If I have understand you right, it's quite easy. Add a header to the
document (Insert -> Header -> Default).

Inside the header add a frame. Move the frame the way that you like. Put
whatever you like inside the frame.

Usually when you want to change the "normal" flow of the text in a
document, you use frames.

I have made a quick example, you can check it here:

Hope that it helps.

The problem is not how to make the assignment. Let me explain further.

I am writing this on an Ubuntu computer on which I have OOo installed.
In OOo Ctrl-Shift-u is *unassigned*. However, if I type Ctrl-Shift-u in
OOo I get the option to enter a Unicode hex value, which will then
place the character for that value in the document. My point is that
Ctrl-Shift-u is a feature of the operating system. It works in all
programs. It does not need to be assigned in OOo.

For some reason OOo on the user's computer is blocking this feature of
the operating system. It does not block it on my computer, or on any
other Linux computer that I have ever worked with. I can't figure out
why OOo is blocking Ctrl-Shift-u on the user's computer.

Initially I thought that perhaps someone had assigned Ctrl-Shift-u to
some other function in her OOo. But she checked and it is unassigned.
And the feature is working as it is supposed to in Ubuntu, because she
can use it in all other programs.

There must be a setting somewhere to block this feature, but I can't
find it.

"We'll take care of that in a minute in case you want your letterhead stretched

The instructions never produced anything close to what I need. I asked 5 or so

May I ask specifically what "vulnerabilities" you are referring to? I
am genuinely interested and would like to follow up on them for my own
edification. I've found myself with misplaced loyalties before, so ...
.

I don't know the answer to your question and am not in a position to
know the answer but there are some vagueries in your query that bear
either confirmation or clarification.

-- I wasn't aware that Office97 provided any protection method that
wasn't also a part of the windows operating system. Windows has come a
long, long ways since the days of Office 97 and whatever version of
windows it happened to run on starting with windows 3.1 IIRC all the way
up to at least XP and possibly Vista with compatability modes.

RC4, or ARC4 is definitely NOT a fully validated, strong security method
of encryption. In some cases, it is not much more secure than say ROT13
is. RC4 is used for things like Secure Socket Layer, the SSL used on
web sites and so on.
It's also non-random, so for instance, although this is a slight
exaggeration, discovering which codes might be vowels is relatively
easy. Once you've found and verfieid a letter or two, the
non-randomness means the rest of the patterns become quickly clear.
Obviously it's not quite that simple, but in comparison to XP's
capability or Blowfish, it's almost a trivial encryption method.

-- XP's encryption algos are actually pretty tight, though AFAIK still
at 128 bits, not 256 as some are. I have heard 256 might show up in
win7 and I don't know if it did in Vista or not.
That said however, EFS (XP encryption) is extremely secure and
reliable. Without posession of the cert keys in fact, simply
reformatting a hard drive will make the data unavailable to anyone until
the original keys it was encrypted under are provided to it. Your
account password is a lot more likely to be compromised than the
encrypted data in fact and becomes the weak link in on-machine theft
because the data is unencrypted as it's moved almost anywhere.
In their infinite wisdom, MS botched providing sufficient collateral
information in the right places for EFS key/cert protection, and thus
some people believe it loses data on them, but it does not. Its
reliability is stellar, and especially more so when coupled with a
properly entrenched and competent backup strategy. But if you didn't
export and keep those keys, it's highly unlikely the data will ever be
restored again. Period. All in all, it's very good protection as long
as it's also covered with a very strong password.

Open Office, IIRC, uses Blowfish algorithms, does it not? 128 bit, I
think. Those aren't too shabby at all, actually. Between OOo's algos
and adding XP's algos to that, would remove easy access to the raw data
in XP, but it should create a pretty darned strong protection. There
are also some decent 3rd party apps for encryption, but they all have
their cons, especially in that you can simply copy an encrypted file to
another drive or machine anywhere and unencrypt it with just a password.

Anyway ... your post caught my eye and I'm interested in why you think
the way you do. I'm quite interested in hearing back from you as other
may be also.

What operating system are you using? Where did you get the
openoffice.org download file, and what is the version? The installation
steps are first to download the appropriate file from
www.openoffice.org, then to double-click the downloaded file, then to
follow the instructions in the installation dialog. After that, you
should have an icon on your desktop (and in your Start menu, for
Windows) that provides access to the OpenOffice.org applications,
including Writer (the text document -- AKA word processing --
component). What exactly happened that you are seeing as "appeared to
install"? How did you close OpenOffice.org if you never opened it? If
you opened it, what exactly did you see? Did you install a version that
added the Quickstarter to your task bar? If so, what happens when you
right click on that?

By the way, we are not a formal support organization, just other users
of OOo who volunteer some time here to help each other.

I am not an expert but I can assure you there is a word processor in the
OOo package. It is called Writer.

After downloading and then running the installer to install OOo, click
on Start; Programs. In that list you should see and Open Office
+version entry and in that, you should see the 7 basic components of
Open Office such as Base, Calc, Draw, Impress, Writer and so on.
Clicking on Writer should start the word processor.

