That's generally the case. Various library updates can only be used
after ones in memory are purged, and a reboot can be the only way to
achieve that.

For certain module updates, they're not even a binary install. They're
compiled on your computer. For thinks like akmods, that was somewhere
in the boot-up process. I think some things, now, compile somewhere in
the shutdown process before a reboot. Either way, there's a delay you
need to wait for, and interrupting it causes some chaos. Made all the
more harder by there being little indication on-screen what's going on,
and some people will hard reset in the middle of things thinking the
computer has crashed.

That is a problem that just about requires a reboot.

Nvidia updates can be messy. Did you reboot after the dnf upgrade?

It can take several minutes of background processing to prepare the nvidia
drivers, so it is recommended to wait 5 minutes after running "dnf upgrade"
before rebooting. If you boot before the nvidia drivers are installed the
system
may use the older nvidea drivers or fall back to nouveau (maybe depending
on
how far the update progressed before you rebooted). If you didn't reboot,
the
system should continue running the old nvidia drivers until you reboot.

You should check the version of the nvidea drivers you are currently using.
If you don't want to wait 5 minutes there are ways to determine that the
installation
has finished, e.g, using journalctl.

The kernel drivers no. They are most probably in use, for example by Xorg (if
you use Xorg) and cannot thus be unloaded / reloaded.

> that requires hardware acceleration to run complained that hardware

During the upgrade, the Xorg nvidia drivers may have been updated. Example:

  /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
  /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglxserver_nvidia.so

If your application start after the upgrade or dynamically link those drivers
it may fail due to mismatched version with the kernel modules.

You may see something like that in the journal:

NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 410.79, but
NVRM: this kernel module has the version 415.25. Please
NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
NVRM: components have the same version.

I just had a similar experience upgrading from F34 to F35 using the dnf
plugin. The rpmfusion nvidia-470xx driver packages (for GT710 cards)
were upgraded and installed, but nouveau was active after the reboot,
and the low screen resolution could not be reset. Both systems are ok
now, in X11, but one needed reinstallation of the packages quoted for
'Legacy GeForce 600/700' at https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA.

I have no answer for you.  But you may want to consider taking this question

akmod-nvidia already requires kernel-devel (that matches the currently
running kernel):
$ dnf repoquery --requires akmod-nvidia
Last metadata expiration check performed 0:06:09 ago on Tue Jun 9
07:01:23 2015.
/bin/sh
akmods
kmodtool
/usr/bin/kmodtool
nvidia-kmod-common >= 1:346.72
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-kmodsrc >= 1:346.72

$ dnf repoquery --requires akmods | grep kernel
kernel-devel-uname-r
$ dnf repoquery --whatprovides kernel-devel-uname-r
Last metadata expiration check performed 0:06:29 ago on Tue Jun 9
07:01:23 2015.
kernel-debug-devel-0:4.0.4-301.fc22.x86_64
kernel-devel-0:4.0.4-301.fc22.x86_64
kernel-debug-devel-0:4.0.4-303.fc22.x86_64
kernel-devel-0:4.0.4-303.fc22.x86_64

The same goes for dkms (albeit it only requires kernel-devel rather
than the more specific kernel-devel-uname-r):
$ dnf repoquery --requires dkms | grep kernel
kernel-devel

Note that dkms has nothing to do with akmod* stuff, AFAIK.

I think that it was the problem... Now it works, but yum installed also
kmod-nvidia, which seems to me as something useless if akmod is supposed
to compile the module on the fly if it is missing or if a new kernel is
installed...

BTW why kernem-devel package is not in the dependencies of akmod and/or
of dkms?

Yes dkms was installed when I posted the first message.

kernel-devel also installed?
I had problems too with akmod, and it turned out I was just missing

No! There is no nvidia module at all for this kernel and akmod is
suppose to build it in that case...

But it does not!

