Calc making up its own (tiny) mind.... (2)

2023-12-14 Thread ACG

Dear All,

Sorry... belay this request.
I have found and deleted the autocorrect item

I was using calc to complete the Private Eye Christmas Crossword puzzle.
One letter one cell

Although I entered everything in lower case, most - but not all! - of
the "i" s defaulted to capital I as soon as I pressed "enter".
No other letter does this and two "i"s remains lower case. They are both
in column "j" - but I have not specified this column as different from
the rest.

I tried opening a new sheet and this time "i" defaults to "I" ALL the time
Other letters are not affected in this way.

Please can someone tell me what is going on and how to fix it?

OK Jada, I understand,
You have your text justified right AND left - so the program is
inserting spaces to suit. (this is the right hand end of the four options)
So  if you don't want the text justified switch to justified Left (the
first option) and you will have your single spaces and a ragged right
hand side.

Hello Jada,

I am not familiar enough with OO to know why you are generating the
double spaces in the first place, but once your document is complete it
is very easy to get rid of them.
Simply use "Find and Replace". In the "find" type two spaces (ie use the
space bar twice)

In the "replace" type one space.
Then click on "replace all".
You may need to click on "replace all" more than once to be sure.

Re: How can I waterproof my document

2023-06-24 Thread ACG

Hello Jada,

I think you may mean watermark rather than waterproof!! But I don't
think this prevents copying.

This is extremely difficult to do effectively as it is so easy to find
workarounds.
The best way would probably to save each page as an image rather than
text and then save it as .pdf - there may be an easy way to do this
commercially, but it is unlikely to be cheap.

You can set it as "read only" - but the problem here is that it is easy
for anyone to "copy and paste", creating their own editable document.

I had this problem recently and I resorted to hard copy. Quite a lot of
printing (and then there is the cost of delivery). But I think this is
really the only safe way.
By the way I think that you will get far better feedback from hard copy.
First they can write on your pages and secondly no-one will be
frustrated from seeing only one screenful at a time. With hard copy you
can stick fingers  (or other bookmarks) into several different places to
be able to  flip back and forth

Re: OT: Re: File [not] deleted

2021-12-14 Thread ACG
Correct the wail of many a Scottish school student despite being
caught redhanded

"It was not me"

/À nos devoirs/: (French, meaning: to the business at hand)

I am running Windows 10 (machine too old to upgrade, sadly) and I have a
short-cut to OO writer on the start menu.
It shows recent documents and here you can pin individual items to the
menu - so they will stay there even if otherwise they would have dropped
off the top 10 (or however many it is).

At any one time I will have a small number of documents I am referring
to from time to time - so I will pin them for a period and then when the
project has reached a conclusion (eg I have put the paper up online)
then I will unpin it and in due course it will slide back into oblivion
(ie the folder where I put it in the first place). Because the topics I
am writing about overlap it is sometimes hard to make a clear and
sensible choice as to which folder should be their home (and often this
means going up several layers of nesting before descending as many again
etc - which is why Brian's comments (below) while drôle are not
actually apposite.

My remarks were primarily aimed at the list on the start menu. An
upgrade to OO voided this list altogether and if I then opened the
document via the recent documents frop down menu within the program
itself this was not enough to put it back on the start menu recent
document list.
Only by going to the file itself and invoking OO writer by clicking on
the file in question would it then be recognised and placed on the start
menu recent list.

Although I was very annoyed at the time - and it took a while to work
out what was going on - I am no masochist, so I have not recreated the
problem for myself. However on occasion I have had to open a document
from the RD menu in the program and then start the Save As process to
establish where it is located. I can then go to the correct folder and
open it /ab initio/ from there - putting it onto the start menu  RD list
so that I can then pin it if required.

Returning to Brian's remark: we all know what happens to memory
(computer and human) as it gets full: search time increases
asymptotically. Such brain as I have left is far too valuable to be
cluttered with car keys (always put them back in their place or there is
serious trouble) or document folders.

Adrian Grant

You appear to be unaware of what the "recent documents" list is.
It is nothing more than a very simplistic record of files that were
previously opened/used by the software at some point in time. If those
files have been relocated/deleted by anything outside of the software's
control, the "recent documents" pointers/shortcuts to those locations
will be invalidated.
If you, as a user, choose to reconstruct/repopulate that list of
pointers/shortcuts that is your choice, but it is not something the
software should be expected to continuously track across your entire OS
file system and continuously rebuild.
"In my NOT so humble opinion", for inexperienced computer/software users
the "recent documents" list is the worst, most misleading and confusing
thing ever added to the software. It is only useful if you genuinely
understand what it really is and how it functions.

I wonder whether you actually have the same problem I had.
"Recent Documents" could be stored anywhere - and if you go the the
folder(s) I'll bet they are still there.
The problem is that OO is not very clever at saving the list of "recent
documents".
If you open OO first then you may find them in THAT list - but even if
you open them from that list they will still not appear on the desktop
shortcut icon list.
However if you go to the folder where it is kept and open it from there
then it SHOULD return to the "recent documents" list.
It's a bit of a faff - and you have to remember where they all are - but
you should get there in the end.

missing feature (2)

2021-03-02 Thread ACG

Dear Open Office people,

My mistake here.
It seems that when I installed the update the list of "recent" documents
was wiped.
It seems further that because the program no longer recognised any
"recent" documents it also failed to show the heading "recent" on the
pop up menu.

Since using Writer again it has reappeared

Adrian Grant

Dear Open Office people,

Sorry but I am not really "getting" how all this works.
I did have a log-in facility when Open Office was under Sun/Oracle - but
this seems not to have transferred.

Since downloading the recent update I am disappointed to see one feature
appears to have been removed.
When I want to go back to a file I have used recently  I would click on
the start button and then right click on the Open Office Writer short
cut icon that appeared. As with MS Word, Acrobat Reader etc.  a list of
"recent" documents would pop up.

The Writer icon had quite a short list, but it was nevertheless useful.
Now no longer - so I have to open Open Office, open Writer (so a new
document appears) and only then, within writer can I access "recent
documents" from an element in a submenu.

yours etc.
