Re: Boot with 1.44" Floppy, then net install from thumb drive?
Hello Michael. Thanks for your very welcome message and assistance. Yep, it looks as though the only USB hardware that my bios understands during setup or boot is the USB floppy drive that came with the laptop. The bios' USB legacy setting does affect the ability to boot as you have correctly indicated, but only for the recognized floppy drive. I tried connecting other USB devices such as cameras and memory card readers, but nothing seems to interest the bios except the floppy drive. That being the case, then I'm not all that confident that booting from an external USB CD drive would achieve success. Happily there may be a simpler solution. I had a quick look at the PXE server idea that you proposed too, Michael. This is a new concept for me, and I'll come back to it for a better appreciation when I get a quiet moment. I think it could be installed on an old FC10 system that I haven't run much for a while now, though I came to a point where the setup complexity began to look excessive, especially when contrast against temporarily shifting the laptop hard drive to a USB bootable machine for the installation, then hoping it remains operational when transferred back to the laptop. Well, both plans have their drawbacks, though I think a more satisfactory work-around may exist. When I copied the Net installation iso of Fedora to my USB flash drive using the Fedora LiveUSB creator, I noticed that the pre-existing FAT32 filesystem on the thumb drive had been unaltered, and that DOS readable files for the live image and Network installation had been added in 4-new directories. Presumably some sort of boot loader, that is able to read the FAT32 filesystem files, was added to the boot sector region of the flash drive. Install the boot loader, and away you go. Okay, so who can tell me which bootloader is written into a thumb drive's boot sector, when the Fedora LiveUSB Creator tool prepares a USB flash drive using one of the installation iso images? Very long winded, sorry. Thanks for the read, and for any contributions toward consideration and resolution of the matter. T. From: Michael D. Setzer II To: M de Luis Sent: Wednesday, 2 January 2013 1:30 PM Subject: Re: Boot with 1.44" Floppy, then net install from thumb drive? A couple of questions. Are you 100% that it will not boot from a flash? Many bios require that a flash has to be plugged in to the system to actually select it as a boot device. Second, you may have to set an option for legacy USB as well. On another issue, it might be worth seeing if you could get an USB external CDROM and perhaps have it boot from that. Don't think a floppy would be able to load any linux kernel. You might be able to get a boot loader link syslinux or grub4dos, but don't know what it would require to then pass control to a usb. If it has network boot, you could setup a PXE server, but that seems to be a lot of setup and requirements. Would suggest looking into the bios options and usb cdrom. Unless my brain cells are giving out, old 3.5" floppies hold only 1.44mb of data. Given that a modern kernel is already four times that big, I just can't see any way of bootstrapping off that. I don't think that even grub can fit onto a floppy (let's revisit the entire escapade of grub blowing up when the first partition starts at sector 63). There might be ancient Linux distros, based around circa 2.0-version kernels floating out there, that might have a boot/root install path. But kernels of that vintage are not likely to have much, if any USB support. You'll just have to get that CD drive fixed. pgptN36mur7nw.pgp Description: PGP signature -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines Have a question? kernel floppy driver is broken?
When I do (at F17 i686 kernel 3.5.2) high-level FAT floppy disc format ("mformat a:" which work with /dev/fd0), then mformat process will remain forever in uninterruptible sleep state, thus is non-killable. Ejecting floppy not solve this too, and it seems as machine reboot is only solution (I'd like to mislead). Although this situation is perhaps induced by some defect on floppy disc, it seems as floppy driver is broken. Should it have some efect bugreport this issue, or fd is dead kernel module yet? F13 boot floppy??
Yes, floppy. I have an old Dell PowerEdge SC 1420, originally a server, now mainly for backups and bulk storage; I used to have to burn a boot.iso to CD, and put a Fedora DVD into an external USB drive in order to be able to upgrade it. Last time was much easier; preupgrade worked, no sweat, and it ran fine for a long while. Then I goofed it up. (Never mind how -- sheer stupidity, mistaking it for another machine on my LAN that did have trouble.) So I want to try F13 in rescue mode -- unless there's a better way. (Remember, it doesn't seem to be able to get its electrons around the idea of a DVD, even with Fedora and the external drive to help. Or unless there's a boot.iso, small enough for a CD, that I somehow failed to find.) Point is, it does seem to recognize an external USB floppy drive just fine, and maybe even be willing to boot from one ... -- Beartooth Staffwright, Neo-Redneck Not Quite Clueless Power User I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is. -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

1: Download which iso you require: http://www.freedos.org/freedos/files/ 2: yum install isomaster 3: add your unzipped bios files to the iso 4: burn the updated iso. Thoughts on floppy disks
I was recently following the advice in the Fedora-13 Installation Guide to setup a pxeboot server, and it recommended that one should read the syslinux documentation in /usr/share/doc/syslinux-3.84/syslinux.txt . (Actually, the Guide says syslinux.doc , but that seems to be a typo.) In any case, this document, which is dated 1994-2009, seems to be entirely concerned with "CREATING A BOOTABLE LINUX FLOPPY". There are several other places in the Fedora-13 documentation where I have come across mention of floppy disks. (And several Linux programs spend time looking for /dev/fd0 .) Do floppy disks still exist? Are computers with floppy drives still being made? It seems to me that as an absolute minimum any documentation mentioning floppy drives should at least explain how CDs can be used to the same end. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland -- users mailing list users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe or change subscription options: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines

How do you setup a floppy in FC 13 fstab. I can boot off of a dos disk at startup, but I have a floppy that was formatted by WinXP Pro and it won't boot up or mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/floppy /mnt/floppy , ntfs-3g is installed. Floppy problem temporarelly solved
Hello, I for while trying to get the floppy drive to work, then today I found a suggestion in one of bugzilla to use the "modprobe floppy" command to get the floppy to appear in the computer, that worked, but still could not access the floppy but now aloud me to mount floppy by entering the fallowing commands: #mkdir /media/floppy #mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /media/floppy Now the floppy Icon appeared in the desktop, it works fine, the floppy Icon under the computer, however, still does not work. I hop that some expert will understand better what is going on and be able to fix. Let me/us know what the bug ID is of what you end of submitting as I have this feeling it will all end up be related and a fix in one will impact the other. I haven't flashed my wx8000 nor moved it from F9 as it works quite nicely and don't want to mess. Not to mention I really don't want to deal with what happens if I make a mistake in flashing. The bug was submitted against x4000 which no longer have BIOS updates and I know they are at the latest. Plus, I have to admit a floppy drive is only a convenience for me, not a mandatory.
