowed before blocking occurs. We all occasionally
mis-type a password or use the wrong password, but normally we only do that
once, so three or four consecutive failures are very suspect.

My comment was not aimed at you or your post, but at a general tone that seems
to be too prevalent these days. It is right and proper to correct people that
don't understand netiquette, but IMO it should be done in private.

I'm sorry that it appeared to be personal, but that's one problem with
threading - you have to attach to something, and it tends to be the last
message in the thread that catches it when such a general comment is made.
Since your story was not part of the practice I'm complaining about I
apologise to you.

Why is it that some people on this list think it clever to publicly humiliate?
Gentle reminders off-list are so much more effective.

That was the solution. For others with this need, go to
http://fedoraunity.org/mobile/fc-wireless/broadcom-linux-sta-driver for
instructions. I used the akmod method, incredibly smooth.

Actually, no, because another webpage said it needed the b43 driver. I plan
to try that version today. The problem, as is so often so, is that
information from various sources, all apparently reputable, give different
information.

This is the same device as on my netbook. I have been told that it will not
work with the b43 driver. I have been promised some help this morning on IRC,
and I'll report back if I get it to work.

I had similar problems in mounting from fstab. It turned out that I was using
mount commands suited to nfs3 and Fedora was using nfs4. This is one of the
fstab lines that works for me - I'm sure that from that you can find what you
need.

192.168.0.xx:/home /mnt/server_home nfs4 rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr

Ed, can I ask for practical details? Currently my router gives wifi coverage
on the ground floor and first floor (and is little used, but desirable). By
the time the signal reaches my office in a stone building in the garden it is
very weak. I tried adding a second router with the wan omitted and hit the
problem described in this thread. I have removed that and now have a switch
box without wifi in the office, but now my Internet tablet can't connect so I
need wifi here again.

Does the AP you recommend simply attach to the switch box? Are there good
instructions somewhere that deal with any special settings? Any practical
advice you can add?

Thanks

Kontact is a wrapper for all the kde-pim modules, kmail, kaddressbook,
korganizer and so on. They all can be run separately, so it's quite possible
you are only running korganizer.

I meant that in a terminal you should issue the command "killall kontact", but
if you are using korganizer as a standalone application, instead issues
"killall korganizer" and see if that does it.

So much depends upon which version of everything is running. Let's start with
knowing which version of Fedora and which version of KOrganizer you are
running.

Then, try starting korganizer from a terminal and see what happens. You may
see a huge amount of information scrolling by. Let it finish, the copy it and
paste into a text file. Paste the text file into http://fpaste.org/ and then
add the link it gives you to this thread. There's a better chance then of
seeing what is actually happening.

I've not had this problem in korganizer, but I have seen it with other kontact
modules. I find that the best thing is to killall kontact and wait a few
seconds, after which everything works again. I assume that something that
should have shut down is still open, and this seems to find it.

Alternatively, it usually works if you open system monitor (Ctrl-Esc) and put
korganizer into the search bar. You'll probably find a slave hanging around,
and if you can kill it there that should clear things.

I didn't - I thought I had gone through all the Preferences settings, but I
missed that. Thanks for that.

And thanks for the cc - I didn't get the list one, or any other list posts :-)