Do you have an kmod-nvidia-304xx driver already installed for the kernel
in question? If so, then the akmod package will find nothing it has to
build

OK, I gathered lots of info and posted this to rpmfusion list:

Hopefully this stuff is actually supposed to work and there is just

You need to fix the installation of the NVIDIA binary driver on your system.

Based on your e-mail I don't have enough information to know what the problem
is, but I recommend posting your Xorg.log, dmesg log, list of RPMs you've
installed, etc. and posting that to the RPMFusion list or NVIDIA forum[1].
NVIDIA ships a nifty tool to collect that information in a script called
"nvidia-bug-report.sh" that should be present if you have properly installed the
driver.

May be you missed my reply to you, which was in another thread you had
started. If the GPU supports Optimus then it might create problems at
boot time by installing the Nvidia drivers from rpmfusion or Nvidia
directly.

I also underwent the same problem.

Follow my previous mail:

If your Nvidia supports Optimus technology then you should install
Bumblebee with or without Nvidia properietary drivers. That should cool
down your laptop. I had the same issue & Bumblebee helped. Basically it
stops the use of GPU when not needed but also one needs to invoke the
particular app to run GPU through Bumblebee. It does not do that
automatically right now.

You can read all this at:
http://bumblebee-project.org/
Install it as per:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee

Also give the feedback to the list of how you resolved it for other
users' benefit.

If you want to install the nvidia driver better use this guide, it is
more concise http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia

> so what is the problem ? can i get back to working status ?

When you install nvidia* driver packages it modifies
/boot/grub2/grub.cfg (it's /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg on UEFI
systems) to make sure the nouveau module isn't loaded at boot;
uninstalling those packages should have reverted the changes to
grub.cfg.

If you uninstalled the nvidia packages and the display isn't using the
full HD resolution as before, chances are the changes in grub.cfg
weren't reverted, so check that file and remove these bit:

nouveau.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau video=vesa:off

If you decide to try the nvidia driver again and it still doesn't
work, after you boot post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log to
http://fpaste.org and post a link to it here; or you can use this
command:

fpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Just because things broke shortly after you installed the drivers
doesn't mean they're responsible. This will explain your fallacy in
more general terms:

*Shrug.* The Gnome desktop needs to use your video drivers, so that
makes sense; NetworkManager has nothing to do with video, so the timing
is just a coincidence. Did you bother to follow the link I gave?

It's actually a dual cards(intel+nvidia) problem.
I know there are supports for optimus in newest kernel/xorg/nvidia .

According to http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Optimus/, new kernel supports
seamless switch between intel graphics driver and nouveau.

About nvidia
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.12/README/randr14.html

I have not tried them yet, which seem better options than bumblebee.

Just FYI, there is a pilot project to support Optimus here:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=http://bumblebee-project.org/&k=dsHy%2FVymniCD0osh6tze%2Fw%3D%3D%0A&r=6lbkzZQmkGgL7ITxCWNsIJwNXCdRDnxsPepTVOzWl24%3D%0A&m=3Qq%2B1AAJhQnjOt2h7xWd%2BDcnmbrne%2FqGqK2MjngD%2BG8%3D%0A&s=a2ea19ae2ab35b2036fd8b9ba407232d886e4779e44c3ac0edc884797b64bcb1.
I'm using it and the Intel driver seems
fine. On my system, the disadvantage is that the external display is
attached to the nVidia driver, so I can't use it without some hacking
around that I haven't had time to do. The other disadvantage is that
driver switching isn't seamless. You need to invoke programs you want
to run on the nVidia card with a wrapper program.

Re: NVidia driver installation under UEFI+CSM mode

2013-11-05 Thread WangWentao
I have tried the repos version, but it doesn't work either.

There is also an intel card along with nvidia card, so it supports optimus, but
I can't disable it in BIOS.

I have tried a few methods:
   * specify BusID in xorg.conf
   * remove nouveau module(blacklist+dracut)
   * increase vmalloc

However, there is only a very dark screen after boot.

