I think they held a contest to see who could come up with a design to
most effectively hide the controls for evince. Took me about 20 minutes
to find it when I first wanted to print something in new evince.

Try okular. Comes with some KDE baggage, and the startup is a bit slower,
but it beats the pants off evince, IMO. It actually opens PDFs at a
reasonable magnification level. It feels like a real desktop application,
instead of something bolted on top of libX11. PgUp and PgDn keys actually
work intuitively. The search function does not actually begin at some random
part of the document.

I used evince for many years, before finally giving up fighting with its
navigation and idiosynchronies. Based on this thread, it looks like I don't
really have any need to take another look at it.

I think attempted standardization is a factor. I also think a lot of it
is laziness in supporting multiple displays. The problem I see is at
this point the symbols are getting far too abstract for many people and
there seems to be no steering group that accepts comments or complaints.
After all, an icon's purpose is to obviate textual explanations. Obscure
icons defeat that intent. Perhaps it's just better to harass the
developers. The problem is they've gotten very good at ignoring user
comments.

I remember the old, symbolic UK "Road Work" signs. Some (such as myself)
saw them as stick figures with shovels. Some saw them as stick figures
fighting with cranky umbrellas (those in the UK know what I mean). From
context, it was always clear that they were shovels. I mean, why on
Earth would you need a sign next to the M5 to warn people about bad
umbrellas anyway? But I'm an engineer, so I suppose I don't think like
most people. :-p

While I'm not a fan of bureaucracy in any form, it might be time for
ANSI or ISC to create a committee to address UI issues such as this.

I think it is because of mobiles. The developers try to fit things on
the small real estate, and so make things deeper. It's the problem
with having the same interface for desktops, laptops, and mobiles.
They are trying to build a single interface that can be used on all
platforms versus having an interface optimized for each platform, for
people who switch between platforms often. I presume they think the
learning curve for multiple platform interfaces is more costly than the
diminished user interface on larger screens.

I neverknew what to call that, until a couple of years ago I saw
a software review (don't remember what) where the reviewer wrote about
the "hamburger menu". I had to google for it to find out what he was
on about.

Well, I guess you could "insert stacked food of your preference". For
one of our products, we called it a "hamburger stack", but we're from
the land of Bob's Big Boy double-decker hamburgers (one of the first
and very popular in So. California in the 60's and 70's).

Yes that is where I normally find it, I would click on the word "Print"
in the list that the left-most icon brings up, but "Print" is no longer
there. Perhaps it's a problem related to XFCE, but it always worked

I can print from Okular but the display is near impossible for me to read.

On my evince (V3.30.2), you can click on the hamburger stack (just
to the right of the magnifying glass in the upper right corner). In that
menu, the printer is the left most icon in the row of icons at the top.
