[Users] Newbie: some questions on ovirt

2013-10-04 Thread Mario Giammarco
Hello,
I am evaluating ovirt as a developer virtualization solution and a
virtualizer for fast provisioning of software in SOHO market (I send entire
vms preconfigured)

I use ovirt on centos6 with glusterfs.

So I have these questions that I have not found the reply in forums:

- In my lab I use spice protocol in a gigabit ethernet, and I use an old
thinkpad as terminal, so I would like to disable compression because spice
rendering is slow;
- I have created some snapshots but I cannot see them in the snapshot list,
what do I need to check?

I would like to export/import snapshot for backups and to provision them:
can you tell me best way to automatize it?

Thanks in advance for help!

I assume you are using a posixfs storage domain?

adding spice-devel on this one

please send a separate email for this issue with rpm-version/screenshot/logs

iirc, export of snapshot is not there only of VM, so you would need to
clone the snapshot first (ayal/federico?)

to automate, you can use the python or java sdk/cli.

in a few weeks hopefully the new backup api will be there which may be
relevant as well to what you are trying to do:

Me too with oVirt 3.3 setup and GlusterFS DataCenter.
One dedicated engine + 2 vdsm hosts. All fedora 19 + ovirt stable.
My trying to migrate VM is CentOS 6.4 fully updated

centos qemu/libvirt versions don't support glusterfs storage domain yet.
6.5 would be needed. we're trying to find a solution until then.

After trying to migrate in webadmin gui I get:
VM c6s is down. Exit message: 'iface'.

For a few moments the VM appears as down in the GUI but actually an
ssh session I had before is still alive.
Also the qemu process on source host is still there.
After a little, the VM results again as Up in the source node from the gui

Actually it never stopped:

Ok. Thanks for clarifying this

You can test fence_ilo2 from command line (if you try a reboot from
command line I suggest to set the host into maintenance mode in oVirt as
otherwise oVirt tries to fence the host too and ILO/IPMI interfaces
sometimes show strange behavior when resetting it twice):
 # /usr/sbin/fence_ilo2 --help

These same blades was configured in the past with RHCS and RHEL 5.x
I've already used fence_ilo2, fence_drac5 and fence_ipmilan in both
RHEL/CentOS 5.x and 6.y
I remember in the past the logic changed regarding fencing
So sometimes there was this workflow depending on agent and its
actions' support:
poweroff
status
poweron

And sometimes there were problems in timing responses so that the node
remained in power off state.
I also opened a bug for this with an improved suggestion, I don't
remeber right now some years ago for the python script
So the question is about how gui settings translates into fence_ilo2
generated command so that I can reproduce it

Thanks for the suggestion about putting host into maintenance

If ilo fencing isn't working as expected (e.g. host gets powered off
instead of rebooted even if action is set to reboot you could try if
fence_ipmilan does the trick. You could also check if you're using the
 latest BIOS version...

Eventually I'll try it.
Blades bios is the latest available as they don't receive updates any more.
For iLO2 fw I think they are on 2.x version even if the better release
probabbly was around 1.80
I'll check also this

I suppose with the fist migration attempt.

But last night I replicated but I only got the heal for ids file, that
gluster apparently solved itself.
Possibly the bug about ide can influence the migration problem and the
possible gluster split brain?
What does it contain dom_md/ids file and when does it get updated?
During install of OS, and yum update it seems all was ok and no heal
about disk file itself
SO I presume the metadata update not correctly managed someway could
induce gluster coherence on this ids file

Yes, this is my environment with plain F19 systems installed and
updated as of yesterday and ovirt repo stable enabled.
CentOS 6.4 x86_64 was configured as a server in oVirt, but wanting to
generate some significant I/O during install to test Gluster
efficiency I choosed Gnome Desktop in CentOS anaconda phase.
This led to 1089 packages installed.
After reboot I ran yum update on the VM, enabled epel and installed
the new ovirt-guest-agent so that I was correctly able to see ip and
kernel of the VM from the webadmin GUI.

