Re: [one-users] monitor_ds.sh in a shared storage environement

2014-06-12 Thread Armin Deliomini
Thank you. Makes everything clearer for me.

I'll create the feature request and when I have the next free time slot,
I'll see if I find some alternative ways to get the data ...

Thanks, Armin

2014-06-11 12:33 GMT+02:00 Jaime Melis jme...@opennebula.org:

 Hi Armin,

apologies for the delay in the reponse.

The problem here is that ideally we want to report the maximum size of the
images if they are sparse images. If we have a 10G sparse image that is
taking up only 1G in space, we would like to report the 10G amount, and not
1G, since we would like to guarantee available space in the datastore.
That's why we cannot use `df`.

In any case, the system now in place is not properly reporting the image
size, since we would need to be using `du --aparent-size`. So as for now,
switching from `du` to `df` should be a plausible workaround with no real
impact, except better performance. On the other hand, as you have reported
`du` generates a lot of I/O, so ideally we would need to be doing is to get
the USED disk space directly from OpenNebula.

To sum it up, we have these two related issues to improve this:
 http://dev.opennebula.org/issues/2783
 http://dev.opennebula.org/issues/2402

As for your particular case, I think you should modify monitor_ds.sh with
 a call to `df` instead of `du`.

   - is it needed to check the datastores from every single host (if it is
a shared environment and the opennebula server itself has access to the
 datastores)?
The monitorization driver is very simple (in order to be easily adapted),
and there is no way to orchestrate this. It would be a very nice thing to
have though, feel free to open a feature request to implement this.

   - why is the base_path checked at all? isn't it enough to check the
datastores? there is du run on all the directories twice and du is very
 resource consuming ...
This is a tricky one. If the mountpoint does not exist
(/var/lib/one/datastores/id) it can be created automatically by
opennebula, but only when the first VM is executed. OpenNebula needs to
know in this case if there will be enough space in the datastore, and it
assumes that if the mountpoint doesn't exist yet it will have the same
space available as the parent folder, which is the datastore location:
/var/lib/one/datastores. That's why we need to be checking that too.

 Regards,
 Jaime

 Hi!

 Platform: Ubuntu 12.04 + KVM
 Opennebula 4.6.1

I recently upgraded from opennebula 4.2 to 4.6.1 ending up in hosts not
beeing monitored anymore. After some investigation I found out, that there
is a new remote monitoring script, monitor_ds.sh.

I have a shared storage environment (some central Netapps sharing NFS)
and so my question is: the script is executed on all the hosts, so all
hosts run a du -sLm on all datastores and the base_path
(/var/lib/on/datastores) which can consume quite some storage performance
 unnecessarily.

In my case hosts haven't been monitored at all, because there was a
driectory containing millions of small files in one of the datastores (used
as a temp location without thinking of the consequences) and du would never
 finish in time.

 There are two questions:

  - is it needed to check the datastores from every single host (if it is
a shared environment and the opennebula server itself has access to the
 datastores)?

  - why is the base_path checked at all? isn't it enough to check the
datastores? there is du run on all the directories twice and du is very
 resource consuming ...

Is there a reason for this I am missing?

 Thx, Armin

Are you using CentOS/RHEL and the standalone Sunstone server? There is a
bug in the startup scripts for this distribution and novnc server is not
started. You can check if the novnc proxy is started with this command:

$ ps axuww | grep websocketproxy

A new patch release is about to be released and fixes this problem.
Meanwhile you can start novnc proxy using its start script:

# service opennebula-novnc start

Maybe is not exactly what you want but I think this can be
accomplished with scheduled actions:

 Hello,
one of the features we'd like for OpenNebula is to allow for time-based
 deployments of virtual machines.

We'd love ON to support the following two scenarios:
 - upon a new deployment alongside the number of virtual machines to deploy,
the template, etc, the user also specifies for how long (in terms of time -
days/minutes/hours/seconds ) it is going to need the given virtual
 machine(s);

 - similarly, the user could alternatively specify from when (the starting
 time, from now to the future) to when (anytime after the start time);

Optionally, sunstone should offer a nice calendar-view with the
 current/future deployments.

