[users] VERY slow saving over network in OOo

2011-01-10 Thread Richard
Have posted this on a OOo forum as well as here, if the same I apologise
in advance but really need to solve this.

Have used OOo for some 7 years, changed my file server to Win7 Pro, now
the saving of my reports takes forever and is completely unacceptable.
My reports, when photos have been added can be 8 meg or so, but should
not be the issue as the beginning of the report is simply text and still
takes 10 to 20 seconds to save.

Had this problem several years ago (XP pro file server) and cant
remember exactly what I did to solve it. Have no issues with other large
files over the network like large pictures for example and obviously
have all the sharing set up correctly on the File Server.

I recall a setting in OOo where a local save was made in auto save and
then transferred to the file server? cant see this setting now though,
have the latest OOo on my system, I also recall some memory settings,
not the ones we see now, but others in respect of this saving and settings?

Frankly I don’t hold out much hope as I see this issue going way back
without a solution, but if any ones else has experienced this and has a
solution, I would be grateful, as it is driving me insane.

Joe,

I would suggest getting the Document Project's guide from
http://www.oooauthors.org/english/userguide3/writer3/V3_3_revisions .
Scroll down to Chapter 13, select the PDF and/or ODT verion.

The process outlined is the same process that is used to produce the

[users] MASTER DOCUMENTS

2011-01-10 Thread JOE Conner
What an interesting life I live. I decided to create a master document
for the first time, and that was a total exercise in frustration.

So, I began with the help file:

   To Create a Master Document

  1.

 Do one of the following:

  2.

If you are creating a new master document, the first entry in the
Navigator should be a *Text* entry. Type an introduction or enter
some text. This ensures that after having edited an existing style
in the master document, you see the changed style when viewing the
 subdocuments.

  3.

In the *Navigator* for master documents (should open
automatically, else press F5 to open), click and hold the *Insert*
icon, and do one of the following:

  4.

 Choose *File - Save*.

Step one says do one of the following. So far, so good. I go to step
two. I open a text file and type some text. No navigator appears, so
per step 3 I press F5 (suggested in step 3, but since step 2 fails to
work I am now doing things in step 3). Guess what - there is no
INSERTicon to press and hold. So step 3 also fails.
Now since step 1 says do ONE of the following, perhaps step 4 will
work. It does, sort of, but that is no different than saving any other
text document. So, I think step 4 also fails.

So, following the help steps to create a master document is a total
failure. Can some please tell me HOW to create a master document?

Go back to the OO.o site and be sure you download the English language

Re: [users] Lock formulas from being changed in Calc?

2011-01-10 Thread Bruce_Martin
All cells in a sheet are, by default left ready to be protected when the
sheet as a whole is protected.

1) Select the cells to be left unprotected.
2) Go "format cells"
3) Select the "Cell protection" tab.
4) To make the cells editable after the rest is protected, Uncheck the
box "protected"
5) If you are going to sell your work in creating the spreadsheet, you
may want to keep your formulas from being copied. For the cells in which
there formulas exist, leave those cells protected, and check the "Hide
Formula" box.

6) You can also choose to hide certain cells from printing,
independently from whether they are visible on screen.

7) You must then select the sheet(s) to be protected, then go "Tools"
and protect the sheets as a whole. This will require you to create a
password. If you are doing this many times, I suggest you keep a record
of the passwords in a password protected Calc workbook stored on a USB
memory stick, so that most of the time the file is physically
disconnected from your system or the internet.

8)Copyright/intellectual properties laws vary from country to
country. Therefore if you are selling your work, you will want to have a
contract from your clients first, which explicitly states in detail what
you are licensing to the client and what you are not.

A dispute could result if the client was expecting to have access to the
formulas and had not signed a contract to the contrary. Often a client
will tacitly (unspoken) have such expectations.

If you are in the U.S.A., it is possible that your work could also be
subject to export control laws of the U.S. Government, and before
exporting, you should contact them to be sure you are legal.

Yes. The last version is from April 2010, but I have opened and edited

Thanks for checking. I'll try to play around some more to make sure
that the problem isn't the meatsack at the keyboard (me, in this
case).

Did you actually /close/ the file, or just save it?

A quick experiment (ubuntu/3.2.0) suggests versions are saved when the
file is actually closed (in my case, by exiting OOo and selecting to
save changes). A plain 'save' followed by further editing didn't create
a new version - but that is, after all, what is stated on the option's
