They still sell the old keyboards, as well as newer models with USB, the

I have an original (made in 1985 or 1986 IIRC) Model M with the old

the Unicomp USB versions that I use now, and they're great.

In my previous post, I forgot to add the following:
The old IBM model M has no Windows keys. Since only the left Win key seems
to be used, you can simulate that by pressing CTRL+ESC simultaneously.

Hi!

This is a bit borderline but since I guess everybody is using a PC

I recently (less than a year) got a mechanical keyboard (Logitech G512

offered one to my wife, she loved it and "forced" me to get one too.

I had to wash it dismantling the keys, putting them in soap and water,
drying them, etc. I also bought a small hover to suck the potential
dust creating problems (or ... something else). After less than a year
both keyboards have been back under warranty, one because of the RGB
lights breaking on some keys, the other one because of keys not
working after a few hours of work (that's mine).

When having problems (like the space bar, C key, arrows, etc stop
working) I eventually took other keyboards I already have, and then I
really missed the 'typing quality' of the mechanical one.

I also appreciate that the Logitech keyboard do have Free Software
projects allowing you to control each key and set up the lighting the
way you want. You can even do (keyboard) games with those.

I however suffered all those (un)typing issues and am disappointed by
the overall quality. 2 keyboards, 2 went back under warranty (1
replaced, 1... waiting for it).

So let's say I am hooked with the technology but...

Do you guys know of any keyboard with similar typing quality but with
durability and eventually free software driving the RGB lighting? I
can probably live without the RGB stuff as well ;-)

Oh .. I don't play games, just spend the whole day (and night?) behind
(in front of?) my PC.

Thank you.

ps: numeric pad is a must
If you can find an IBM model M keyboard somewhere, you'll never look for
another. They haven't been made in years, AFAIK, but
I have three of them--two full sized and one without the numeric pad
that I use with a laptop at home. The only drawback is
that it's loud--I tried it at the office once when I was still working,
and I had to take it back home. No lights, except  for

Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Sceoll Lock.

Gparted does not make you create partitions. Sure it might prompt you

When I try to add theFedora system to this, it says there is only 1.2

comes up the same way. What am I doing wrong? Or is the drive
defective? GParted doesn't complain about it.

I suppose the "only 1.2 gig available" is confusing. That's some
unallocated part of the drive. Everything that you prepared and
formatted its ignoring as already for use by something else (it doesn't
know they're blank, it's just looking at existing partitions as not
free for it to use).

I haven't played with the latest installation yet, but the prior
install routines didn't need you to prepare a drive first, and I'd
expect the current one to be the same. You can go back to Gparted,
erase your partitions, and make the drive "empty," then install Fedora.

If you like to specify partition sizes yourself, you should get the
chance to do so during the Fedora install. Or, it should be possible
to pick prepared partitions, but you might have to hunt around a bit to
find where manual partitioning is hidden.

I may not have indicated that I already have two systems on the new-type
disk.
I want to be sure to keep them. The "new"  old-type disk is known to the
existing
Linux as /dev/sda.  So I just went to gparted again and erased whatever
was on

sda, and gparted made me have a partition, so I made the whole drive a
partition and formatted it as fat32, which is probably the way it came from
the factory. Is this OK? I'll wait for an answer before proceeding.

Hello. I'm a potential new user, but I'm having trouble with the install.
I have Windows and Leap on one of the new on-board drives, and I
have added /dev/sda, a new Samsung 465 GiB ssd (ordinary type) to
the system.  I formatted it to ext4 using GParted, and it's empty except
for 8.38 GiB at the beginning that GParted must have added. When I try
to add theFedora system to this, it says there is only 1.2 GiB available.
I went back and ran GParted on it again, but it still comes up the same way.
What am I doing wrong? Or is the drive defective? GParted doesn't
complain about it.

Just a note of warning for ink-jet users: Quite a few years ago, I had an
ink-jet
printer--I don't remember the name--and I thought I'd save some money by buying
a
cheap replacement ink cartridge. Well, it clogged up the works, and I could not
fix it. I had to throw the printer out! So go with the manufacturer's ink, even
if
it is expensive. It's cheaper than a new printer!
For HP LaserJets: I think, altho I'm not sure, that off-brand toners will not
work
in an HP machine. I think they code their cartridges. Anyone know better?

