Perhaps you can complain to your credit card company to get the charge
reversed. You've been charged for something that's a free download from
www.openoffice.org. Unfortunately, there are those who will scam
people, as you have experienced. There are some legit vendors who will
sell you a copy on a CD, but you should never have to pay for a download.

OpenOffice.org is indeed free, if you download it from
www.openoffice.org. As you've discovered, there are some people who are
charging for this package. Some who sell it on a CD provide a useful
function for those who can't download it. However, there are some
unscrupulous types who charge a fair bit of money and provide little or
nothing extra in return. Since you tried to cancel, I'd suggest you
contact your credit card company, to have the charges reversed. Please
go to www.openoffice.org and get a free download of OpenOffice.org,
which you can then install on as many computers as you wish or pass
around to others. Again, there is no charge for OpenOffice.org, from
www.openoffice.org. Please beware of other sites, such as the one you
found, that charge and provide nothing else.

For starters, ask the company that you paid the US$11.95 for a refund.

All sending a request to this list does, is tell the world that you
are oblivious to your financial affairs, and who you deal with. As
such, you make an excellent target for financial crimes.

 What must I do?

I'd suggest contacting Discover, and requesting a new card. Tell them

Do not beat yourself up to much

Even when you buy from the big international
companies, you do not know if your information
will still be safe.

I received a letter from one after December
and was told that their online store was hacked
and ALL of their customer records were stolen.
Everyone of the people I knew who had ordered
from that company, including me, had to get a
new card number.

That is why, if I do not know the company,
I use PayPal to pay the bill. Most online ordering
places can use it.

Don't you hate it when some company sells you
something that was not their in the first place?

When I sell a version of OOo, the buyers know
that the purchase price goes to a local charity as
a fund raiser. The info about where the money
goes in listed one the disk and on a file in the
disk itself.

I am sorry for your troubles.
I have been there, changing card numbers,
any I know many people who were taken
without any way to get your money back
like Discovery Cards have.

Hope you have good luck.
Then sick the Attorney General on them
plus Better Business as well.
Also contact their hosting company
using Whois.org or Whois.net
for the DNS and get someone to track it.
They will loose the hosting, and maybe their domain
plus the government could rip them up as well.

I do not want you to take this lying down
fight back with all your might, or hand it over to
your scrappiest friend.

That is the only way to stop such companies
from cheating. Also give you some education
on what you can do and should never let
done to you.

Stay scrappy untill . . . . . they are gone for good.
I helped drive 2 bad companies under over the years.

do your best.

Then you will have to contact the person from whom you bought OpenOffice.org.
It is legal for others to sell OpenOffice.org: check the license file that
came with the program. But the web site www.openoffice.org does not sell the
program.

It can be downloaded from www.openoffice.org for free. The download page
is http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/. It does help to have a broadband
connection as the download is approximately 100 MB for windows.

OpenOffice.org is free to download, and supported for free in places
like this mailing list by a community of volunteers.

Some vendors do sell OpenOffice.org on CD as a service to people who
cannot download the software and prefer to have it on CD.

If you paid a vendor for OpenOffice.org, you need to contact that vendor
directly.

If you are having problems using OpenOffice.org, just ask here on the
mailing list. There are lots of people here who can help you find a
solution to your problem with the software.
