It's actually "on bare metal", with "bare ovirt 3.3" inside it.

> Where can i find any packages for installation?

For now you can use the nightly repo. As a minimum, install
'ovirt-hosted-engine-setup' and
run 'hosted-engine --deploy'.

I don't think we have yet any wiki page for it.

You can have a look at [1], which is for migrating an existing 3.3 engine to
hosted-engine,
but instead of backup/restore simply do a new setup inside the VM.

[Users] EL5 support for VirtIO SCSI?

2013-11-12 Thread Paul Jansen
I have just set up an Ovirt 3.3.0 install and have done a test install of
Centos 6.4 in a VM.  The VM was configured with an IDE drive and a virtio-scsi
drive.  The Centos 6.4 install sees both drives OK.
I'm wanting to do some testing on a product that is based on EL5, but I'm
finding that it cannot see the virtio-scsi drive.  It does show up in the
output of 'lspci', but I don't see a corresponding 'sd' device.

I've just tried installing Centos 5.10 and the support is not there.

Does anyone know of any tricks to allow EL5 to see the virtio-scsi device?___

Not really, actually,
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.extras.cvs/1127350
shouldn't be included in the previous build and it was during the spec
merge from fedora spec, 4.12.0 and 4.13.0 for 3.3, my bad.

I did a new build on rawhide right now and the workaround is not needed
anymore. I have back the original /bin/hostname for rawhide (as I did
above).

We should be fine with vdsm-4.13.0-11 or higher.

Re: [Users] Failed to start JBoss AS

2013-11-12 Thread Bob Doolittle
Well, this looks to me like an instance of
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=996005

That bug has not been updated in almost 3 months, however. The last note
says "Working on CI". Does that mean Code Integration? It looks like
maybe it was fixed in version "is10", whatever that is, and is currently
Verified by QA. Is that right?

Unfortunately that bug report has no description whatsoever of what the
underlying problem was. I would like to know:

1. Is there any workaround?
2. Can I start again by re-installing Engine and importing, or is the
issue with the exported VMs and/or template so I'd just hit the problem
again?

It sort of looks like the problem was with a template
(org.ovirt.engine.core.common.action.ImportVmTemplateParameters). If so,
can I import the VMs and avoid the Templates? Or am I perhaps
misinterpreting that message?

Shouldn't bug reports always contain some sort of diagnostic information
about the underlying cause and/or workarounds?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: [Users] Ovirt 3.3 removing disk failure

2013-11-12 Thread Saša Friedrich

What I found so far...

Function returning error is getDomPath in
"/usr/share/vdsm/storage/fileSD.py":

def getDomPath(sdUUID):
pattern = os.path.join(sd.StorageDomain.storage_repository,
   sd.DOMAIN_MNT_POINT, '*', sdUUID)
# Warning! You need a global proc pool big as the number of NFS
domains.

domPaths = getProcPool().glob.glob(pattern)
if len(domPaths) == 0:
raise se.StorageDomainDoesNotExist(sdUUID)
elif len(domPaths) > 1:
raise se.StorageDomainLayoutError(sdUUID)
else:
return domPaths[0]

When I click remove disk in engine, variable "pattern" gets
"/rhev/data-center/mnt/*/2799e01b-6e6e-4f3b-8cfe-779928ae9941", and
"domPaths" is empty

Yes, exactly. It wasn't my intention to blame anyone. I just wanted to
express how hard it can be to test and show up some points for future
work ;) I'm looking forward to the recent QA plans.

There has been an impressive overall improvement in the project over the
last year, but there is still room for improvement. Thanks all.

I now tried several times to test the beta 3.3.1 rpms, but they can't

I'm glad to read you're testing 3.3.1. May I ask you to add yourself to

One time it required a future
selinux-policy, although the needed selinux fix was delivered in a much
lower version. Now the rpms have broken requirements. It requires
"hostname" instead of "/bin/hostname". This broken requirement is not
included in the vdsm 3.3 branch, so I wonder where it comes from?

Indeed, that's bad. It has been included from a patch only on Fedora
koji build rawhide. The others points here already have been answered by
others developers. Anyway, we have updated the build.

We would appreciate if you could continue the tests with the new test

A concerned user just asked me how did I build this. I just took the
source from koji,
http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org//packages/python-pep8/1.4.5/2.fc20/src/python-pep8-1.4.5-2.fc20.src.rpm

[Users] [Bug] 3.3.1. Beta Create VM does not work with VNC / Linux VM

2013-11-12 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

we just discovered a bug in ovirt-engine 3.3.1 beta from ovirt.org repo:

You can't create a VM (via webadmin) with the following options:

set VM-Name
select Operating System: "Other Linux", "Linux", or any Linux distro
click: "Show advanced options"
switch: console: protocol: from SPICE to VNC

Hit "Ok"

receive the following error in webadmin gui:

"Error while executing action:

bug1:

Cannot add VM. Cannot set single display device via VNC display."

(bug1 is the vm-name)

workaround1: select "other os" or any windows version and the setup
works with vnc
workaround2: select spice as protocol

I created a BZ for this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1029584

I suggest this bug as a blocker for 3.3.1. release

I have not tested this yet. I have been focused on the host's networking
behavior outside of the ovirt/vdsm bits.
(Mainly, it checking in on other things.) I realize this presents a flaw in my
thinking that the host was not behaving
properly. I will adjust my thinking on this item, and then test with a valid
set of criteria.

That makes a lot of sense to me now. And, actually, I believe is the way it is
working, the more I think about the behavior I'm seeing.

> You can use 'ip rule' to see the rules VDSM configures. It creates two rules

This is super helpful. Thank you.

