F18/F19 VPN issues with NetworkManager
Hello! I was using Fedora 17 x86_64 with NetworkManager vpnc and reinstalled Fedora 19. NM + vpnc does not seem to work anymore and here are the logs from syslog "Jul 3 21:11:44 localhost NetworkManager[423]: Starting VPN service 'vpnc'... Jul 3 21:11:44 localhost NetworkManager[423]: VPN service 'vpnc' started (org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc), PID 2643 Jul 3 21:11:44 localhost NetworkManager[423]: VPN service 'vpnc' appeared; activating connections Jul 3 21:11:51 localhost NetworkManager[423]: VPN plugin state changed: starting (3) Jul 3 21:11:51 localhost NetworkManager[423]: VPN connection 'InMobi' (Connect) reply received. I see the same behavior with F18 as well. I could share the vpnc debug report if it helps diagnose and also open a bug as needed. Is there anything else I'm missing? Evolution: Google Calendars Won't Sync
Fedora=18, Evolution=3.6.3 I filed a bug report about a week ago with no reply. Presumably they are working on the the 3.8 release later in the month. Strangely, I had a crash unrelated to Evo and had to force a power off. When I restarted and logged back on, EVO asked for the US Holidays password. That calendar is now working but not the personal calendar. Is there some trick to get these things to sync? GIMP has always had a wonderful multi-window interface and I have been using it since - probably - pre-Fedora. Over the last few releases they have markedly changed the interface and methodology without any improvement. The tool-box window has now been shrunk and no longer displays all of the information that it used to. I have yet to figure out how to do things that I used to do - easily - for years. I also don't like the fact that it now defaults to xcf. Perhaps someone else can explain this change better than I can. In simple terms, if I open a jpg, edit and then do a ctl-s, it no longer brings up the jpg dialog. The text dialog is completely different and almost impossible because the new pop-up obscures the text area. The fill tool no longer fills an area of a photo properly (it fills contiguous shapes). F17 KDE Breakage
I seem to be having a problem with any KDE application that has to communicate with the world. 1. KMyMoney refuses to update from my bank's server via OFX direct. GnuCash shares the same AQbanking setup and works perfectly. That doesn't help me convert two years of data. 2. Akregator refuses to fetch any feeds. It won't even fetch feed icons. I exported to OPML and imported the feeds into liferea which works perfectly. Liferea seems lighter and more nimble anyway. 3. The YAWP weather widget is dead. It won't fetch data nor will it add any locales using any of the available services like NOAA, Google or Accuweather. I tried the other weather widget - same result. I filed a bug report on KMyMoney which is of critical importance. I wonder if I should try a clean install. Is this stuff working for anyone in F17? Right now I am profoundly sorry that I upgraded to from F16. -- -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? The correct driver is: xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.19.0-1.fc17.x86_64. Once I removed the old driver with "--nodeps," installed the new driver and rebooted, everything worked as expected. I must be missing something. Running pulseaudio as a daemon SEEMS to be much less troublesome. It's easy enough to change in the conf file. Audio device=Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series. Incorrect charge indications
This first appeared in Kernel 3.3.0-4.fc16.x86_64 and persists through 3.3.0-8.fc16.x86_64. I have a vanilla Intel i5 based laptop with one battery. Power data used to come from /proc/acpi/battery but I don't have that file. The KDE applet displays, on hover, that the adaptor is plugged in, Battery 0 is 100% charged; Battery 1 is 33% charged and discharging. While plugged in, this is trivial. However, unplugged and it changes the overall charge percentages for power management. I cannot file a bug report until I know if this is a KDE or kernel issue. I cannot know that without identifying the /proc file that displays battery status. Another Pulseaudio Adventure
I made the "mistake," last night, of powering off with the sound muted. For reasons that I will NEVER understand PA decides to select the next sound device if the first one is muted. That would be the HDMI output (from the same sound card). The analog output is then not an option under hardware settings. Usually, I can straighten this out with a pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio -D. Now, however, these commands reset the audio back to the remembered state (muted) and, although the analog output device is now available, it refuses to produce any sound. PA is profoundly confused by muting. To add insult to injury, just examining the hardware requires the additional "apply" click when nothing has changed; it's just one further nuisance. A reboot sends the sound back to muted no matter how I set the mixer before rebooting. This is all EXTREMELY f*cking frustrating. WHEN will developers finally accept the FACT that PA has been a problem since it was first introduced? For years I could harmlessly remove the damned thing but that is no longer really an option. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? Messy PulseAudio Solution
In Pulse v. Me, this is just some trial and error. YMMV The symptom is not being able to select the correct audio output device. What seems to work is, from root, pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio -D Pulse will kvetch about running from root (I DID say that it is messy). Gnome-control-center: The proper card is selected. KDE system settings: The device list is replaced with "Pulseaudio Sound Server" while all of the options are available in "Audio Hardware Setup" Given that I have a rather recent laptop (i5 w/Intel sound) I suspect that this is a pervasive problem. "Messy" beats pulling hair. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? Yum requires "clean all" to work