Using the binary blob from nVidia is probably the worst way to go. Not
only does it mangle several important system files, it has to be done
again every time there's a kernel update. There's a much better "fire

Well, later in that thread I found this command suggested (but for a
different reason to mine):

killall -9 compiz;killall -9 gtk-window-decorator;metacity --replace&

Running that from a CTRL-ALT-F2 terminal whils the desktop was frozen
allowed me to get back to the gnome desktop where I could then disable
desktop-effects. Now I can reboot and log in with no problems - I've
just lost my beloved desktop-on-a-cube that's all..

You could file a bug with RPM Fusion[2] since it provides the nvidia package.

I've been able to replace the nouveau driver with an nvidia one by (1)
adding rdblacklist=nouveau to the active kernel entry in grub.conf and
(2) yum install kmod-nvidia-PAE. The last little "Gotcha!" for his
problem was the need to run nvidia-settings as root (rather than from
the Applications --> System Tools --> nvidia Display Settings menu):

sudo nvidia-settings

Otherwise I was unable to permanently activate the second monitor by
saving the X configuration file.\

Thanks for the help with this!

I spent quite a bit of time fighting with this over the weekend and
found that the only thing that worked was lowering or disabling selinux,
and then only the kmod-nvidia rpm way worked -->when normally I use the
.bin file from Nvidia because it's the only way that usually works for
me.

Some people claim the driver didn't work without it, while others
(myself included) have found it made no noticeable difference(?). It
only takes 1 extra reboot to test this.

I would guess no (not any more). I didn't need it when I tested it on
a few different systems. I think it was needed once upon a time.
Again, test your installation without running that command (more
secure). If you find SELinux errors in your log files or that the
driver won't load due to SElinux then execute that command.

Typically when you 'yum' install the Nvidia driver like this, it is
built for a specific kernel. The yum command may also install a new
kernel in order to match the nvidia driver. Going back the previous
kernel should work (I think). Try and see, no harm done.

In the case of a locked X-server, you can as you state go back to runlevel 3.
To force this at grub, hit a key to see the kernels menu and select
one but don't hit enter.
Hit 'E' (to edit) and scroll to the end of the 'kernel' line and add '3'.
Then hit enter and 'B' to boot.
Then you can do the steps you stated to remove.

Hope that helps.

I don't think that's a clue to my problem, as (a) I have
rdblacklist=nouveau as a boot parameter, (b) the nouveau module is not
loaded on my machine, and (c) the nvidia driver starts just fine. It's
only nvidia-config-display that's crashing.

For your problem, try adding rdblacklist=nouveau to the kernel line
in /etc/grub.conf. The nouveau kernel module is part of the kernel
package, not the xorg-drv package.

Re: nvidia driver strangeness

I am seeing exactly the same issue on a brand new, clean install of
Fedora 13 on a desktop machine. The result is that X won't start and the
machine is essentially unusable.

The only clue I have is that the nouveau module is loaded, despite
having used yum to remove nouveau.

The graphics card is a GeForce 6200

Help would be gratefully received!

Why couldn't you boot with the older kernel?

No problem but I sure would like to get 195 back in as the cuda 3 solved
quite a few problems but I do not want to have to recompile kernel after
every driver update and thats what we have to do with Nvidia installers

Oh well, wait and see.

I am just glad I did not have to wipe 4 tbit of drive because of a
kernel update like the switch from 2.6.31 to 2.6.32

I just came from a Win 7 enviroment but I would never go back to windows
as my Phenom 2 945 has basically doubled speed with Fedora using Boinc
and Seti

Fedora rocks

I did not have any overheat problem with 195.36 but I am glad they are
at least protecting us in some way.

I look forward to it as cuda 3 is much better than 2.3

I incorrectly said that the Nvidia 195 driver has a fan control bug.

The bug is in the 196 driver. Sorry for the bad info.

Nvidia pulled the 195 driver due to a fan control bug that can make your
card overheat. It will probably be fixed next week. Patience.
