Did you turn on the portable or just open it up from
sleep/hibernate mode? Sometimes the system hiccups
when waking up from sleep/hibernate modes. Mostly the
laptops wake up and say its IP address starts with
169. instead 192., but other time program access is
stalled/stopped until I restart.

Sometimes Windows does that. You have to restart to get
the program running properly. It happens more with me on
the Vista, but it has happened with XP as well.

I use XP/pro on an AMD64 Athlon 2 gig processor laptop
and a Vista Home Premium on a Pentium Dual-Core 2 gig laptop.
Plus a Win2000/pro server and a XP/home desktop.
OOo 3.1 works well with all four computers and OS's.
Sometimes Rebooting is just needed. I found MS's OS
need to be freshly rebooted every 5 to 9 days or there
can have errors crop up in operations. That is one
reason most Businesses I know reboot their MS OS based
servers once a week. I did that to a server farm every
Sunday night/Monday morning.

Do not worry about anti-windows messages. I am retired
due to 3 strokes, but I still have to support some businesses,
plus friends, family, and others that want to see a windows
computer using the software instead of saying it works on
windows, but I use Linux and you are fullish to still use
your windows OS. Next computer purchase, see if you have
time to upgrade to a Linux distro. Ubuntu is not the
only good distro out there, acourding to the Linux people
I know. But that is another Battle of words as well.

Tim L.
retire and tired of my OS is better than yours.
Whatever works for you is the best OS for you now.

Any suggestions regarding the interruption to work when auto-saving in
  the background?

My guess is that it's not possible. I think the program needs to
freeze the current content while saving in order to get a consistent
save. What one might really wish for is a faster save so that the
interruption is briefer. Maybe the developers could find ways to move
in that direction, but I don't think zero delay is possible.

Hello Lene,

Just to be sure:
If you are using OpenOffice.org and have a file open in Calc then follow
these directions:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4449830_import-excel-files-quickbooks.html

The only difference from the web pages instructions for OO.o would be
that in step 1 you choose:

Save As
Then you ensure that the file type you save the file as is
Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls)

Are you saying that if you do this your install of QuickBooks does not
recognize the data, this would mean that Step 6 (or 7) per the web page
I suppose.

Anyway - I don't have QBooks on my local machine any longer - though my
accountant does and the last 2 years I delivered Excel files to them
created with OpenOffice.org..they got my taxes done somehow - I just
assumed they pull them into their copy of QB.

Will updating to the latest version solve the problem?

Staying current is always a good thing, isn't it,

You are doing two separate things which will require two separate sets
of steps to accomplish.

I'm doing this on OOo 3.0.1 on a Mac, by the way. Shouldn't be much
different on another system, if at all.

REMOVE FOOTER FROM FIRST PAGE:
1) Make sure the cursor is somewhere on the first page.
2) Click Format, then click Styles and Formatting (or press F11).
3) In the Styles and Formatting box, click the Page Styles button
(fourth from the left, at the top of the windows).
4) In the list of styles, select First Page. I applied it by
double-clicking it.

5) Close the Styles and Formatting box.

YOUR CUSTOMIZED FOOTER:
1) Click Insert, click Footer, click Default.
2) Go to page 2 or 3 of your document and click in the footer to place
the cursor there.

3) Type an asterisk (*)
4) Click Insert then Fields, then Other...
5) Click Document if it is not already selected.
6) Click Page in the Type column.
7) Click Previous Page in the Select column.
8) Click the Insert button.
9) Click the Close button.
10) Type Page of .
11) Click Insert.
12) Click Fields.
13) Click Page Count.
14) Type another asterisk (*).

That should give you the format you asked for on the final 2 pages, with
no footer showing on the first page.

Hope this helps!

it at the place I last worked on - i.e. the end of the document?

OOo Writer tries to be smart here: if the document is opened by its
author, the editing cursor and view are restored and you start out back
where you last saved the document. If the document is opened by someone
other than the author, it starts at the beginning.

Great idea--in principle--but it's broken all too easily since the only
way that OOo can determine whether the person opening the document is
the author is to look at the name recorded under Tools Options
OO.org User Data, which can easily be incorrect or inconsistent across
multiple systems or even across software upgrades.

If you maintain the name in the user data consistently, then OOo will
start your documents at the last saved position.

For manual control, you can easily reach the end of the document with
Ctrl+End, or the last editing position with Shift+F5.

...
How do I set it up so that OOo Writer can do a background save that does
not interrupt my work whilst it is saving and that the saving process
doesn't return me to the page where the cursor is even when that page
does not have focus - i.e. is not the page I am looking at at the time
of the background save?
...

It's not possible as far as I know.

The simplest workaround is to either scroll using methods that also move
the editing cursor: PgUp/Dn, Ctrl+Up/Down, and headings in the Navigator
are the only ones I can think of; or to develop a habit of always moving
the cursor to the area where you're working.

There is a request to fix the view jumping on autosave:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=81697
and the issue is getting some attention, but there also seems to be some
confusion over the exact state of the problem at this point.

What bugs me is that this nasty autosave hiccup still happens, even when
the document has not changed since the last manual save.
