No there is not, at this time, a Windows 64 bit version.  Make sure that
they load the 32 bit Java version as well.

Will that cause issues with 64 bit apps that also use Java?

Also, why so tardy with the 64 bit version?  64 bit CPUs have been around
for years (I got my 1st 5 years ago) and 64 bit Windows is now the norm.

Not quite sure if 64bit Windows is the norm yet.

It should be the future but there does need to be more 64 bit window
applications available.
Maybe the developers of other applications still see the huge number
of 32-bit machines as too large a carrot.

I'd choose a 64bit application if given the choice though.

Re: [users] open clipart library

2009-03-10 Thread Cameron Smith
I have to say I thought the first link I gave was quite explicit. It
seems to give rather detailed instructions.

What do you mean I have *it* downloaded ...? What is it. I don't
think there is an it in this context.

As to Scribus, perhaps you should ask in its support forums/lists/...

To Harold Fuchs: What I meant was a product calledOpen Clip Art
Library, which I was under the impression was the major clipart library
for OpenOffice, but I am probably wrong there, also! :-[

 --
 Old Sarge-John Boyle

Well after you download the open clipart library.

Extract the download
Load Open Office
Go Tools Gallery
Choose New Theme...
Name the Theme
Then in the Files Tab Browse for the Files
 Add and Then Add All

Which is pretty much what

 http://www.wikihow.com/Add-Clipart-to-OpenOffice.org

tells you to do. You may want to create new themes for each category
as it's a bit of a jumble arranged alphabetically in on location.
which is what I've just done.

I'm not sure about the exact procedure for adding to Scribus though.

Just an initial quick skim

The news page looks a little inconsistent compared with the other pages (The

The Download Page is better and the development snapshots more accessable is
good

On the Homepage
Maybe something on the homepage about What OOo is (Briefly)

Before the nice calm big buttons

Certainly more approachable and uncluttered than the previous site layout.

Good Job

Re: [users] convert OO presentation to video on DVD.

2008-03-20 Thread Cameron Smith
I did something similar a few months ago myself.

There maybe an easier or more efficent way to do this.
Using a windows machine what I did was:

Take a screen shot of each slide from the OO Presentation and save them as
seperate pictures (*.jpg, *.png)
I then imported each of these pictures into Windows Movie Maker.
I then Had Windows Movie Maker Generate a Movie for TV (PAL or NTSC
whichever is applicable).
Then Used a DVD Burner Program to create DVD Titles and Chapters and created
a DVD that will work in standard DVD players.

Like I said there may be more effiecent solutions but That is what I did

Your Daughter will be able to open all her previous Microsoft Office Files.
The ones that have a *.doc/*.xls/*.ppt file extension. If your Daughter
starts using Microsoft Office 12 (a.k.a Microsoft Office 2007)

She is going to have to save any documents she want's to use at school or
share with other people in Microsoft Compatability Mode which saves the
files out as *.doc/*.xls/*.ppt which can be ready by other versions of
Microsoft Office (2003/2001/97). This is because Microsoft Office 12
(a.k.aMicrosoft Office 2007) default format is unable to be opened by
Programs
other Than Microsoft Office 2007. This Default Format can be recognised as
*.docx/*.xlsx/*.pptx file extensions.

These new files allow for things like larger spreadsheets (more than 65536
rows) but cannot be opened by other programs even earlier versions of
Microsoft Office

 Hi Cathy

In general the answer is Yes, except for the latest MS Office 2007
 (docx, etc file types).

To open them at school in MS Office, she will have to remember to save
from OOo in MS format, as MS do _not_ support the ISO Standard files
used as default by OOo. Make sure also in the Save dialogue that the
Automatic file name extension is checked.

Re: [users] .rtf support?

Unfortunately The entire bundle has to be downloaded, however you can just
install the Writer module of the package by using the custom install rather
than the full/fast or express install. On the next screen you can tell it to
install only writer (make sure the other modules show a red X beside them)

You could order the CD if you want to use the latest version now
(unless you have a friend with a broadband connection that you can use to
download OO [you can give him a copy of OO for the trouble])
or many computer magazines have the previous version (OO 2.1) on their
cover discs.

While I think the whole community would like to see you complete step 4 it
is not neseccary to remove MS Office Immediately.

OpenOffice and MS Office can reside on the same machine.
If they're both on the same machine you may not want OO to load (open) MS

Just choose to save each MS format file type (*.doc, *.xls *.ppt) the MS

As a middle-aged computer user (and an Advanced

the training needed to use OO from MS Office is
about the same as that
needed to go from MS Office 2000 to MS Office 2002
- ie not a lot.
My 20 year-old son didn't even notice that he was

My kids have been using OO ( MS Office @ school

You are not the sort of person that I am talking

However: you do make the valid point that
retraining from MSO 2000 to MSO 2002

I think the best way to start training people is
just to install OOo into
their machines and invite them a have at it Most
will take right to it, and
training will be minimum. As problems with
compatability (macros} crop up,
they can be addressed at leisure. Dropping a new
version of MSO would be more
dramatic, because it will difficult to keep the 2
versions active at the same
 time.

