[users] how to use replace when you have hundreds of words?

2007-07-15 Thread Peter van Summeren
Hello,
I have a list of hundreds of words in the csv-format: word;replacement
I can not do that manually.
I would like to preserve the style/format of the words in the document +
replacing them automatically from the list.
Does anyone know how to do this?
with friendly greetings,
P_ter

I encountered the same problem when I tried to upgrade OO, the installation
was going to create a new directory. My solution is to always uninstall the
old one before upgrading to the newer version. I don't like it, so
sometimes I just keep using an stable version for a long time and ignore
those minor updates. For your problem, I think maybe you can try to
uninstall all the versions in your PC via control panel and delete all
left-overs by hand. Then make a clean installation of the latest version.
Since each version occupies a different directory, uninstalling one version
probably will not greatly disturb others versions, but it's my guess only.

Best regards.

Or right-click, select Properties, then 'Open With' and then select the
appropriate OOo program to open with. The problem with Ubuntu is that
unless you uninstall the Ubuntu OO version and the ubuntu-desktop the

Possibly.

The ability to start a program from the MIME type is a function of the
OS, not OO.o, or more correctly in Ubuntu, a function of Gnome itself. I
use IceWM so i cannot direct you to the exact place for setting up file
associations in Gnome.

I am using the official downloaded version of OpenOffice 2.2.0, working

The problem is that double-clicking on an .odt file does not open it,
not unless I put in the exact path to the program.

This is an annoyance, though I haven't felt sufficiently annoyed to
complain about it until now. It is a bit of a pain to have to either
open OpenOffice and track down the path to the document, or click on the

It was working the same in the previous versions of OpenOffice as well.

Is this a problem brought about by not using the Ubuntu build of
OpenOffice? I hesitate to go to the Ubuntu build because they always

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Dear Michael

I can understand your frustration with this failure after downloading
a 140 Mb file on a 56K modem...
Maybe it would be a better option to try and find a CD with
OpenOffice.org for your Mac. I know some computer magazines come with
a free CD that includes OOo, but most of the time it will be the
Windows (or maybe a Linux) version, not the one for the Mac. Maybe a
cybercafé or public library will offer you the possibility of a faster
download. You could burn the dmg file on a CD and install it on your
Mac at home.
Take a look at the install help at
• http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/faq/installing/X11.html (for the
X11 windowing program you'll need to use OOo on Mac -that is till the
native Aqua version will be ready later this year)
(The right version of X11User.pkg sits on your OS 10.4.x (Tiger)
installation disks)
* Once you have downloaded OpenOffice.org for the Mac (in your case
the PPC version, not the Intel one I suppose), you will have a disc
image, which you will need to open.
* Drag and drop the application inside the disc image into the
Applications folder (or anywhere else on your hard disk for that
matter).
* As the same user that completed the previous step, run
OpenOffice.org for the first time, you will be asked if you want to
use your Mac OS X fonts. If you do a conversion process will occur.
The time it takes depends on how many fonts you have installed, and
how fast your machine is. Your original fonts will be left untouched.

I think this is cosmetic rather than problematical. The
identification is just a text string, not anything functional. You
can see it in the Properties dialogue, but - as you say - not change it there.

If something changed the association on your system of .odt files to
Microsoft Word, then it will presumably have done this properly, as
it were, including changing this text identifier of the file
type. You say you changed the association back; if you did this the
obvious and easy way - through Open With > and then ticking the
"Always ..." box - you will have changed the association back to what
you want, but without correcting the identifier.

To change this in Windows XP, open Windows Explorer ("My Computer")
and go to Tools | Folder Options... | File Types. Scroll down to and
select the relevant extension, and then select Advanced. The file
type text string can be edited there.

I trust this helps.

I installed the Sun plugin on my work computer. While it now shows Word
as an association, OO still opens when I click on the file. It is
possible for a file to have multiple associations, though only one can
be default. What happens when you double click on an ODT file?

[users] Query re rank ordering data

2007-07-15 Thread Dr John Barrow
Hi

I am using Calc [ OpenOffice.org (v2.0.2) ] running under W2k.

I wish to rank order some data (which is basically easy I know using
the function RANK) but my problem introduces a twist to this and I
can't find how to solve it.

In a Calc spreadsheet, I am recording ticket sales data from a number
of shows and want to rank order the sales figures as the days pass in
order of (a) number of tickets sold, and (b) sales revenue. The data
is entered into the spreadsheet daily and is automatically totalled to
give 'close of business' totals. It is the totals which I wish to
rank.

For example ...

At close of business on day 1 suppose the total figs are ...
Showname Sales Showname Revenue
Show 1 5 Show 1 40
Show 2 8 Show 2 80
Show 310 Show 3100

That's easy, they're all in the correct order anyway and line
themselves without any intervention from me.

But, suppose on day 2 these have changed to ...
Showname Sales Showname Revenue
Show 112 Show 1 96
Show 2 8 Show 2 80
Show 310 Show 3100

I want to rank order the data as follows ...
Showname Sales Showname Revenue
Show 2 8 Show 2 80
Show 310 Show 1 96
Show 112 Show 3100

What I want is for the daily changes in the total figures to make the
rank ordering change automatically and keep the correct showname at
the same time.

