Yes, but I use too many different computers, and I don't want to use an
on-line one.  Even when only using a few computers, having to keep

Let me confess my motivation: In the last month
my bank have said 3 or 4 times that I have given the wrong PIN number,
and has blocked my account.
(I just have to ring them to unblock it, but it is annoying.)

I'm 95% sure I gave the correct PIN number,
but would like to verify that.
I am a little worried that some baddie might have accessed my laptop.
Hopefully that is not so, as I am running shorewall on a home server
in between laptop and internet,
and it shouldn't be possible to get through.
Also I haven't had any warnings,
and don't see anything out of place in my log files.

Any suggestions of likely cause?

When you set a password, you really want to be sure what you're setting.
It took me ages, once, to crack a typing error.  There were so many
combinations that could have gone wrong.  The type it in twice things
are no guarantee that you won't make to identical errors without
noticing.

Likewise, they're a sanity-saver when you're typing in one of those
passwords with stupid composition rules (must have one or more capitals,
alien symbols, and Egyptian hieroglyphics etc.).

Geez, if you're going to make strong password rules, be more thoughtful
about it.  Must be at least so long, but if you type in a long phrase,
we'll let you type in normally (see what you type, and not have to type
in bloody leet-speak).

Though I've once set a pass phrase to what my opinion of a website was,
because of their damned rules, then had to read it back to their support
staff over the phone, later on.

for you and you just copy And later they auto fill. More secure,

Actually, I've installed the unhide-passwords Firefox addon,
and this allowed me to verify that I was indeed typing the correct PIN.
In spite of this, the bank told me it was incorrect.

Could there possibly be an error creeping in
between laptop and bank?

I see that Chrome has a similar addon, Gumshoe,
so my next step is to try that.

Yep. I've been using keepassx for a while now. There are
versions for linux/windows/android/etc. I've got things
setup to rsync copies of the database onto my phone and
tablet from the master copy on my desktop.

I am using Keepass2 and sync with Bittorrent Sync or Syncthing
automatically between my computers and my phone. I am thinking about
using pass though.
I used LastPass in the past which is the most comfortable way so far but
I am a bit concerned about having my passwords in the "cloud".

Also, have you tried "entering" your pin in a text editor as if you were 
on the site.  My culprit was a testy "5" key that didn't always fully 
depress.

what Joe Zeff recommends is what moz devs picked up from an add-on that i
installed many releases back. because i am used to it, with a simple
_single_ click of icon on toolbar, preferred to the 5 click needed to use
what is now built in. plus, it is re-sizable.

there are other password and cookie handlers, but i find these quick and
easy to keep systems synced. if know that systems have different additions,
then a simple;

  cat file1 >> file2

After installing the Firefox scrapbook-x add-on 
I found the rather strange source of my problem.
The first digit in the PIN that I fill in
is always recorded as 1.
However, it can then be changed to the correct value.

I'm not sure if this comes from Firefox "remembering" the PIN,
from the bank software, or from somewhere else.

"script".  All terminal i/o is saved to file "typescript".

Go into the firefox Preferences and look at the password.  If it's 
wrong, tell it to forget that single password.  Then, go to your bank's 
site, make sure you've got it right and tell it to save the password. 
(If you want to be careful, don't tell it to save the password until the 
bank accepts it.)

not to cause, but to something you might try because of possibility that
someone may be trying to access your account.

change your account login name.

something like "timothe murfy", or some other play on sound and spelling.
also, you might add a number or two. anything that will throw off anyone
who has gotten your name and name of bank from a thrown away statement,
an improperly written check that was carelessly discarded. even a
disgruntled employee who was fired and is trying to get back at a former
employer.

doing such, along with an auto entry password add-on would tend to insure
that you and you alone are accessing your online banking.

i have been using online banking for over 30 years and i am now using my
6th change of login name, around 20th password change, along with about
12th changing of security check responses.
