I'm not sure what "Fedora factor" could mess here, but:

1) take a look at compilation commands of kannel and mbuni (is -fPIC
flag present in both cases)

2) remove any old installation of kannel before installing new one;
also check ld.so.conf: do newly installed kannel libs directory appear
on the search path before any other places where kannel libs may be
located? Maybe mbuni tries to link against any other version of kannel
libs it finds in your system

solvable somehow (however I don't remember the actual solution). Maybe
try:

for both projects instead of --with-cflags option.