Will the scanner work with the XSANE app? I like that because it has

low definition requirements, and then hi def for the occasions that

From the mail, it appears that a software TPM should solve the problem on older
computers,
but it occurs to me that you might not be permitted to install the software
unless
a TPM is found. So, for those who have already tried version 11, has any one of
you
tried installing on an older laptop, and then adding a software TPM, or is this
impossible? --doug

It has nothing to do with the physical keyboard.  It's the keyboard
layout.  You need to be using a layout that has keys defined in those
levels.  What keys are you trying to access?

On the Logitech keyboard the 5 with % and €. Same for Lenovo laptop.
On the Dell XPS 13 laptop the 5 with % and € and the 4 with $ and ₹
(Indian Rupee sign).

I believe that it has not become clear to all readers. In plain words,
you need a keyboard
that has a number panel to the right of the letter keyboard. These
number keys will also,
adjacent to them, on the right, have a - sign at the top right, and a +
sign at the middle right.
These + and - keys have a DIFFERENT key code than the ones on the letter
keyboard.
Laptops don't have a separate number panel, and many--perhaps most--of
the k/b's
that come with new computers don't either. People who don't do numeric
entry for
a living mostly don't need that facility, so it gets left off--and saves
money for the

common fractions, currency symbols, degree signs and other things I

simple to do, without trying to memorize obscure codes. For instance,
Spanish: ¿ ¡ señor, tío: German: Straße,
Fräulein; French: hôtel, françoise; épinards; Italian: è;  ½, ¾ 75°:
€30, £40, 50¥, 10¢. Just combine the letter

I don't think it's originally a windows term.  It's actually "LPT

"line printer" for those of us old enough to remember when printers
could only do lines of text.

I wonder what it was called back in the UNIX days?
According to The Waite Group's UNIX Primer Plus, Second Edition, it was

two mirrors for the install I was using, and one of those
is possibly dead, and the install defaulted to the dead
one.   It went unnoticed, I think because most of their users

out my problem, but I ended up finding two articles on their

So now I have 4 functional operating systems on my

Their leader, Bero, said their server was down yesterday, so I guess
that didn't help. They apparently have a team of at least 10
developers using Element as their chat forum.   They were helpful.
They have one guy doing a mass-rebuild this week.

OpenMandriva uses Calamares installer, defaults to ext4, and
KDE Plasma 5.19 depending on the release you install.

The funny thing is that I still feel like a Linux novice, as there are
hundreds of things that I have no grasp of:    gaming, virtual-machines,
samba, actual practical use of the software, like gnucash, but especially
troubleshooting, and especially with troubleshooting wi-fi, and printer

some others, that require certain types of formatting to run.
OTOH, you really don't need to program to use Linux as your OS. You just
need

to know the syntax of bash in order to use terminal commands, which you will
need to do from time to time.--doug

Limited resources on their computer ??

I can't answer as to Firefox flatpaks, but I can with another package,
MuseScore. On my PC, a RPM version of MuseScore works as expected, the
flatpak version cannot print. You can go through the motions, select
your printer as expected, but nothing ever comes out of the printer. I
see that problem has existed for well over a year without a fix.

Flatpaks are an attempt to make an all-purpose single package that will
work on all distros. Sometimes they (flatpak creators) don't get it
right and your distro is too different from theirs, and things mayn't
work. I can forsee that if things continue to go down that route
they'll start advising people who can't get a package to work to change
distros, instead of fixing their flatpak.

Another source I found recently explains that flatpaks contain a lot of code
that usurps the normal working of the OS, which is why it works on any.
And why it's so slow!

I am not sure if these can do what I am hoping that they can, but I am
thinking of something hooked to my machine that is essentially like an

Do these things exist? Any suggestions? I do not want to give up my

If the tablet is going to be used by a child for remote schooling, it

I have a large Wacom drawing board with a mouse and a stylus. It is good
for
tweaking artwork, but for live video it is no substitute for writing
mathematics on
a whiteboard.

