Re: Spreadsheet

2023-06-26 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi,

the easiest way to fix this within a spreadsheet is to do a
search&replace with regular expressions option activated.

open the search&replace dialog using Ctrl+F and activate "regular
expression" within the "more options" part of that dialog.

search: .*

replace: &

This will remove all trailing single quotes from cells.

Subject: Can't edit my PDF files

Hi,
My name is David Di Giacomo and I have been an Apache Open Office user
for many years and have never encountered any problems with it. I think it is a
great program. However in the last 2-3 weeks I have encountered a problem, it
will not allow me to edit imported PDF documents.
I will explain what process I have always used in order to implement Open
Office,
1.) I scan a required document on my HP printer and send it to my computer as a
PDF file.
2.)I then open the scanned document, highlight it and then press control/C to
copy this document.
3.) I then open Open Office and click on Text Documents, when the Open Office
blank pages appears I then press control/V to paste this document. I have
always used this method and never have had any issues.
This is where my problem begins, when the importation to Open Office has been
completed, the document does appear but is imported with small squares on each
corner and middle outer edges. I then click my cursor outside the document and
the squares disappear but as soon as I go back into the body of the document a
cross hair symbol appears which allows me to relocate the document but will not
allow me to edit any of the text.
Telstra has downloaded all extensions but unfortunately it still did not work.
I really would appreciate if you can assist me with this problem for as I said
before I really like using this program.
If you can't fix this problem could you please suggest an alternative program.
   Best Regards
 David Di Giacomo

Re: Embedded link

2022-08-22 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi John,

it depends on what kind of link this is.

If you dragged a document from the systems file manager then this object
might be embedded as OLE object. If you doubleclick onto this object
then the assigned application will open as object within the
spreadsheet. To remove the object just select it and press the delete
button.

If it is a hyperlink then allocate the cell cursor to a cell next to the
cell containing the hyperlink, then use the keyboard to go the the cell,
press the F2 function (edit mode) key and delete the content of that cell

If it is a form control object (eg. a button or a combo box) then select
the select button in menu item /View/Toolbars/Form Controls/, select
that object in design mode (on) and press the delete button.

Hi,

transparency is not part of the cell formatting options but of the

I suspect you're using a Mac OS system:

Regarding crashes when using transperency it might be possible that it

You could try out the printing output options in /tools/options/printing

Hi Brian,

a literal is a text. If you want to replace a number which is formatted

This works well for me upon the Target Cell being the result or a
manual entry.

However, this doesn't work when the Target Cell contains a formula. (
I appreciate that the formula setup as above is correct and that it
now recognizes that the Target Cell is populated so is ">0" - just
that viewed in real life - no actual value yet exists.)

Maybe there's a way of re-addressing the value "0" in the 1st part
though it would be nice for a private user to be able to keep their
formulas simple.

So - not necessary a fault or bug or anything at all - just a thought
in case it's possible.

I am wondering if there is a better method to use to "register" a newly
created template in AOO-Calc.  What I have just done is;

1. Delete content of any and all cells that contain numeric data and/or
unwanted text strings within an existing, similar, Calc spreadsheet
    (.ods)
2. Save the spreadsheet file in a template file format (.ots)
3. Use Windows File Explorer to drill down to the 'template' folder,
    (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\template), and
4. Save the newly created template

Step 3. above takes a bit of time to finish.  Is there an easier way to
accomplish this task within AOO-Calc?  Can someone point me to the
relevant documentation or offer an easier procedure?

Thanks for reading this, and please stay safe.

Re: Connecting to database remotely

2020-05-16 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi,

if you have installed a 32 bit java (I would recommend Java 8 in this
case and it should be 32 bit because OpenOffice is 32 bit) and you've
connected OpenOffice with the installed Java via menu item
tools->options->OpenOffice->Java

then you can setup a JDBC remote connection to your database

click on "Database" on the OpenOffice dashboard
check the "connect to an existing database" radio button
then click on "Next >>>" button

place your cursor into the field "Datasource URL" and press the F1 key
where this kind of unified resource locator (URL) is discribed more
deeply (eg. mysql://hostname:port/database_name)

If you run both your desktop PC and your notebook within the same
network you have to check the IP address (or hostname) of your system
you want to connect to

Checking the IP address of this system:
press the Windows button (start menu)
type cmd and open the command line
type ipconfig /ALL
note the IPv4 address because this is the address you have to add to the
hostname part of the datasource URL

You have to know the port address of the database and you have to know
the name (eg. accounting) of your database you want to connect to.

