Mr Berwyn H Price: indeed the latest version won't work on Windows 98; support for Windows 98 was discontinued several years ago (and maybe you are using a CD with the official version that came with a magazine, it was more common at the time). What disk? Where did you get the disk? I suspect you purchased the disk from a third party reseller, and if so, you are taking several risks. I urge you to DOWNLOAD the Open Office 4.0.1 or 4.1.0 or whatever it is this week directly from either: www.openoffice.com or www.sourceforge.com These are the two official sites from which to obtain Open Office. The downloads are without charge for the Open Office program. You may have fees associated with your ISP in providing the download connection. Re: Can't Use 4.0
Ken, Right click or control click Apache Open Office icon and follow dialog in window that pops up. You will only need to do this once. When you update to a newer version the first time you run it you will need to do it again. Read this page on OS X Gatekeeper for more information. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290 Since you are not subscribed to the users list I have sent a copy of this to you. If you have any further questions please respond to the list and not to my address. Opening TXT files is sluggish
TXT files are taking a lot longer to open - at least, the first one during a logon session. Subsequent TXT files open more quickly. DOC files open normally. I'm running W/7 Home Premium on a Dell PC. Any ideas? Maurice Howe Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone.
caps lock on/off indicator
HI, I LOVE OPEN OFFICE BUT I HAVE APPARENTLY DELETED THE CAPS-LOCK INDICATOR. IT APPEARED IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE SCREEN WHEN USING THE WORD PROCESSOR. HOW DO I GET IT REESTABLISHED AGAIN? I AM RUNNING A DELL COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS 7. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. EARL WELSH

Word program crashed
I have had trouble lately opening documents. This morning it was suddenly impossible. Finally a screen told me the program (I guess the whole Open Office although I only use the word part) had crashed and by restarting my computer it would right itself. However, before that message about the crash came up I followed a troubleshooting directive and when it finished it asked me to say OK to something it changed. Now when I try to open a document it says Error, this operation needs elevation. Also, when I try to open Open Office from my desktop shortcut, a window asked if I would allow this unknown source to make changes, and when I click Yes, nothing happens, it just goes away. I assumed this was part of the self-recovery. Is there a way to recover my word program without taking the computer to a repair person? Thanks, Eleanor Lawrie

If you are in "OpenOffice Draw" (look at the title bar of the window), then you can double click the layer tab at the button of the working area. Please look if the option "Locked" is checked and if yes, uncheck it. And you should make sure, that the document is not write protected by your operating system. Such can happen, if you try to open a document directly in your email client or if you copy a document from CD. If this does not help, then you need to tell more details. What operating system do you use? Windows, Linux, MAC? What OpenOfice module do you use? Impress, Draw, Writer? What kind of thing is a "map"? Some drawing objects or a picture with hot spots or a table? What file format has the document? Don't know from the information you've provided but typical ways to prevent install problems would include: - first look in Control Panel to see if Windows thinks OpenOffice was installed. If it does try the uninstall then - use OpenOffice install only if downloaded from https://www.openoffice.org (you are redirected to http://sourceforge.net but that's okay) - make sure Windows is clean and stable (no malware on system, registry doesn't have spurious entries) -- Malwarebytes is great for cleaning malware from system, https://www.malwarebytes.org/ -- CCleaner is great for cleaning kruft from registry, https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner - make sure Windows is up to date (latest updates have been run) - if install still not successful make sure Antivirus is shut off and try install again BUT be sure to turn Antivirus back on when you're done! - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org