You may find it better to point a camera at a whiteboard or pad of
paper and use an erasable marker or Sharpie.Last I checked,
(Fedora 31) the Wacom drivers didn't work with Wayland.

I see, thanks for this. Surprising that Wacom drivers don't work with Wayland.
Wacom tablet seem to work fine for me all the way to Fedora 32.
Perhaps I am not understanding your point.

I had previously asked for assistance in suppressing superscripting in

So after much searching and futzing around, I found out how to do it:

With a document open, go to Tools>Options>Edit. There are a bunch of

For my Brother printer I downloaded a script directly from Brother

I quote Todd and Margo:

"SoftMaker Office has two types of licensing policies, SoftMaker Office
NX (subscription) and _SoftMaker Office 2021 Professional or Standard

When I read "lifetime licenses" I do NOT read an annual fee for using
the software. Perhaps I'm wrong. I hope Todd and Margo will clarify this
for me and the
other interested parties who have been commenting on this subject. I
would actually rather just _buy_ the Professional version, one time, and
have full
capabilities (and the authorization to use it on two or three machines
at my house, if possible) rather than settle for a watered-down version
like Free Office.
The old policy of offering free answers to simple questions for what was
(I thought) good for the life of the purchased software--i.e., at least
until a new version
was issued, was very attractive to me, and would still be. I am unhappy
with what amounts to a rental agreement, subject to eviction if you
don't cough up a

renewal fee every year.

Paste from something scanned or excerpted from an on-line article, for

That's what i basically need. I occasionally get emailed a schedule
for something I participate in, in spread-sheet format, and as long
as I can read that and print it, it's enough for me. YMMV
(If it turns out I have no choice for some reason, I'll pay the $49.95

I like Softmaker Office. There's a paid version and a free version. It's

don't have any problem with that. It works well, and if you have the

has, but I don't need it.
(I don't need the presentation app either.) You can turn off the
superscripting in the word

good idea if you are

Not really OT since it is a question about usage of utilities under fedora.

I'm sure there are command line options.  However, I've been using HandBrake

a bit to add Chinese subtitles to movies for friends and family.

One of the options when doing this is in the audio area to up the gain.  I've

If you have to increase the gain significantly, the SSN--signal to noise ratio--is likely to take a beating. Try it and

I think 5GHz will go thru ordinary plasterboard walls to a limited
extent. You need to put the base unit fairly high up, so that it has as
much clear air as possible between it and the satellites--i.e., it
should not have to go thru a bookcase or a dresser to get to a
satellite! As usual, ymmv, and some experimentation may help. Try and
keep the base close to the center of the areas you want to put the
satellites in as possible.

I think I'd consider 4 gig of RAM a bare minimum, these days. As
memory size has gone up, programmers seem to have abandoned trying to
be efficient.

If your prior install was apparently okay, you might have been just on
the boundary between where things ran smoothly and were close to
grinding through swap to operate.

When my systems started to go through swap, usually from firefox going
doolallay with some badly written site, it was usually unrecoverable.
I had to quit it real quick, or I could spend the next hour trying to
get the computer to do a clean shutdown.

Use GParted to shrink your swap and expand your normal space. You should
probably not need more than 4 GiB swap. If your repo doesn't have

GParted, you can download a copy and run it from a self-booting disk.
I have used it many times to move partitions around, especially to
reclaim the mess that Windows 10 makes on a new computer.

Buttons wear out, the soldering around the buttons goes bad.

I've had several PS/2 mice, and I think a couple of USB ones, where the
computer didn't seem to supply enough power to drive them, or was
giving them electrical noise, and they'd frequently go whizzing all
over the screen madly clicking on things. On a long cable, or plugged
into front panel sockets they'd do this very often. But plugged
straight into the motherboard socket they were usually fine.

I have at least one mouse that rapidly goes into a power save mode, and
is repeatedly logged as disconnecting when you leave it idle.

I have been using a Kensington trackball for years, and except for
wiping off the ball and wiping up the inside of the base every once in a

If you do not already have a password--I don't know how your system
works--then in the terminal type passwd (return) and it should ask for
one. Enter the password of your choice--the system would like one with
six characters, but may accept one with five.

Then, when you need to access something as root, open the terminal and
type su (return) and then your password. If you already have a root