On the numerical data I can use the function SMALL to do the numerical
part of the task on each column (Sales, Revenue). But, as I say, I
need the shownames to accompany any moves in the rankings otherwise
it's a dog's breakfast. That is my problem. I need to find a way of
linking the alphabetical entries in the Showname columns to the
corresponding data in Sales and Revenue so that all move 'in step'.

Can anyone give me any pointers?

Cheers

jb

[users] spurious words for autocompletion

2007-07-15 Thread Kenn Goutal

I keep having things added to my autocompletion list in any given document,
that shouldn't be there.
For example, in one document, I type:
sur
and it autocompletes as
surveysSurvey
I can see that at some point I must have (erroneously) typed that into the
document.
But how do I get rid of it?

I've looked under Tools->Options->Language Settings->Writing Aids,
and under Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org Writer Formatting Aids,
but haven't found the answer there.

The Help text for AutoComplete seemed to refer only to autocompletion is
dialogs.

You have probably discovered - as I just have - that if you enter
Ctrl+Space into the "Replace with" box of the Find & Replace dialogue
box, you get an ordinary space, not a non-breaking one. So that's
the problem. But by experimentation, I find that if I enter a
non-breaking space somewhere in the document itself and then
copy-and-paste it into the "Replace with" box, everything works as
you would expect. If you do this, you can do a simple find and
replace to achieve what you need.

I trust this helps.

Sorry, [EMAIL PROTECTED], this does not help:

Let me repeat my question in other words:

How to substitute all ordinary blanks by non-breaking ones via the "find
+ replace" dialog?

Does someone know how this is accomplished?
===

Two reasons why I think you got me wrong:

1. u+0020 is an ordinary blank, not the non-breaking one
2. how to get a special character to the substitution field in
substitution dialog?

Not sure how it could be clearer unless you are using a different web
site from the one I'd expect you to use.

1. Go to www.openoffice.org
2. Click the big green "Get OpenOffice.org version 2.2.1" button
3. Click the big green "Download OpenOffice.org" button
4. Choose your Operating System - I presume Windows.
5. Wait till the file is downloaded to the folder *you* choose (desktop,
perhaps)

6. Run the downloaded file

On the other hand, there is no "UK version". You can install a UK
English dictionary so that your documents will be spell checked in that
language but the default GUI is in US English. Even I, a renowned
pedant, don't care about that. There are "language packs" that make the
GUI appear in French, Spanish and other languages but there isn't one
for UK English. You can also download several different dictionaries to
have different documents checked in different languages or different
paragraphs/sentences/words within a document checked in different
languages. See the Help about dictionaries and/or browse the
documentation pages at http://documentation.openoffice.org/

If you have a slow and/or pay-by-the-minute internet connnection you may
prefer to buy the software on CD. There's a list of vendors linked from
the download page under "Order Openoffice.org on CD". Expect to pay not
more than USD/GBP10 for the CD plus P&P. Please note that we make no
recommendations, nor do we provide any guarantees about any of the
vendors; caveat emptor.

Alternatively computer magazines often carry OpenOffice on their free
CDs/DVDs; just make sure (a) it's the lates version of OpenOffice and
(b) it's the version for your OS - the Windows version won't run on
Linux and so on.

If you want to type in the information but have the line there, try
this, replace the line with your text and use the underline button
on the text that you replaced the line with in the document.

a) Install the appropriate dictionaries, thesauri, and
hyphenation dictionaries.
">File >Wizards >Install new dictionaries" should bring up
the tool for installing dictionaries.
* This tool will automatically check to see if it is the
most current version. If it is not, then it will ask if you
want to update to the current version.
* The user interface for version 1.7 is in 27 languages;
* It lists roughly 120 dictionaries for spell checking;
** There are some ---probably less than a dozen ---
dictionaries for OOo that are not listed in this tool. For
the most part, the unlisted dictionaries are very new, very
specialized, or very large.
* Only install dictionaries etc that you use, and need.
OOo performance can be severely degraded if too many
dictionaries, etc are installed. [My experience is that
performance degradation is noticeable at around 5
dictionaries, and is complete at around 100 dictionaries.
The amount of RAM, and your chip speed will affect the
performance degradation.]

b) Create and use language specific styles;
* For each language that is used, create a set of paragraph,
character, numbering, and page styles. Use those styles when
creating, or editing documents. This way spell checking will
be correctly done. Language specific styles also allow for
transparent grammar checking from within OOo.
* A template that contains the start of language specific
styles can be found at
http://www.esnips.com/web/OOoRelatedThings.
* Uncheck "Spell check in all languages" unless you want
your work to contain spelling errors.

