So how is F15 (KDE) ?
How is F15-KDE, overall ? I'm still running F14, due to problems rebooting during the pre-upgrade process. Is it worth my time to troubleshoot and fix this issue or should I just keep running F14 ? Novel Moonlight on Firefox 4.0 ???
I need to view a website that requires Microsoft's Silverlight to access. I have installed Novell's Moonlight 3.99.03 on Firefox 4.0.1. Re: Install Fedora on an android tablet or an iPad?

I have an iPad and I run into things I wish I could do with it every day. Linux on my tablet would rock! I just bought a Dell Inspiron Duo. Firstly, I'd say its an iPad killer. Its has USB ports. It has enough power to run youtube videos. It does Flash, for better or worse. It has a 320GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. It has Bluetooth, ie it can be tethered to a phone. It has enough power to run real applications. And on and on. Probably the biggest downfalls are that it doesn't have a camera and its a bit heavier than an iPad, but it also has a real (usable) keyboard built right in and when you close it up the screen is totally protected. As far as Linux goes, I haven't run it (yet) on my Duo, but there are videos on youtube of it running Ubuntu Unity in a pretty snappy fashion. If you (or others) want to run Linux on a Tablet, I'd say its a very good place to start. I'll let everyone know when I get around to installing it. The other thing to be aware of is that the KDE team is working on something called Plasma-Active. I recommend Googling it. I looked into installing Linux on an iPad and was deterred by a number of issues. The best thing about the Duo is that its totally open and free of all encumbrances. You don't need to jail break it and the chances of bricking it or running afoul of something the manufacturer engineered in are just about zero. As far as I am concerned, for my usage, a Duo is far better than an iPad. Multi platform paperless office (Windows DB access ?)
Last week we got a high speed multifunction machine with an excellent scanner. We proceeded to scan literally hundreds of documents in an effort to go paperless. Now we'd like to provide some sort of systematic access to those documents, from both Windows and Linux machines. What we basically want to do is provide users with a small application that has information on the document (type, owner, subject, vendor, customer, date etc) and allows the user to sort and search according to criteria and then open or mass print them. For example, a user might want to make a list of all the paperless invoices from vendor X between March 1 and March 20th, 2010 and then open them one by one from the application. We need to do this from both Windows and Linux computers. Any and all ideas and hints on how to do this structurally would be greatly appreciated. Specifically, what language and tools does one use to write an application that runs on both Windows and Linux to access a remote database ? I've got 2 ideas myself. The first is a Java based application that connects to a Postgress or MySQL backend. The second is a spreadsheet with a data input form. What other options are there ?? How hard is it to build a Qt application for Windows these days ? This also helps clarify what kinds of things should go upstream. I would bet very strongly against a 2.6.35 kernel for Fedora 14 at this point. Update Re: Paperless office... document management ? (High speed scanner)
I'm going to share my experience in case someone else is contemplating going paperless like we were. The Dell 3335dn (printer, scanner, copier, fax machine/server )arrived last week. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uscs=04l=ensku=224-8405 Disclaimer. I have no affiliation with Dell. I did a quick, dirty and incomplete setup on it and started scanning to a USB mass storage device, ie flash thumb drive. (The 3335 also supports scanning to an ftp server !) The 3335dn is an incredible scanner. The touchscreen UI is very intuitive and flexible. The (duplex!) document feeder works very well. The scans are high quality and fast, though double sided scans are a bit slower due to the speed of how the duplexer turns the page over. In 2 hours I scanned about 100 documents. About 10 pounds of paper considering the envelopes, advertising, inserts, etc. The documents consisted of bulky insurance documents, contracts. bank statements, brochures, invoices, receipts, monthly statements and correspondence. Sizes ranged from the usual legal and letter stuff to various odd sizes. BW and color. Single sided and double sided. Landscape and portrait. The 3335dn handles it all. I've since scanned about 300 documents. Everything has come out great. Here is a great example. I have this paper catalog that I frequently use. The vendor doesn't or won't provide a digital copy. Mine frequently gets lost and other people want to use it. Its about 100 pages, 8.5 x 11, color, double sided. I pulled the staples out of my copy and cut it in half down the binding center. I trimmed up the edges a bit and slipped half of them into the document feeder and pressed Scan It When the first half was done, I scanned the second half. I got 2 really good color pdf files, 50 pages each ! The 3335 isn't perfect. For one thing the document feeder has a single roller wheel in the center. It works fairly well except that if the edges of the pages aren't great (like if you cut apart a catalog), the pages tend to go through a bit crooked. Its no big deal, but it would be great if the feed drive had several rollers instead of just a central one. Having said all this, the 3335 document feeder jammed only once and I was feeding some pretty horrendous paper through it. It also isn't the fastest printer when warm up times are taken into account. But once through the warm up sequence, its great. A really neat thing about the 3335 is that it will print the first copy of a job and then wait for input on whether to Finish the job. At first I found it annoying, but now I find it very useful in that I don't waste paper with an incorrect copy or print job. Back to the issue at hand... thanks to the 3335dn, we have now converted a ton of paper into pdf and jpg files. Its incredible how much that cleaned up my office. While we haven't done much organizing other than sorting them into folders (something that can be done right at the 3335 when scanning them if desired), our office is much tidier and the documents are much, much more accessable. The utility of this simple step alone is huge. Prior to scanning our documents we were contemplating the purchase of an industrial sized filing cabinet and we dreaded searching for specific pieces of paper. Our office is much, much more efficient now and I only see it getting better as we do more with the documents. So far going paperless has been a huge success and we don't regret it for a second. The best thing is the elimination of piles of paper as a means to organize things. One of the things I find myself doing is keeping a Todo list in Writer and with every item I now have a link to the documents that concern it. Very, very handy. That fact alone reduces the barriers to getting things done. Its also very handy to be able to send an email to someone and attach the actual document that is being discussed. Of course this story isn't complete. I'll update our progress as we go along, including how we integrate the documents into other software applications we use. The bad news is that DFP-1 is the HDMI port. So the video card channel that feeds it is only rated for 165MHz output, which isn't enough to drive the U3011 at 2560x1600. Ironically, HP uses 330 MHz of bandwidth to drive the internal display, which is only 1680x1050. BUT WAIT. This laptop will drive 2 displays if I turn off the internal display. Surely the HDMI port would get the 330 MHz dlock then ? Long story short, it doesn't. The dual link port stays assigned to the internal display panel and the HDMI port gets the single link port. Unless one can redirect DFP-0 to the HDMI port, there is no way to fix this problem. Is there a way to reassign the internal video card port to the HDMI port ? The other interesting thing is that HP lists the pixel rate for 1920x1200 as 193.5 MHz in the U3011 manual, which is greater than the supposed 165 MHz clock limit on DFP-1 and it appears to drive it just fine. 2560x1600 display issue due to copyright issues ?