But then I incurred in these problems with preliminary tests, donna if
correlated or not:
- migration issue
- shutdown (so power off ) and power on error
see:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1007980
that coud be related to both of them
- gluster split brain

SO the question is : what about ovirtmgmt network for gluster

I suppose it could be a problem too, couldn't it?

yes that is correct, using ovirtmgmt for non management traffic is not a
good idea.

In case I have a dedicated network for gluster for the nodes, how can
i configure it?

Generally there two ways to go about this:

1. add a new network role 'gluster replication' and then adjust the
engine code to pass the network with this role as parameter to the
replication verb in VDSM.

2. in the replication verb in the UI let the user choose which network
to use for the replication.

I am not familiar with the replication verb so I might be missing
something but otherwise I think that solution 2 is more simple and less
invasive then requiring a new network role.

Bala, is there a means to select, for each node, which IP address is to
be used for replication? AFAICT we use the host fqdn, which most
probably resolves to the ovirtmgmt device.

what is replication verb in the UI? Inside UI when I click create
volume and then add Bricks buttons I can only select Server that
in my case is a drop down menu containing only ip addresses of my 2
hypervisors

Or simply do you mean development steps to integrate this missing
functionality in oVirt with steps 1. and 2.?

I am probably missing some background around Gluster, could you share
what triggers the gluster replication?

[Adding Amar from gluster team]

There's no user interface way to trigger replication.
Gianluca, I assume you do not mean geo-replication but replication of
files when volume is of replicated type.

Currently, we do not have a way to specify the network to be used when
gluster communicates with peers.
Like Joop mentioned in a separate mail, if you use FQDN to add host to
the engine, and FQDN resolves differently for internal and external
communication, gluster would then use the internal network for its
communication

OK, eventuallt I'm going to try this way.
Do you think it would work if without dns at all for a test

In /etc/hosts of nodes
192.xxx engine
10.yyy node01

and accordingly in sysconfig files of nodes for their hostnames/ip bindng

And when I preconfigure gluster on nodes I use on node01 the command
gluster peer probe node02

you don't need to install packages from node into centos, just point

to change something in the node you can build your own node as well

Hello All,

I've been searching the archives and not yet managed to find anything on
the subject, so I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction.

I am using nodes with Intel 10G network cards. The driver for these
cards has been tweaked to complain (and fail to start the interface) if
a non-Intel approved optical transceiver is in use. It's easy to
override with the following options:

ixgbe.allow_unsupported_sfp=1

The usual ways of doing this are either to place it on the kernel
command line at boot time, or in /etc/modprobe.d/ixgbe.conf where it
would read options ixgbe allow_unsupported_sfp=1. Unfortunately I
have no idea how to make either of these permanent on an oVirt node.

I'm running the ovirt-node-iso-3.0.1-1.0.2.vdsm.el6.iso image. It has
an /etc/modprobe.d directory where changes do not persist across
reboots. It also has /config/etc where I've added modprobe.d and
modprobe.d/ixgbe.conf. By adding this file to /config/files, I've been
able to make it appear in /etc/modprobe.d at boot time. This has no
effect. It appears to take place after the ixgbe driver has already
been started. If I rmmod ixgbe and modprobe ixgbe manually, it
works fine.

So the general question is, how do I make configuration changes which
persist across reboots? Surely others have run into the same situation
when trying to support specific devices.

Thanks,

Agreed

Maybe this is just a ploy to get everyone to use Spice?

to answer both.
1. its not a ploy, its actually to solve the problem for platforms
without plugins for spice or vnc (no platform has a plugin for vnc).