Obsolete stuff:

* DictInstall is obsolete, and works only on Windows. It can
be obtained from http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/dictinstall/

Please do *not* start a new question by replying to an old one as this causes
several problems:
1) most email software will correctly think that your email is a response to
the email you are "replying" to, and will indicate this by displaying your
email as a child of the original email
2) because of this, people not interested in the original email may ignore
your question
3) people may think that the original email has a reply(yours) so that they do
not have to give it a reply
So in conclusion, more people will read your email if it looks like the start
of a new thread rather than the reply to an old one.

[users] How declare a text to be of a certain language?

2007-07-15 Thread Rolf Schumacher
In MSWord I can select a text and declare the language it is written in.
The spellchecker is recognizing my declaration. How to perform this in
OOWriter?

The story:

In a document that was maintained with MSWord, yet,
It seems that a wild intermix of English(UK), English(USA)
German(Ger..), German(Lux..),was assigned to different paragraphs, even
single words.

Now I'm editing this document with Writer and wonder how I can select
English(UK) as the spellchecking language for all the text.

Here is some config information:

"Tools/Options/Language Settings/Languange/Language of Local setting" is
set to "English(UK)"
"Tools/Options/Language Settings/Languange/Default languages for
documents Western" is set to "English(UK)"
"Tools/Options/Language Settings/Writing Aids/OpenOffice.org HuntSpell
SpellChecker is selected.
"Edit ..." is set to "English(UK)"
"Options" shows a checkmark at "Check spelling as you type"

However, if I right-click a misspelled word I always get German corrections.

[users] Unexpected error

2007-07-15 Thread Jean Montémont

Hi,

I'm using version 2.2.1 of OpenOffice and I have this problem : when I
want to edit a macro created with openoffice basic, a message appears
and tells me that an unexpected error has occurred and OOo closes. I've
tried to uninstall OOo and to install it again, and even to install the
2.2.0 version, but the problem still persists.

Are you aware of a possible incompatibility with Windows XP or another
component ?

Thanks for your answer.

The MakeProperty function is not part of OOo (at least I do not think that
it is included). One definition for it is as follows:

Function MakeProperty( Optional cName As String, Optional uValue ) As
com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue
   Dim oPropertyValue As New com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue
If Not IsMissing( cName ) Then
  oPropertyValue.Name = cName
   EndIf
If Not IsMissing( uValue ) Then
  oPropertyValue.Value = uValue
   EndIf
   MakePropertyValue() = oPropertyValue
End Function

First, it creates an object (well, a struct) of type PropertyValue. A
property value contains a name and an object of type variant (so it can
contain anything. If the name and/or value is included, then it is
included in the property. This is a fast way of creating a property value
and adding it to an array.

This is a time saving routine because it is easier to declare an array and
then use this to create property values than to create a properly
dimenstioned array of property values and fill them in.

[users] come fare

2007-07-15 Thread pv

Salve,

Paolo

I understand your frustration, because you have set nearly everything correctly
to achieve what you desire. However, for the last option you mention: "Options"
shows a checkmark for "Check spelling as you type" you must click on the
scrollbar (right side of the box) and continue down the list to "Check in all
languages" and "German spelling - old" and make sure that there is no checkmark
in either of those last two boxes.

  This should help.

Just guessing: did you install the X11 SDK or the X11user? It should
be the X11user.pkg?
Does the OS still say X11 isn't installed? Can you find X11 in your

The easiest way is to go to www.openoffice.org and click on "get
openoffice.org", then "Download OpenOffice.org. Select the Windows
version and continue from there. Pay attention to what folder is it
being saved to. After the download is completed, go to that folder and

You can use different headers and footers on different pages in your
document, so long as the pages use different page styles. OpenOffice.org
provides several predefined page styles, such as First page, Left page
and Right page, or you can create a custom page style.
You can also use the mirrored page layout if you want to add a header to
a page style that has different inner and outer page margins. To apply
this option to a page style, choose Format - Page, click the Page tab,
and in the Layout settings area, choose Mirrored in the Page layout box.
For example, you can use page styles to define different headers for
even and odd pages in a document.
1.Open a new text document.
2.Choose Format - Styles and Formatting and click the Page Styles icon
in the Styles and Formatting window.
3.Right-click "Right Page" in the list of page styles and choose Modify.
4.In the Page Styles dialog, click the Header tab.
5.Select Header on and click the Organizer tab.
6.In the Next Style box, select "Left Page".
7.Click OK.
8.In the Styles and Formatting window, right-click "Left Page" in the
list of page styles and choose Modify.
9.In the Page Styles dialog, click the Header tab.
10.Select Header on and click the Organizer tab.
11.In the Next Style box, select "Right Page".
12.Click OK.
13.Double-click "Right Page" in the list of page styles to apply the
style to the current page.
14.Enter text or graphics in the header for the Left Page style. After
the next page is added to your document, enter text or graphics in the
header for the Right Page style.

Problem: I'm trying to create a 4 page document with a header on all the
pages except the first one. I've tried to use "section" to absolutely no
avail. I've tried creating a section on the first page, the last three pages
and on both the first page and the last three pages. Each time I create a
header on one of the last three pages (generally page 2) it creates a header
on the first page. This, then, surely defeats the whole object of having
"sections" in place :(