The Dell 3007WFP and Hewlett Packard LP3065 30 LCD monitors require a graphics card with a dual-link DVI port to drive the ultra high native resolution of 2560x1600 which these monitors support. With the current family of NVIDIA Geforce 8 7 series HDCP capable GPU's, playback of HDCP content is limited to single-link DVI connection only. HDCP is disabled over a dual-link DVI connection. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=759929 So it seems as though copyright issues prevent graphics card or laptop manufacturers from enabling the full bandwidth of an HDMI 1.3 port and thus regular users like me from using a U3011 monitor for work purposes. 2560x1600 display issue. (x11?, nvidia 8800 GTS, hdmi, dvi-d, Dell U3011)
I received the Dell U3011 monitor today, which has a native display resolution of 2560x1600. I have an HP HDX9494 with an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS video card in it that I am using to drive it. The user manual for the U3011 is here http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/MONITORS/U3011/en/ug/about.htm The specs for the HDX9494 is here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01490775tmp_task=prodinfoCategorylc=endlc=encc=usos=2100product=3747924sw_lang= Info on the Geforce 8800 GTS is here http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_8800.html http://www.nvidia.com/page/8800_tech_specs.html The problem is that I can't get the laptop to HDX9494 to drive the U3011 at 2560x1600. The U3011 has several inputs, HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI (Dual link) and VGA. According to the manual, the highest preset resolution of the monitor when using the HDMI input is 1920x1600 @ 60 Hz. The highest preset resolution is 2560x1600 for DVI and DisplayPort inputs. The HDX laptop does not have a DVI or DisplayPort output. It does have an HDMI port. According to the GF8800 documentation, it has two dual link DVI ports that support 2560x1600. The HDMI wiki tells me that HDMI 1.3 should support 1560x1600@ 24 bits at 75Hz. HDMI 1.3 was released in 2006 and the HDX was built in 2008. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI When I connect the HDX to the U3011 HDMI port using a High Speed HDMI cable, the maximum resolution I am able to select from the configuration software is 1920 x 1200. When I connect the HDX to the U3011 DVI port using a High Speed HDMI cable and a dual link HDMI to DVI adapter, the maximum resolution I am able to select from the configuration software is 1600 x 1200 I have tried this with both the proprietary nvidia driver and the nouveau driver. I have tried manually editing the xorg.conf file with various modelines to no avail. When I run the nvidia-setting software and look at the properties of the display, it shows a dual link connection for the built in 1680x1050 display and a single link connection for the HDMI device. How do I get my HDX to drive the U3011 at 2560x1600 ? Is this a hardware problem or a software problem ? Does the nouveau driver use the xorg.conf file the way the proprietary driver does, ie does it use modelines ? For whatever reason, my video fan just throttled down. Something to do with the first run ? Are you certain that you're hearing the GPU fan, and not the CPU fan? I'm pretty sure its the GPU fan. I know what the CPU fan is like because I've heard it since I got it. I installed the nouveau driver today and for the first time I heard the GPU fan by itself. Furthermore, not only does it sound different, it comes from a different part of the laptop. When I plug in the numbers from the U3011 user guide, it spits out settings for 2560x1440 instead of 2560x1600. Some time ago I had a slightly similar problem, but I had no idea how to generate the correct modelines, and because I was afraid I would fry the monitor :), I did not experiment. http://www.arachnoid.com/modelines/ give me # 2560x1600 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 99.36 kHz; pclk: 348.16 MHz Modeline 2560x1600_60.00 348.16 2560 2752 3032 3504 1600 1601 1604 1656 -HSync +Vsync which doesn't agree with the number from the table in the U3011 manual VESA, 2560 x 1600 98.71 60.0 268.5 +Hsync / -Vsync I'll try it out as soon as I hear if the nouveau driver is using modeline in xorg.conf or not. Aside. I'm using the KDE display tool in Settings-System-Settings. It doesn't display as much information as nividia-settings, but it does some things (monitor rotation, etc.) better. What is interesting to me is that I get a different horizontal resolution (1600 versus 1920) when I use the DVI adapter. That tells me the video card is trying to do something different. Is the driver supposed to sync up the card to the monitor in the absense of correct modelines ? BTW: I thought the 20 inch display on my HDX was high quality. The U3011 (running 1920x1600 in 1:1 display mode) blows it away. Its almost too sharp and bright. But that can be adjusted. The HDX display looks like trash now. For the answer to this question, look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, and follow the messages of the nouveau driver as it initializes itself and determines modes and resolutions. Its very informative. If it is excluding the resolutions you want, you'll at least know *why* it is doing that. Its really interesting that you said that because it prodded me to look at the output for nouveau and I found its very verbose in this regard. Much better than the nvidia driver. Here is a pertinent snippet. None of the EDID info goes past 1920x1200, which is the maximum resolution that I am attaining. This was run with the monitor connected to the HDMI port, which Dell says has a limit of... 1920x1200. I'll connect to the DVI port and rerun it. And yet one of those you should do it my way posts really helped me. I would have never considered a 30 inch display when I started this process. Someone suggested it in a reply to my original question and, with an open mind, I went looking. Lo and behold, it makes a lot of sense, for a number of reasons. 2 big monitors side by side would look like this. http://img.hexus.net/v2/graphics_cards/ati/avivo_early_look/images/dual-cinema-big.jpg In my opinion, that doesn't work well. One of them needs to the primary display and the other needs to be angled off to the side. With big monitors, (27+ inches) I think that is clumsy. 3 of them are even worse. http://macdailynews.files.wordpress.com/2007/05/070520_algore.jpg The only way I could see making use of that screen area is with a roller chair moving side to side. This is what made sense to me. http://www.blakespot.com/images/blake_hp_apple_1024.jpg Its still a dual monitor setup and it has the advantages of a huge primary monitor. I don't have anything against Evolution. I've been using it for almost 10 years. However, it seems a bit stale and jaded. How is Claws compared to Evolution ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claws_Mail http://www.claws-mail.org/ What is the Perl filtering and Python scripting about ? Re: OT: one huge monitor or 2 smaller or bigger ones ? SOLVED.