Maybe you need to install a database driver on your client system. This
driver has to be selected then.

An alternate variant can be the connection using a ODBC connection
This connection has to be configured within the ODBC settings dialog
(search for ODBC in Windows system settings). Once set up within your
Windows system the configuration within OpenOffice is quite similar.

Kind regards, Joost

Re: Difficulty to control printing of a Calc file

2020-04-30 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi VinceB,

use the menu item /View/Page Break Preview/

In this view you can easily drag the blue lines displayed on the page
where you want to, eg. if you want to scale the content to one page
printouts then drag the right line of the "Page 1" line to the outer
right side.

Using the right mouse button within this view you can define manual
column or row breaks at any positon you want.

Or mark the content you want to print and press the right mouse button
and select the context menu item "Define Print Range"

Afterwards you can leave this "Page Break Preview" by selecting menu
item /View/Normal/
All settings are persistent until you close the document. If you save
the document this setting is persistent if you close and reopen the
document.

In menu item /File/Page Preview/ you can use the slider to scale the
document to something you want to look it like.

If page margins do not fit then you can control these in menu item
/Format/Page/ on the tab page "Page". Within this dialog click into one
of the fields Left, Right, Top or Bottom. If you now press the PageDown
button on your keyboard then the dialog automatically selects the
minimum setting for this page margin the operating system configured
printer driver supports.

Re: Spreadsheet

2020-03-21 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi Gerry,

you can work wit cell templates. Therefor open the template dialog by
using function key F11 and create a new one by pressing the right mouse
button ontop of this dialog. Then select the "New" link. Hint: Assinging
a name to this template helps...

The function you want to use then is the water can button where you can
assign multiple cells with all that formating defined within the cell
template.

Otherwise (without using templates) you could also multi select all
those cells there you want to change the colour and then assign the
background colour at once.
In the icon bar you find a button for background color. Press it once
and then select the dialog title and drag it somewhere else (select the
title and hold down the right mouse button)

Using templates is a very powerful tool as it allows you to work with
inheritance of templates so a child template can inherit objects of it's
mother template. And cell templates can be exported to an other
document, so you can easily create a template library.

Based upon the usage of cell templates it's quite easy to use the
feature of conditional formatting (Format menu)

Kind regards, Joost

containing some data (including textual headers of the columns and rows,
like within the example below)

Apples Bananas
Monday 1,00 € 2,00 €
Tuesday 4,00 € 4,00 €
Wednesday 3,00 € 5,00 €
Thursday5,00 € 2,00 €
Friday 4,00 € 4,00 €
Saturday3,00 € 3,00 €

Then click the chart symbol within the symbol panel or select menu item
/Insert/Chart (in the German localization it's called Diagramm)

Within the chart dialog you can select the chart type, the data range
and you can define if you want to have the data visualized in rows or in
columns. You may also define a title, sub title, and the description of
the x or the y axis. After finishing the dialog by selecting the finish

When double clicking the embedded object you open this object within the

Re: How Do I Change Text in the Legend of a Chart?

2014-11-23 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi Fred,

you usually just need to change the title of the colums within the
source data set. If you create a chart within AOO then the chart is an
OLE (object linking and embedding) object. Such objects share a
connection to the source data within the document where you create the
chart. In Writer (the wordprocessor) the source data is usually stored
within a table and within Calc (the spreadsheet module) the source data
is part of this document where every element (cell) of this document can
be a source of a chart. I Calc to find out which table part is used as
source data then open that document and doubleclick the chart. In this
case source data for this chart is highlighted. In Writer unfortunately
it isn't. This would be a useful feature to implement...

Hi Andrea,

the retirement for CrashReporter on the Windows platform is somehow
understandable as the requirement to archive every Windows debug build

platforms (like on Linux) where the CrashReporter used the backtrace

AOO's "supporters" because users can provide a stack trace when they're

dictionary or spell checker become un-attached somehow? I tried to cure by
a re load of 3.4.1 but no luck. Thanks I am using windows

please check the installed spell checkers within the application (menu
item /tools/extension manager/) and if there are dupicates for our
language. If this is the case then uninstall those not needed within
that dialog.

If your language is not listed within the extension manager then have a
look at http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/dictionaries
I believe you'll find one to install for your language. There are
diverse spell checkers available. You just need to choose one of them
suitable for your language and install it by opening the oxt file.
Usually your operating system will pass this file to be opened with
OpenOffice.

Kind regards, Joost