2. virt-viewer supports both windows and linux
http://www.spice-space.org/download.html

i remember there is a client for mac as well actually, i suggest asking on:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/spice-devel

3. you can write a small wrapper script and associate it with the .vv
file (hopefully, someone will do this and attach an example for others).

this will work for both vnc of your choice and spice on any platform

Yes, indeed it does (even I have no clue how this can influence
networking).
When adding cpu model to my plain kvm machines libvirt xml network isn't
working anymore.
I'll test with some hook scripts if removing the cpu model will solve
the network issue for my oVirt Solaris guest.
Thanks for the hint.

if you can pinpoint and reproduce, probably worth adding the qemu-kvm
mailing list

I managed to get Solaris networking running when removing cpu model and
cpu match attributes, which are added by oVirt but not by virt-manager.

I created a hook script (99_fix_solaris) which removes these
information. Afterwards networking is fine in Solaris guests:
https://github.com/ovido/ovirt-stuff/tree/master/hooks

Just one question renaming:
Is there any downside from oVirt side when removing these cpu
information like e.g. features aren't working as expected?

it just changes to the qemu_64 cpu model.
this sounds like a bug in qemu (well, or solaris) for one of the
flags/behaviors with a specific cpu model.
maybe you can ask on

Re: [Users] Quota for VMs created from templates

2013-10-04 Thread Einav Cohen
Good question, Mitja.

@Gilad:

1. Does the 'VmCreator' Role contain the 'consume-quota' action? so when
granting VmCreator
on Data Center DC1 to user User1, User1 can automatically consume any
quota defined
in DC1 (including, for example, TemplateQuota, in Mitja's case)?

2. Related to both your previous reply and my previous reply: Can a user
associate a CPU/RAM
Quota to a VM that he is now *creating*, even if he doesn't have consume-quota
permissions
on that CPU/RAM Quota? In Mitja's case, he attempted to create a VM associated
with both
TemplateQuota and UserQuota, while the user (maybe - depends on answer to
1) didn't
have permission to consume TemplateQuota, and the VM creation succeeded. Is
that OK?

[if the answer to both questions is no, there is a chance that Mitja
discovered a bug]

Thanks,
Einav

there is a difference between permission to run a VM, and permission to
a quota.

user A has a permission to consume a quota Q. user A assigns that quota
Q to resource R
user B has permission to run resource R. user B doesn't need a
permission to any quota.

i.e., permission to run is a relation between user and a resource.
permission to quota, is to associate a resource with a quota.

Usman,
the only thing that comes to my mind is something related to:

http://gerrit.ovirt.org/13529

which means that in some way the restored volumes are either inaccessible
(permissions?) or their metadata is corrupted (but it doesn't seem so).

There is probably another Traceback in the logs that should give us more
information.

Could you post somewhere the entire vdsm log?

Re: [Users] Understanding Console Options

2013-10-04 Thread Haoyang Haven Liu
I can appreciate the .vv file for certain platforms in which virt-viewer
provides additional benefits, but my point was I (and I suspect at least some
other) use existing VNC clients in Mac/Windows/Linux, and perhaps don't want to
use virt-viewer. In those cases, that the download .vv file method is more
needlessly cumbersome as compared to the popup with host/port/password
method, whether it involves writing a wrapper, or just open the downloaded text
file.

As I said, perhaps instead of the two console options scheme currently, it
should be a three console option scheme with VNC, virt-viewer, SPICE,
because the download .vv file method is not at all (generic) VNC clients
friendly.

 Agreed

Maybe this is just a ploy to get everyone to use Spice?

...if that's the case; when are we going to get Spice plugin for Mac OSX?

 to answer both.
 1. its not a ploy, its actually to solve the problem for platforms without
plugins for spice or vnc (no platform has a plugin for vnc).

 2. virt-viewer supports both windows and linux
 http://www.spice-space.org/download.html

i remember there is a client for mac as well actually, i suggest asking on:
 http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/spice-devel

 3. you can write a small wrapper script and associate it with the .vv file
(hopefully, someone will do this and attach an example for others).
this will work for both vnc of your choice and spice on any platform

Console options dialog and then open incoming .vv file (e.g. using

to answer both.
1. its not a ploy, its actually to solve the problem for platforms without

[Users] Adding ISO storage, post engine install - is it possible?