I figured out what I am going to do. I like the idea of having a huge monitor, ie the U2711 or the U3011 because of their pixel area. 2560 x 1440 and 2560 x 1600 respectively ON ONE SCREEN. I do a lot of photo editing and a screen that size would allow me to view images in a large way and still have room for editing tools around them. I find the 1680x1050 area on my 20 inch monitors limiting in this respect. However, I don't want to lose the handiness of dual monitor functionality. Its really nice that in KDE each monitor acts as its own desktop. I always have things running in my second monitor and its extremely handy to have something open in a side monitor while working on something in the main monitor, especially when cutting and pasting between applications. However, the U2711 and the U3011 are too large to have 2 such monitors side by side. The 2711 is about 25 inches wide and the 3011 is 27.5 inches wide. My desk isn't wide enough to have 2 such monitors, especially when I like one monitor to be directly in front of me and the other monitor to be to the left, angled inward. So... what I decided is to use one huge monitor for my main display and a second, smaller monitor beside it, operating in a portrait orientation. The U3011 is 2560x1600. I already have a 20 Dell that is 1680x1050 and nearly as wide as the U3011 is high. If I rotate the 20 inch monitor to portrait orientation, I get 1050 x 1680, the length of which nicely matches the U3011's height ( ie 1680 pixels high versus 1600 pixels high) and the pixel pitch is pretty similar as well. The other nice issue about having the side monitor in portrait mode is that the applications I run on the side (text editors, email clients and word processors) make better use of portrait orientation than they do landscape orientation. Thus the two monitors combined will give me 3610 x ~ 1600 pixels. The Linux code to do this is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=976120 I'll put my order in for the U3011 tomorrow. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

However, I can see where this is a special case, especially if you need to have two photos visible at the same time for comparison or copy/paste work. I actually think that would be handled OK on one 2560 x 1600 monitor. For me the biggest downfall of what I have now is that images viewed in portrait mode in Digikam are pretty small. Part of that problem is that my 20 monitors are only 1050 pixels high. Take off 400 pixels for for upper and lower stuff bordering the image and you are left with 600 pixels or about 5 inches high on my displays and only a few inches wide. (Maybe 6x4...) The image size will just about double on a 30 2560 x 1600 monitor. Not so much on the 2560 x 1440, but it will be better. It seems to me, however, that the most cost effective way to get what you need is to buy a bigger desk that will accommodate two of the U2711 or U3011 units side by side. My desk is wide enough to fit both, but I'll need to view one monitor directly in front of me and have another to the side. That puts my chair well off to one side and that is where the issues start. I was also thinking 2 U2711s would be overkill. Not sure why... just strikes me as being excessive. But I thought that too when I set up 2 20 monitors... h... Of course, you may not have room for a bigger desk, but IMO it's worth considering. Very interesting. I guess I need to give this more thought. Have you tried using a dual monitor setup. I find it indispensable. Right now I am typing an email in my left display while watching a download in the right one. Its not the same as having both windows in one display, its better. For one thing, you never have to worry about a window in one display covering up a window in the other display, even if the other app does funny things with the focus. However, I can see where this is a special case, especially if you need to have two photos visible at the same time for comparison or copy/paste work. Copy and paste could be useful, but comparison of two pictures on two displays has this problem: If the displays are not producing an identical response, and they won't be, you may produce errors in your picture when your using one monitor and tweaking it against the picture on the other. I fully agree with this. Comparing tweaked photos, especially for things like white balance, has to be done on the same monitor. And its really handy if they are immediately side by side or if the same areas can be blown up and moved simultaneously. Digikam has a great tool for doing this. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines
Paperless office... document management ? (High speed scanner)
So... our home office is growing and we are getting swamped by paper. Invoices, receipts, billing records, printed correspondence, etc. We are thinking of buying a high speed multi purpose printer/scanner/copier/fax machine, specifically the Dell 3335DN. One of its selling features is the ability to scan a stack of paper (via its paper feeder) into jpeg or pdf format at speeds up to 25 pages per minute. While scanning most of the paper in our office will eliminate the physical paper, how do we manage the documents once they are on a computer ? At the very least we need a way to search the generated documents by one or more keywords. Thus far, the best solution I have come up with is to put together a small database program using Open Office, like this: http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/tutorials/openoffice-org-base-no-frills-document-management/ However, it would be really nice to take it a step further and tie a ToDo list and scheduler into the system and maybe even an accounting system. Ie, we scan a receipt into the system and then enter the accounting transaction for the receipt and tie the two together. Or create a ToDo item with a link to the image of the document that needs to be handled. Has anyone done anything like this ? How should we proceed ? -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines
OT: one huge monitor or 2 smaller or bigger ones ?
I run F14 KDE for a variety of tasks including writing documents, managing email, browsing, purchasing, research, some software development, simple administration, etc. I'm not a gamer. I presently have 2 20 monitors on my desktop, each at 1680x1050, for a total area of 3360x1050. My computer has a GeForce 8800M GTS video processor. For the most part it works fairly well, especially in KDE, with the way it allows each monitor to be its own work space. It has come to my attention that we have a surplus in our technology fund. If you were in my position, which monitor configuration would you select ? a) Stay with the 2 monitors I have. (2x 20 inch, 3360x1050 total area, cost, $0) b) Upgrade to 2 24 inch 1920x1200 monitors, like the Dell U2410 or similar. (3840x1200, cost about $850) c) Upgrade to 1 27 inch monitor, like the Dell U2711. (2560x1440, cost about $850) d) Upgrade to 2 27 inch monitors, like the Dell U2711. (5120x1140, cost about $1700) e) Upgrade to 1 30 inch monitor, like the Dell U3011. 1560x1600, cost $1300) How does one find out the pixel limit of a video card ? There’s some good news regarding Unity, though; the change to glew that I was waiting for arrived upstream, and ajax kindly let me patch it into the Fedora package, so once that update goes to stable, that roadblock is gone, and I can build nux, the last underpinning for the Unity stuff that I was waiting to get into place. Then I think I can actually build the Unity compiz plugin (which is all Unity really is, ultimately) and see if it flies. So that may actually go somewhere. Still no promises, though! Getting a USB driver added for a device ? (Hitec HPP-22, wine, USB, RC)
I use the Hitec Aurora 9 (A9) transmitter for my remote control vehicles. http://www.hitecrcd.com/products/aircraft-radios-receivers-and-accesories/aircraft/aurora9/aurora-9-2-4ghz.html This transmitter is part of a system of devices. One of the devices in this system is the HPP-22, which is a USB device that allows a computer to communicate with the A9 in order to load and save model information as well as update the firmware in the transmitter and receivers. http://www.hitecrcd.com/products/aircraft-radios-receivers-and-accesories/telemetry/hpp-22.html Hitec publishes closed source Windows based software to enable a Windows computer to communicate with the HPP-22. http://hitecrcd.co.kr/tester/hpp_22.htm After renaming the install file from Install_hpp_22_V1.04(1).exe to Install_hpp_22_V1.04.exe in Dolphin, wine runs the installer just fine, albeit with a few warning messages. Note: Bash doesn't allow () characters. Doing a right click on the file name in Dolphin allowed me to change it. In hindsight this could have been corrected when downloading the install fall. When I run the resulting HPP-22 program, it displays HPP-22 is disconnected. I need to get some coffee and hopefully my brain will