I do not know why you would get any messages as you indicate. Please
list your Operating Sysem, its version and Service Pack level, plus the
verstion of Open Office you are trying to get installed.

Where did you download the installer files from? Was it from
openorffice.org or some other URL?

I do not understand what you mean by running "setup". There is no
"setup.exe" you have to run if you downloaded it from Openoffice.org.
The file you downloaded should be named
OOo_3.1.0_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe
or something similar if you chose a different, older version.

That is the file you run to install Open Office.

As for Uninstalling, you should be able to do that from Control Panel's
Add or Remove icon as you would with any other program.

IS the above how you installed and then tried to remove OpenOfice on
your computer?

If it is, I don't know what's wrong, but it should have worked.
If it is not, then there may be some other sort of problem.
Either way, by answering the questions here, someone should be able
to assist you and begin to straighten out your problem or problems.

Please quote any error messages you might see, and explain what you did
to cause the error message to appear. They can be very important.

HTH & looking forward to your answers,

[users] Null Character being written in incorrect location in lock file

2009-08-11 Thread Scott
Hi guys, I was wondering if you could help me with a somewhat unique problem
I'm having or if you could direct me to someone or somewhere I could get the
help I require. My apologies in advance if this is not the correct mailing
list but I wasn't sure how to classify it.

First up, I must state that this problem does not seem to occur in general
usage of OpenOffice.org 3.x and therefore it may not be a bug with OOo and
could be a bug in my own code. Allow me to explain:

I am developing a file system that interfaces with Google Docs using FUSE (
http://code.google.com/p/google-docs-fs/). The issue I have is documented at
http://code.google.com/p/google-docs-fs/issues/detail?id=6 and I shall
summarise it here.
The file system stores all files locally by storing them in
~/.google-docs-fs with a directory tree generated with the above directory
as its root. When the file is closed, the release() function is called which
uploads the file to the Google Docs server.
To prevent the lock files being uploaded, I create an exception for files
beginning with . which causes them to be stored and read locally only.
The problem is that now, after OOo creates a lock file, it then reopens the
file and overwrites the last character ';' with the Null character '\x00'.

I've been trying to figure out the source of the problem by myself to no
avail so any help would be hugely appreciated. As I say, I'm not sure
whether the problem is with my code or with some strange behaviour occurring
within OOo that doesn't surface under normal conditions.
Thanks for your time

Scott Walton

If you password protect a OOo file in its native format, the encryption is
provided by 128 bit Blowfish algorithm.

Personally I wouldn't trust MS's implementation of any algorithm and would
always save important documents in OOo native format.

That issue occurred (here: WinXP-SP3) sporadically with the font DejaVu Sans
(Heading and Outline Numbering).

My first 'workaround':
The display of the affected text has been repaired by closing (Ctrl+W)
and reopening (PickList) the document. [... troublesome ...] ;-)

My 'solution' (?):
- To install the current version 2.29 of DejaVu. [1]
- To create a template with DejaVu Serif and DejaVu Sans as Default /
"Basic Fonts (Western)" [Tools > Options > OO.o Writer > Basic Fonts
(Western)]

It seems that the issue has been resolved (for me).

Component = QA
Sub componenet = www

At least that is where I would put it.

I agree with you and will look forward to seeing the issue - it would be
nicer IMO to have the list sorted by most current tags to earliest
release tags.

No idea, but all look just fine for me on (linux):

- Okular
Version 0.8.2
Using KDE 4.2.2 (KDE 4.2.2)

- Evince
Document Viewer 2.26.1

- Adobe Reader
Version 9.1.1.1

- KGhostView 0.20

- Xpdf... etc., etc.

I have also viewed the .pdf file with Preview [3.0.9] and Acrobat
Reader [8.1.6] on Mac OSX [10.4.11] and it displays normally. There
are no aspect ratio or other anomalies.

I also opened it in Acrobat Professional [8.1.6]. Nothing appears unusual.
I looked at both the page numbered 34 as well as the 34th page of the
.pdf [p.24] and neither are distorted in any way.

I vote for the error being in your viewer.

Sorry, I did not even think about that. In any case the server
announces the content-length when it serves the file so the user could
choose if that is too big for him.

I see almost _all_ the pages being shown as different sizes. A
particularly bad case is page 34, which does not even have the right
aspect ratio.

Note that this may be an error in Okular (KDe PDF viewer), not in OOo.

You might have warned the list that the pdf is 12.7MB & consists of 100
pages... Which particular pages are you having problems with, or do you
want folks to go through all 100 pages & guess?

Thank you, John. I am using Okular in KDE 4.3. I will test in other
PDF readers and research the Okular situation. Thanks.

I don't know what computer or OS you are using, but on my Mac OS 10.5, the
document has consistent page sizes in Preview and in Adobe Reader. Thus, I
have to conclude the document is OK, but the application reading the
document is not.

Often I find that PDF files created in Writer do not have consistent
page sizes or dimensions. See in particular this file:
http://www.lsemuse.co.uk/sites/default/files/the-muse-2009.pdf

Is there a way to force consistent page sizes? Thanks.