Do you know if such features are scheduled for a future release of
 OpenNebula ?

2014-06-12 Thread Valerio Schiavoni
Dear Javier,
thanks for the pointer to the scheduled actions support.
True, this goes already in the direction of what I was asking, I was not
aware of this feature.

Is there an easy way to list all the VMs which do not have a scheduled
shutdown (so that we can send reminders to those users) ?

Then, it would be awesome to have a calendar-view that shows, according to
the scheduled actions, how many virtual machines are going to be running in
a given period of time, etc. That is, to make the open-nebula provisioning
system aware of the scheduled action.

Best regards,
Valerio

 Hi Maria,

Now virtual machine boots from cdrom .iso but the network group not creates

 this was successfully.

OpenNebula will create a port group in the vSwitch if the host and
networks are correctly configured to use the dynamic network mode:

http://docs.opennebula.org/4.6/administration/networking/vmwarenet.html

Have you configured it that way?

I’d like import .iso from datastore upload before from VMware.

If you chose to import images giving a path, this path needs to be
available from the OpenNebula front-end, which doesn't have access to
the /vmfs/volumes paths of the ESX.

Best,

 Hi Maria,

The guest VM is not finding a valid OS because it is trying to launch one
from the context CDROM, which doesn't contain a valid OS.

To solve this, please disable the context for the VM. For this, update the

[one-users] New maintenance release 4.6.2

2014-06-12 Thread Javier Fontan
We have just released a new maintenance release 4.6.2. This time it
does not come with new features, just bug fixes.

One of them is a security vulnerability in Sunstone and you should
upgrade your installation. Thanks to Dennis Felsch and Mario
Heiderich from Horst Görtz Institute for IT-Security,
Ruhr-University Bochum for telling us about it. [1]

Other fixes are as follows:

* Xen localtime feature broke the deployment file [2]
* Fix some problems with double quotes in Sunstone [3]
* CentOS Sunstone start scripts did not start novnc [4]

In case you have 4.6.1 installed the upgrade is straightforward as the
config files have not changed.

http://docs.opennebula.org/4.6/release_notes/release_notes/index.html

Happy upgrading.

  Hi Maria,

Now virtual machine boots from cdrom .iso but the network group not creates in
vmware. I don?t know why. Another times
this was successfully.

OpenNebula will create a port group in the vSwitch if the host and
networks are correctly configured to use the dynamic network mode:

http://docs.opennebula.org/4.6/administration/networking/vmwarenet.html

Have you configured it that way?

I?d like import .iso from datastore upload before from VMware.

If you chose to import images giving a path, this path needs to be
available from the OpenNebula front-end, which doesn't have access to
the /vmfs/volumes paths of the ESX.

Best,

Hello,

it will overwrite those two files, so simply do a backup as you suggested
and restore them after upgrade. Since that hasn't changed it will work
without any further changes.

Hi Tino,

Could you send me a pic on how to create an image from the sunstone with a PATH?
I tried to import an image from the Marketplace but always get an
error when I'm copying image from /var/lib/one/tmp/ in vmware
datastore.

I saw that in /tmp there is a folder:

/var/lib/one/tmp/f3b106cc53dbb9e74d3716fa9021a26e/CentOS6.2.2-1/CentOS6.2-flat.vmdk

/var/lib/one/tmp/f3b106cc53dbb9e74d3716fa9021a26e/CentOS6.2.2-1/disk.vmdk

I thought the vmdk subfolders might be a problem and moved it to a
higher level as well:
/var/lib/one/tmp/f3b106cc53dbb9e74d3716fa9021a26e/CentOS6.2-flat.vmdk
/var/lib/one/tmp/f3b106cc53dbb9e74d3716fa9021a26e/disk.vmdk

But the error persists.