get in gear I believe that was ECN. (A way to signal congestion without throwing away packects.) There have also been problems with MTU discovery because people block ICMP packets indiscrimiantly. That is starting to stir the synapse The problem is related to what is in the syn, ack packet coming from 12.17.249.39. In the TCP Options it is sending Window scale: 0 (multiply by 1). I think this is causing problems since later packets have the TCP data segment being only 92 bytes from 12.17.249.39. While the same info is in the syn, ack the RHELv4 system seems to deal with it OK and the TCP data segments from 12.17.249.39 are 1460 bytes. The problem can be fixed by echo 0 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling Now, while this fixes the problem for this site it may cause performance issues with other sites. I don't know at this point and my head hurts. :-) It is hurting since my RHELv4 system has tcp_window_scaling set to 1 and it seems to deal with it. Note: Make sure you issue the echo above after some quite time. The connection must first be rst (reset) before the sides will renegotiate the TCP/IP settings. (That too caused me some grief.) I'll bugzilla it What became of the fix for this issue ? The reason I ask is because I'm now running Fedora 14 and a) I still have the problem and b) about every 3 days I have to edit the tcp_window_scaling file and reset the scaling entry to zero. Something over writes it back to true. Solved, sort of. Was my wireless connection quit. (F14/ 2.6.35/ Intel 4965 )
I solved it, mostly. My problem had several causes. 1) Somehow the router I thought I was using became disconnected. Thus it wasn't available to connect to. 2) When I looked closely, Windows computers were connecting to a different router, not the one I thought. Note to self, more descriptive router SSIDs ! 3) the KDE network manager plasmoid I had installed was from KDE-testing and hadn't been upgraded since November ish. 4) the KDE network manager plasmoid wasn't showing networks that required security or at all. Not sure what was happening here. I solved it with the following steps. 1) I traced the router problem until I encountered the unplugged device. Then the Windows computers could see the network I was after and connect to it. 2) I turned off network management for my wireless device. Configured it manually. This got things working, though apps like Evolution and Firefox wouldn't work because they expect a network manager managed connection and I didn't have one. However, I did have access to yum. 3) I removed the kde networkwork management plasmoid 4) I removed NetworkManager. 5) I rebooted. Now I had a wireless network connection and Evolution and Firefox worked correctly. I'll leave things set up like this for now. In the future I'll set up a network management system again, because its very handy when it works. I hope this helps someone. My F13-F14 upgrade was easiest and best ever.
I'd like to give a shout out to the developers for their work. My upgrade last night from F13 to F14 was the best and easiest Fedora upgrade I have ever done. (And I've been at this since Redhat 8 !) I ran preupgrade and let it do its thing. When it asked me to, I rebooted. For some reason the new session didn't have a working wifi connection. I checked the network settings and rebooted again, just in case. The next session did have a working wifi connection. I then ran yum update, which completed without any issues. Then I rebooted and I've been up on that session ever since. Whoever developed preupgrade deserves a hero cookie, because it is the slickest upgrade process I have ever used. (And I've been at this since the early DOS days.) Back in the Fedora CORE 4(?) days when we used to manually edit the repo files and then run an update and hope for the best. This is so much better ! F14 seems very stable, a bit more polished and a bit faster. Every version is a step ahead now. Its great. Anyway... I'm rambling. Thanks for the great work. Bad drive copy ?
I seem to be doing a lot of things with hard drives these days ! I purchased an external 2 TB SATA hard drive. I connected it to my laptop via a USB interface. Solved: Cant format 1TB USB drive ?
Turns out the drive was bad. They tested it at the retailer and it failed. I ran the same process on the new one and it worked perfectly. # fdisk /dev/sdc Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel Building a new DOS disklabel with disk identifier 0x2586a740.
