Confused (as usual); can you provide: 1) the exact version & OS, 2)

You might want to download the OOo Writer guide and review "Tracking
changes to a document". File|Versions won't turn on unless you are
actually tracking "Versions" of the document w/.odt. An MS Word doc has
no ability for the user(s) to track versions, just as an OOo user has no
ability to track versions generated from an MS Word doc.

But I do see what you mean & perhaps this would be a good enhancement &
I can certainly see the value. Check to see if an RFE or bug report has
already been filed.

Sorry, forgot to add that if you resave the .doc as an .odt,
File|Versions is turned back on: standard OOo 3.2.1 & Ubuntu/go-oo
versions 3.2.0.

Looks like it's been an ongoing problem for some time:

[OOo 2.0 Beta - MS Word export - disabled change tracking?]

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=34124
* Summary: Document from MS Word won't save as word with recorded changes.
Description:Opened: Mon Sep 13 14:56:00 + 2004
Target milestone: OOo Later

That issue report indicates that it was, may have been possible, in
earlier version?

I'll keep looking to see if I can find more. But, I think that the
ability to track changes between the formats would be nearly impossible
to maintain accurately given the wide variation in MS Word versions &
formats (.doc, .docx. word97, word2K, word2007, word2010 etc). And IMO,
accuracy would be a topmost priority in collaborating/tracking document
change.

Nevermind... Dotan's issue with the File|Version not working went woosh
right over my head. I now see that he was refering to. Tested also on a
Win2K w/Word97, made a changed, saved, opened in OOo and see that the
'File|Version' where you can see the changes made by others is not
available. My apologies for the previous noise... I'll go make some more
coffee.

Whatever I was smoking must have been good... just tested (see my mea
culpa post) and the changes tracked fine between OOo (Windows & Linux)
and Word97.

Perhaps they turned it off as you can see the version changes by
hovering the mouse over the marked changed, and also see the listed
changes when you use Edit|Changes|Accept or Reject.

Anyway, again sorry for missing the mark previously.

I honestly can't recall; I _think_ I was searching (OOo search) on
'versioning +word or +doc'.

Versioning in Word97 is the same menu structure: File|Versions. The
change tracking is carried over between the documents, but the
'versions' are not. In OOo Help: versions;file saving as, restriction
there is an ! warning which states:

Versions
Saves and organizes multiple versions of the current document in the
same file. You can also open, delete, and compare previous versions.

To access this command...
Choose File - Versions

If you save a copy of a file that contains version information (by
choosing File - Save As), the version information is not saved with the
file.

I just tested the same in Word97; if I use File|SaveAs the 'Versions'
option is available on the SaveAs dialog, as long as I don't change from
the .doc format. However, if I use File|SaveAs and save the document as
a WordPerfect (.wps) document, the File|Versions is greyed out just as
it is in OOo. So, apparently MS Word (at least Word97) also does not
support versioning with non-native document formats. I can test in
Word2K and Word2007 later.

Cool & well done! Keep in mind that there will be issues with multimedia
in standard OOo (linux) unless you go through the jmf hoop. If they need
multimedia, consider installing the go-oo or oxygenoffice versions
(again I'm talking about linux). Those versions support gstreamer out of
the box.

http://go-oo.org/
  http://go-oo.org/download/
Note: Universal rpm versions (stable) are here should you need to
install independently:
http://go-oo.mirrorbrain.org/stable/

It's easy enough to download the rpm's & then use alien to convert to .debs.

Sure. Tested on Kubuntu 10.04, OpenOffice.org 3.1 or 3.2 (sorry, I'm
not there at the moment) would have the File -> Versions menu item
grey and inaccessible when opening .doc files. Opening an .odt file,
or starting a new file, returned this menu item to operation.

Hi Dotan,

Confirmed with Ubuntu 9.10 with OO.o 3.1. Also happens if you save as
to a .doc file.

A possible explanation is that .doc does not store the version information.