I don't see any other posts like this so it is reasonable to assume that this is not a bug. For over a week now, "yum update" doesn't see any updates unless I do a "yum clean all" first. I was tempted to start deleting stuff in /var/lib/yum. My saner side stopped that misadventure. Yum check is clean. Pulse Audio Continues to be a Menace
The following happens quite frequently: A few days ago, I plugged into HDMI. When I was done I manually returned the "audio hardware setup" to the analog output (once upon a time it did this automagically). A couple of boots since then - all is fine. Today, I have no sound. The ONLY choices I have in the hardware settings are HDMI or "dummy." If I reboot it might offer the proper options. I can also force the issue by removing the scan in /etc/default.pa but then there is no default device which creates other problems. Back in the day, I routinely removed Pulse but these days that seems impossible due to dependencies. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? Update regarding HDMI frustration
A post for posterity. The essence of this issue was that, using KDE, the highest resolution that was offered for my HDTV, connected to my laptop via HDMI, was 1024x768. A number of people made a number of suggestions. Turns out that the problem rested in a check box toggle for unified displays. Unchecking the box provides the ability set an HDTV at 1920x1080. Having said that, the expectation is that one could have the laptop at 1366x768 while the TEEVee is set to 1920x1080. That is just not the case. Apparently that, as well as WiDi are still Windows only. Nevertheless, with slight gamma and position adjustment, I was able to enjoy some HD media as intended. Oh, someone recommended using xrandr to manipulate the display devices. That might be a good idea. However, the man page is about as arcane as The Egyptian Book of the Dead. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? HDMI Frustration
The first time that I plugged my laptop into my HD TV, KDE (I guess it was KDE) provided a pop-up to configure the second monitor. It correctly identified it at 1920 x 1080. For some reason, my primary monitor also adapted to the TV setting and great portions of my desktop were off the margins. I could not get the sound to work. Last night I tried again. The good news is that I got HDMI digital sound to work. However, I could only configure the TV to 1024 x 768. Upon doing so my laptop screen adapted and my desktop was all scrunched together. This brings up two questions: 1. Why do the setting of a second monitor affect the settings of my primary monitor and; 2. What is preventing me from setting my second monitor to its native resolution of 1920x1080 (something that I successfully did in the past)? Any help would be appreciated. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? 64 bit issue with wine/F16
I filed a bug report so I am just bringing this to the attention of users. Turns out that wine installs duplicated 32 bit and 64 bit packages. With dependencies, it works out to an additional 96 32-bit packages and about an additional quarter gig of space. For example wine-64 requires wine-core-64 AND wine-core-32. The vast majority of the 32 bit packages that are required have nothing to do with wine; they are dependencies of dependencies and so on. The space is a nominal issue. At the risk of being overly anal, I just don't like the ambiguous libraries. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? Clean Installs are Remarkable
I cannot believe that we are at F16. I clearly recall RH9 to FC-1. But I digress. I know that others have said this in the past. I just thought that I would reinforce the notion that clean installs remove a large number of annoying problems that persist through upgrades. Moreover, it is refreshing to start with a clean desktop; something that has become a palette for the way we think and do things. It has been awhile and I was unaware of the many advances that developers have made in installation. It has never been this easy, intuitive and fast. I was in a Walgreens the other day and picked up a bunch of Sony DVD's for 40 cents each. There was a time when burning a DVD through Linux was a considerable challenge. Now it is routine --- and cheap. The perfect excuse for backing up the accumulated bytes; It makes you think what you really want to retain. Then wiping the HD clean. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? WiDi anyone?
It is strange working on a machine with only a half of a screen. Anyway, that will be resolved on Tuesday. But I digress. Has anyone heard of a WiDi for Linux project? Maybe a wrapper? For those unaware, this is Intel's wireless display streaming protocal. With Win7 and a $50.00 adaptor connected by HDMI to your HD TV, you can stream your display wirelessly at 1080p from laptop to boob tube. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? SystemD Resolved
After all my kvetching, it turns out that systemd is really pretty easy to administer. SOME techs have a tendency to write documentation that is rather esoteric. I think that I likened the 49 man pages for systemd to Talmudic study. This could use a graphical application to create the necessary links. I was lost because of being accustomed to SysV for more than a decade. My concern is that a new user migrating from windows would be equally lost. This could also use a SIMPLE guide for end users who would ordinarily manage just the multi-user and graphical target.wants. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

It's easier to eliminate it all and just script everything in rc.local. The increasing and pointless esoterica is making it impossible for people to migrate to Fedora and that is very unfortunate.
