My Open Office document's problems

2014-08-14 Thread missy mendoza
Dear User Support
My Open Office document which I typed and saved, now opens with: the annoying
ASCII Filter Options window; then, blank. What has caused this? When the ASCII
Filter Options window opened, I clicked 'LF' paragraph break, character set
'Uni-code,' and 'OK.' Then, my document opened blank. What are the steps to fix
and prevent this problem? What are the steps to remove and prevent filters
being in my Open Office software and its' documents, and to get my saved
document's text reappearing?

Your file is most likely damaged beyond repair. Such damage can be caused by
over hasty shut down of the computer before the software and hardware write
buffers have had time to flush.

Look in the Backup directory pointed to by OpenOffice (/Tools /Options
/OpenOffice : Backup) and rename any .bak file to .ods and see if it contains
any of your content.

Look also in the temporary directory pointed to by OpenOffice
(/Tools /Options /OpenOffice : Paths) and rename any files there to type .ods.
See if they contain any of your content.

If using Windows run PhotoRec or Recuva (search for and download one of these)
and see if it finds an erased temporary file. If using a Mac, search for an
"undelete" utility. Sometimes the above methods work, but if no immediate
success I'd start rewriting.

AOO have a series of example database tables that you can experiment with:
File|New|Database|Create new database|Finish|allow to save|Tables|Use
Wizard to Create Table| then you will find sample Business and Personal
tables you can experiment with - Business|Property might be a good place
to start. Also see:
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation

However, as others have pointed out, you might look to a pre-built
application better suited to your requirements.

problem with installation

2014-08-14 Thread wjs
I have tried downloading Open Office three times and each time the setup
program seems to work well. However, the program freezes about three quarters
of the way through the installation process. This same problem happens every
time. I am running windows 7. Can you advise me what I need to do to get it
to work?

Thank you for your help.

Don't know from the information you've provided but typical ways to prevent
install problems would include:
- first look in Control Panel to see if Windows thinks OpenOffice was
installed. If it does try the uninstall

then

- use OpenOffice install only if downloaded from https://www.openoffice.org
(you are redirected to http://sourceforge.net but that's okay)

- make sure Windows is clean and stable (no malware on system, registry
doesn't have spurious entries)
-- Malwarebytes is great for cleaning malware from system,
https://www.malwarebytes.org/
-- CCleaner is great for cleaning kruft from registry,
https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

- make sure Windows is up to date (latest updates have been run)

- if install still not successful make sure Antivirus is shut off and try
install again BUT be sure to turn Antivirus back on when you're done!

Alan -

Thank you for the pointers to the malware cleaner and registry cleaner
programs.

Very valuable to tuck away in case of future need.

Thanks again.