I think you also need to inform them why your putting
the software on the
computer, and what problems (MS format not default
used)or benefits they may
expect(Can Open MS Files, Create/Export PDF). You also
need to explain what the
program does could be used for (What tasks do they
do now with something else
that they could use the new software for instead).

Writer creates documents/letters, Newsletters. It is
Like MS Word
Calc used for calculations, budgets, Numbers. It is
Like MS Excel
Impress used to make presentations. It is Like MS
Power Point

Internet/Web browsing Firefox has tabs, blocks pop-ups
Use Instead of MS IE

Your point of multiple versions coexisting is a
good-one I have 1.1.5 (use for
the smaller sized PDF that are exported alongside
2.0.1 (and I forgot about that

I am a user of Open Office V1.5 and would like to
upgrade to v2. Some

without loss of data and some require the earlier
version be deleted
prior to the new version installation.

Any Data Files created by Open office (*.sx?) or
Microsoft Documents will remain
untouched by the installation of v2 of Open Office.

For Open Office v2, must it be
installed in its own program directory, while
maintaining v1.5 in its
directory, or can it be downloaded directly over the
earlier v1.5. This
may have been referenced in your question and
answers, but I could not
 find it.

I would recommend Installing v2 of Open Office in it's
own directory. Because
v2.0 comes as a single installer file rather than an
installer and a lot of
files zipped together as the earlier versions of Open
Office.

Doing the installation this way will not destroy the
Earlier Version, both
Version 1.1.5 (earlier) and v2.0 of Open Office will
operate happily on the same
windows machine (I'm using V2.0 but Have 1.1.5 still
on the machine and they
happily co-exist)

You can uninstall version 1.1.5 after you have v2.0
installed and working properly.

Your response to my confusion, will be appreciated. I
have used
Microsoft Office but prefer the Open Office Suite.
Keep up the good work.
 Hal

You may need to re-enter your user settings into v2.0
despite it having a
setting transfer step in the installation and you may
also need to download any
foreign language dictionarys you may use (if you use
languages other than U.S
English) as these also did not seem to transfer
across)

You should be impressed with the good work they did
for v2.0 :)

I would like to know if it is possible to recheck a
word using the spell checker
in 2.0

In 1.1.x there was a handy icon to indicate is the
word was spelled correctly
and you could put in various spellings and recheck the
word numerous times
before having the word replaced in the text.

While the new spell checker is better by giving the
sentence containing the
incorrect word in order to provide context and that
the UI is better thoughtout
there does not appear to be a way to recheck a word
without exiting the spell
checker and re-running the spellcheck.

So does the spell checker in 2.0 allow you to recheck
a word without re-running
the spell checker?

Re: [users] Details of the new website in Firefox 1.0.3

2005-04-25 Thread Cameron Smith
I'm not sure quite what happened when I first visted the site I had
Firefox render something that was akin to the strangeness that Bashar
was describing.

After posting these details of what I was seeing (and presumably what
Bashar was seeing) I reloaded the page and it rendered as it had
appeared as wonderfully in all its glory.

Making these details I've just given redundent.
So I think you can dismiss this

Greetings
Following my reply to Bashar about the new website in Firefox. I would
like to provide some details for the website project crew.

This is how the new website appears in Firefox 1.0.3
-- There is a skip to content link visible above the logo
-- The top tabs are a vertical unordered list.
-- Then there appears to be a grey horizontal rule
-- Beside the horizontal rule (totally off screen [1024x768]) is the
new central menu.

The New Central Menu looks Excellent and there is no problem with it
I know it was no-ones' intention to make the new website so initially
awkward for users of the Firefox browser and I hope these details can
help someone isolate the code sections that are rendering with
unexpected results.

I know myself when I tried changing some HTML 4.01 Tables to HTML 1.0
Transitional that Firefox rendered the rows with 2x the height they had
originally just by switching from HTML to XHTML.

Hello Bashar
I don't think there is anything wrong with your settings of Firefox.
Firefox renders HTML and XHTML closer to the W3C standards than IE does.

Hi,

I have had a look at the new OOo site and agree with you about it's
appearence in Firefox 1.0.3.
Looking at the source code they are using XHTML 1.0 Transitional so I
think the appearence in Firefox compared to IE has to do with how each
browser interperates XHTML 1.0 Transitional.

Firefox is stricter in this reguard than IE
Hope that cleared things up for you?