2013-10-04 Thread platformagnostic
I've set up the oVirt engine, v. 3.3.0-4.el6, on a CentOS 6.4 system. I was
hoping to use an existing ISO repository on my network, that's NFS-shared
for other hypervisors (Xen, ESX), but it doesn't look like oVirt is designed
to support that. That's not too much of an obstacle, I can recreate the ISO
store on my oVirt engine.

However, I didn't create an ISO storage domain during the engine setup
sequence. I don't really see a way to do this now.

I've tried using the Import Domain feature in the engine web admin, but
that tells me Failed to retrieve existing storage domain information.

I've tried using the New Domain with ISO/NFS settings, but when I click
OK, nothing happens. No errors, the New Domain window stays in place, no
visible changes.

Any suggestions on adding an ISO storage domain, after the initial oVirt
install?

 Question:

Is there a way to set the webadmin to only use NoVNC as a default for the
console? Since the devs decided to remove the popup window and only download
a file, it added several steps for me to be able to look at the console on my
Mac. There isn't a packaged viewer for spice on OSX as of yet and every time
I have tried to get it installed it fails. So, my only option is VNC of which
there are none that will open the .vv files.

did you try http://www.spice-space.org/page/OSX_Client ?

for VNC - associate the .vv with a TextEdit or something similar, and do
copypaste of credentails as you were doing from the popup

for noVNC, well, it's a per user and browser setting (for all VMs), but no easy
way how to set it in advance for many users. There is a global option for SPICE
to select either plugin or .vv, but that doesn't appl to the new browser-only
clinets. But that should be relatively easy to implement…Franta?

Thanks for providing your, but they begin too late.

The bug is still a mystery to me. Something garbles Vdsm's internal
representation of virtual disks. And it's bad.

I would appreciate if you could dig backward in your logs and find the
last successfull startup of a VM, say W2K8_cluster1
(86f10137-d917-4508-a07a-3f83e6f24a95). Then, browse forward to find the
first failure (be it on next startup of VM or during migration).

Re: [Users] Understanding Console Options

2013-10-04 Thread Michal Skrivanek

I don't mean to appear argumentative, but these suggestions sounds like
 non-answers:

 1. my favorite VNC viewer is the Screen Sharing app in Mac (which is the
default VNC viewer that comes with every OS X installation). It does not take
input files (AFAIK). The previous solution was good in that it just presents
 the password, which I can copy/paste into Screen Sharing;

Have you tried SPICE with http://www.spice-space.org/page/OSX_Client ?
Have you tried noVNC support new in 3.3?

 2. the problem with downloading a file is that I have to open it (with yet
another application), and delete the file afterwards.

indeed, that's not very convenient :-/

Again, I'm not even saying the .vv file does not have benefits or that the
option should not be there, as I'm sure those that use virt-viewer can enjoy
it. But not everyone uses virt-viewer, and not all popular VNC viewer
 supports file inputs.

well, the file contains all the info needed for connection so with a simple
wrapper every single VNC client which accepts a host/pwd on cmdline will work
just fine.
regarding your favorite app, there seems to be way how to open it without
asking for anything, see
http://superuser.com/questions/217425/is-there-a-way-to-launch-screensharing-from-the-terminal
so how about writing a simple bash wrapper to parse out the hostpassword and
launch open vnc://user@pass:server:port ?
If you succeed it would be great if you can share your wrapper script

You can't possibly be telling me that using a VNC client such as mine is
benefited by the download .vv file method as compared to the previous
method. Anyway you slice it, it sounds just like well, too bad. deal with it

I hope one of the three solutions above would work for you…

Thanks,

I can appreciate the .vv file for certain platforms in which virt-viewer
provides additional benefits, but my point was I (and I suspect at least
some other) use existing VNC clients in Mac/Windows/Linux, and perhaps
don't want to use virt-viewer. In those cases, that the download .vv
file method is more needlessly cumbersome as compared to the popup with
host/port/password method, whether it involves writing a wrapper, or just
 open the downloaded text file.

