RE: reader problem

2016-01-09 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
What is the full file name of a file you want to open with Apache OpenOffice?
Are you trying to open ODF documents or Microsoft Office Documents? Is it some
other kind of document?

If you are attempting to open a Microsoft Office document (e.g., a .doc file)
on a Microsoft Windows computer, try this:

For the file you want Apache OpenOffice to open for you, find that file using
Windows Explorer, so you see it listed in a Windows Explorer list of files for
a folder.

Right click on the file entry and when a menu opens, choose "Open With" on that
list. You will see a list of candidates. If you do not see an OpenOffice
candidate (e.g., OpenOffice Writer), click "Choose Another App" (the exact
wording may vary depending on the version of Windows you are using). You may
have to ask to see more, and then still have to go look directly for the Apache
OpenOffice Writer program on your computer.

If you do not know how to find the program, ask on us...@openoffice.org, giving
more details please.

If you succeed, and the document opens correctly, Microsoft Windows will
remember your choice and add it to the list of candidates. You can then make
that the default by going through the procedure again and choosing that option.
Then you won't have to use the Open With any longer for files with that
extension (e.g., .doc) at the end of their names.

Your operating system is supposed to take care of that, not Apache
OpenOffice, so ask on a forum for your operating system. Seems to be some
flavour of Windows, so I can't answer it, otherwise I would.

However, when you ran Apache OpenOffice for the first time, I think you
should have been asked if you want Apache OpenOffice to be your default
program for your documents. That could have solved your problem, I guess.
Or maybe not.

What kinds of documents are you trying to open? Maybe Apache OpenOffice
just can't handle them? Suffixes like .ods, .odt, .doc, .xls and so on
should be no problems, but maybe you are trying to open other kinds of
documents?

It doesn’t. Word Pad does or any of the other two on the list. I simply
CANNOT ADD OPEN OFFICE TO THE LIST IN ORDER TO HAVE IT OPEN MY DOCUMENTS.
I have gone to the default area and that doesn’t make it open them either by
default.
I have worked for about 7 hours reading everything I can find on the computer.

Have you tried right-clicking on the file you want to open, then
choosing 'properties' at the bottom of the drop down menu, then
selecting "open with' and navigating to OO Write or appropriate program?

Might be worth a shot if not ... :)

I'm not a Windows user, so can't reply to the detail of your problem as it is
beyond my knowledge; however, as a short term solution, you should be able to
open any suitable document by starting OpenOffice (Programs button or desktop
shortcut?), then /File /Open and navigate to the folder where the desired
document lives, select it and press the Open button.

I am exhausted trying to fix a problem.
I downloaded and installed Open Office 4.1.2. I wanted it not just for word
processing but the major reason was to open my documents etc.
It doesn’t. Word Pad does or any of the other two on the list. I simply
