[users] Howto use set reference/insert reference to retrieve paragraph number?

2010-08-06 Thread Larry Evans

I've got some numbered paragraphs:

  1. Paragraph1.

 Sentence1.

 Sentence2.

  2. Paragraph2.

 Sentence1.
 Sentence2.

 Sentence3.

manual-page-break

  3. Paragraph3.

 Sentence1.

 Sentence2. See paragraph numbered ref-to-number-of-Paragraph2.

I've tried selecting the 2. of Paragraph 2; however, that highlights
*all* the numbers of the paragraphs. I went ahead and tried inserting

a cross-reference:Set Reference: with Name=second_para then, after
that, tried replacing the ref-to-number-of-Paragraph2 by inserting a
cross-reference:Insert Reference with Name=second_para; however, no
number 2 appeared. Only a small shaded blank appeared.

How do I get the number 2 to appear where I inserted the Insert Reference?

TIA.

Larry,

Not much to go on but have you checked View Field Names?

If you can send me a copy of your file direct and I will see what I can

Thanks Andy; however, I had this problem before:

  http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=usersmsgNo=186570

I'd forgotten about that, but apparently the solution is to upgrade.
However, as shown in the rest of that thread, I had problems doing that.
Looking at my download/OpenOffice directory, I see:

  OOo_3.2.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar

the contents of which include:

OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/
OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/readmes/
OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/readmes/README_en-US.html
OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/readmes/README_en-US
OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/DEBS/
OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/DEBS/openoffice.org3-calc_3.2.0-12_amd64.deb
OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483/DEBS/ooobasis3.2-writer_3.2.0-12_amd64.deb

There's also the directory:

 OOO320_m12_native_packed-1_en-US.9483

indicating I did tar xf the .tar file. The work.log I created in the
same directory indicated I tried using update in the
*/US9483/ directory; however, the output from that
indicated the upgrade was incomplete. At that point
I must have given up. That was back in 2010-03-30.

I may try again, but maybe not :(

Thanks. On Win7 (I have Win7 Home Premium) 3.2.1 does show
OpenOffice.org when opened to the start menu screen. It also shows the
document file name when a document is opened. However, it seems that the
title bar is a translucent type of background design, so the information
is a little hard to see. Also, if I un-maximize the window move the
smaller window around, I can see that it's a transparent title bar can
see the desktop background through it.

Could be that on yours is actually there, but is so transparent that
it's being obscured. Do you get the Minimize, Maximize/Restore, Close
buttons in the right hand corner?

Checking Tools|Options|OpenOffice.org|View I see the theme type is
'Automatic (Galaxy (default)); changing to Crystal, etc., doesn't seem
to affect the title bar appearance. Perhaps someone with Win7 experience
can assist; I use linux typically only open Win7 for testing support.

Just figured out that the title bar is following the Win7 desktop theme.
If I change the theme to Windows 7 Basic, the title bar is no longer
translucent looks the same as on WinXP. You might want to test on your
system as well.

I tried again, with:

http://download.services.openoffice.org/files/stable/3.2.1/OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

After unzipping and untarring, then follwed directions posted here:

http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=usersmsgNo=186815

The first time, the output showed conflicts; so, I used synaptic to
remove all existing openoffice installs and tried:

  sudo dpkg -i *.deb desktop-integration/*.deb

within:

~/download/OpenOffice/3.2.1/OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502/DEBS

After that, the Applications:Office menu had several OpenOffice.org
entries, e.g.:

  OpenOffice.org
  OpenOffice.org 3.2 Base
  OpenOffice.org 3.2 Calc
  ...

but no writer.

How can I get writer? Also, clicking on the 1st menu item:

  OpenOffice.org

results in an error dialog:

  Could not launch menu item

  Failed to execute child process
  oofromtemplate(No such file or directory)

How can I correct that?

Synaptic showed the location of the OpenOffice.org 3 files; so, I
looked at several of those and found /usr/bin/soffice (symlinked to

Tried:

Were you drunk when you wrote this email? This is the worst email i have ever

above all people need to know that when people get frustrated they can get
angry. When you can recognise that in yourself, then you can avoid this type
of stupidity. Further as a self styled Linux Guru you should know that you
ask one question per thread. I am not ever likely to use you as a consultant

I am however prepared to answer your questions.

Even MS Office (with limited capacities) is better working in WINE.

Problem 1: OOo under Linux enforce every time page format A4 with 2,5cm

OO.o does not use a normal.dot file as Microsoft Word does. It does not allow
it's default page layout to be updated by every whim of every user. Word
allows you to do this, then saves it back to normal.dot by default. Note that
is normal.dot - with the DOT meaning document template. How crappy is that?
OO.o works in a controlled way and allows you to save any layout as a
template and then choose which template you wish to use. Further it lets you
set any template you wish as the default template.

Problem 2: If I insert a TABLE, it enforce the WHOLE page width and can
 not changed.

How to tell Owriter not to use the whole page width?

If you go into the table properties and select other than Automatic for
the Alignment you immediately have the control you wish. I'll leave you to
find this setting as you are a knowledgable consultant, aren't you.

Problem 3: Is one of the worsest bugs!

I have a PAGE A3 LANDSCAPE with borders of 0cm (my Rotaprint

Thank you for those who offered suggestions to help.
The problem has now been fixed by a member of my
Computer Club who is a computer technician by trade.
He did an uninstall of Open Office and after that went
to hidden files and cleaned out something there that
had been left after the uninstall. He said that
this is something that Registry Cleaners do not get to.
I am not into technical things. As I did not write down
details of the steps taken cannot say what was really
done. After a reinstall of Open Office it is functioning
as it should be. There had been others at the Club
who had tried uninstall and Registry Cleans, and reinstall
which did not fix this problem before this.
Thank you again to those of the Users Group who
offered help.