As I said, perhaps instead of the two console options scheme currently, it
should be a three console option scheme with VNC, virt-viewer,
SPICE, because the download .vv file method is not at all (generic)
 VNC clients friendly.

it is missing a script for you to associate with your browser, which will
get the .vv file and launch your favorite vnc client with the info from the
 .vv file?

or, if you prefer, associate it with your favorite text editor so you can
copypaste the same info as before.
 It's a browser's association you have to set/change

 Agreed

Maybe this is just a ploy to get everyone to use Spice?

...if that's the case; when are we going to get Spice plugin for Mac OSX?

 to answer both.
 1. its not a ploy, its actually to solve the problem for platforms
without plugins for spice or vnc (no platform has a plugin for vnc).

 2. virt-viewer supports both windows and linux
 http://www.spice-space.org/download.html

i remember there is a client for mac as well actually, i suggest asking
 on:
 http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/spice-devel

 3. you can write a small wrapper script and associate it with the .vv
file (hopefully, someone will do this and attach an example for others).
this will work for both vnc of your choice and spice on any platform

 Hey Fabian

Thanks you so much .. abv mentioned iso draft for el6 works like a
charm config is persistent now ..only issue I faced is after
configuring first interface eth0 when it starts VDSM other
service it hangs at close hard reboot
was required but after that no issue tried multiple reboots different
 n/w configs ..looks perfect.

I never noticed this, but I'll keep an eye open and see if it happens
regularly.

just wanted to ask some n/w related q to clear my doubts .. may be its
not a right group to ask such question

Please find attached image for below
1- ovirt-node creates Bridged network only when vm network option is
selected ... ? correct me if I am wrong
2- is it recommended or best practice to select ovirtmgmt for VM
 n/w ? so that it make a Bridged n/w
3- for Migration/Display network whats the best practice do we need to
 create manual bridge setup ?

Sorry, I actually can't help you with this. But maybe somemone more
familiar with Engines UI can help here.

Thanks again for prompt response really appreciate yours help ..

I'm glad that it solved the issue - and I must admit that I wasn't
really aware that custom ifcfg configs were used.

Greetings and a nice weekend

  Hi,

we encountered the same problem as Anil.

We wanted to give this nightly iso a try:

 http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/node-devel/825/distro=centos64/artifact/ovirt-node-iso-3.1.0-0.999.825.el6.iso

but it seems it doesn't contain the required vdsm-plugin?

 True. The plugin is missing.

I've prepared two isos (but untested) which address this bug:

 http://fedorapeople.org/~fabiand/node/ovirt-node-iso-3.0.1-1.0.201310020841draft.vdsm.el6.iso

 http://fedorapeople.org/~fabiand/node/ovirt-node-iso-3.1.0-0.999.201310020841draft.vdsm.fc19.iso

They are basically the base iso (found in jenkins) plus an
 edit-node
 run:
 /edit-node --repo edit-node-el6.repo --install
 ovirt-node-plugin-vdsm
 ovirt-node-iso-3.0.1-1.0.201310020841draft.el6.iso

Please let me know if they fix the problem.

you were doing the right thing to persist the network cfg
 files. It
might have been node that was to greedy when reconfiguring

You might take a look at this fix:
   http://gerrit.ovirt.org/19705
It is untested but at least I could reproduce the behavior
 you were
seeing and prepared the patch based on that findings.
An ISO containing that fix will sooner or later land here:
   http://jenkins.ovirt.org/job/node-devel/

(The queue is currently quite long, which can take a day
 until the patch
above is turned into an ISO).

Long story short, please check if this patch fixes your
 problem, I'll
also try to take a look at it when an iso is ready.

And file a bug if you want to track the state of this
 issue.