A large part of this is likely me needing to adjust my thinking. As long as my
VM's are behaving as expected, do I actually need the host
to, by default, send traffic out the 'public' interface? If I do, what traffic
is that? Can I change that traffic? The likely hood is that there are
only a small amount of data, mostly centering around metrics, and some config
management, that would be host sourced data that currently
isn't destined for my management network. Maybe those data *should* run over
the management network, if my desire for an extra layer
of protection of those data is a valid desire.

Of course, that's not the way I have things arranged right now, but, maybe I
can fix that.

Thank you very much for your help, I have enough information to get back on the
problem now.

I suspect you are not interested in "excuses" for each of the failures,
let us look forwards. My conclusions are:
- Do not require non-yet-existing rpms. If we require a feature that is
not yet in Fedora/Centos, we must wait. This is already in effect, see

- Keep the docs updated. Our Jenkins slaves have pep8-1.4.6, so we

Sandro, who built the python-pep8-1.4.6 that sits on the el6 Jenkins

Re: [Users] Default route on hosts

2013-11-12 Thread Assaf Muller
Can users outside of the hosts' networks reach the VMs in the hosts?

If you use netstat -rn it is expected that the gateway will be 0.0.0.0, as
ifcfg-ovirtmgmt has DEFROUTE=yes and ifcfg-public has DEFROUTE=no, then
ovirtmgmt's
'gateway' (0.0.0.0) will be determined as the host's default gateway. However
with the new multiple gateways feature we configure source routing to make
sure that traffic that comes (from the outside) in the public network's device
will return the way it came in.

You can use 'ip rule' to see the rules VDSM configures. It creates two rules
and a routing table per device. You can use 'ip route show table %s' on each
table, where the IDs can be obtained by 'ip rule'.

So, interestingly or not, when I define a gateway on the public interface
(through the web management interface or DHCP), and I don't worry about making
the
DEFROUTE=yes setting in my "public" network, the box behaves like it has an
incorrect default route. Now, my management network has a gateway
of 0.0.0.0, as it is a completely simple network, so that may be part of the
problem. I'm not sure the impact of a 0.0.0.0 as a gateway.

I'm not sure how to poke at this further to figure out where the breakage is.
Routing looks like it has gotten a little more complex, and I'm still operating
with
'netstat -rn' and 'route add foo' type commands.

patch isn't small and 3.3.1 has been in beta/frozen for a while now
(pending last vdsm issue).
so i prefer this to wait to 3.3.2 (already fixed there) which beta
should be available once we release 3.3.1.

Re: [Users] [vdsm] Low quality of el6 vdsm rpms

2013-11-12 Thread Yaniv Bronheim
Hey Patrick,

For the pep8 issue, as mentioned you should check pep8 --version and use 1.4.6.
If you use older version, just upgrade with python-pip
(yum install python-pip , and then `pip-install install pep8 --upgrade`)

Second, try to follow http://www.ovirt.org/Vdsm_Developers , it specifies the
repositories you need to set (which should solve and selinux-policy package you
miss) and should be the same for ovirt-3.3.
About the hostname issue, can you detail more about the issue .. I'm not
familiar with such error

There are some differences between ovirt-3.3 branch and master in the
requirements scope, each with specific reason.
you should checkout ovirt-3.3 branch and not ovirt-3.3.0 for those tests

We are working on the quality and constantly trying to increase and improve the
software.
About the builds process you can talk with eedri for more details

Regards,
Yaniv Bronhaim.

Hi,

thanks for the hint, but according to
http://www.ovirt.org/Vdsm_Developers the latest python-pep8
(python-pep8-1.3.3-3.el6) for el6 is already installed.

And further digging shows that probably

Hi all,

sorry for this rant, but...

I now tried several times to test the beta 3.3.1 rpms, but they can't
even be installed in the most times. One time it required a future
selinux-policy, although the needed selinux fix was delivered in a much

"hostname" instead of "/bin/hostname". This broken requirement is not
included in the vdsm 3.3 branch, so I wonder where it comes from?
Anyway. So I proceeded and tried to build vdsm myself once again.

[Users] Default route on hosts

2013-11-12 Thread Assaf Muller
Hi Christopher,

Your understanding of the terms is correct.
A small clarification - Hosts are mostly referred to as nodes when running
oVirt Node, a custom Linux distribution purposely made to be used as a host in
oVirt.

As for your question:
DEFROUTE=yes/no in the hosts' ifcfg files control the default gateway of the
host. Currently, by design, the management network's gateway (Which sounds like
your management network doesn't have?) will be kept as the host's default
gateway. This was done to make sure that the engine maintains connectivity to
its hosts.

oVirt 3.3 introduced a feature called multiple gateways which may assist you.
If you configured a gateway on the public network (Either statically via oVirt
or via DHCP), then all traffic into the hosts through their public network NIC
will be returned via that nic, *even though* the host's default gateway is
ovirtmgmt's gateway.

To clarify further: The current behavior is that the host's default gateway is
ovirtmgmt's gateway. This controls traffic originating from *within* the host
such as communications with storage. Incoming traffic, however, such as traffic
originating from users from outside of the datacenter, will be returned via
the device that the traffic came in on.

If that doesn't work for you, and you feel like you need to control the host's
default gateway via oVirt, then please file an RFE. I can't guarantee a
timeline
or that it will ultimately make it in the product, but the RFE will be
carefully taken into account when designing future versions.

Subject: [Users] Default route on hosts

Before I ask my question, I want to make sure I'm using the right terms:
engine == the system that manages the ovirt environment. Runs the web
interface, etc
host(s) == the physical machine(s) the engine uses to deploy virtual machines
on. Sometimes referenced as a node?
vm(s) == the guest systems that are controlled by the engine and run on the
hosts, that do the stuff you present to the world at large, whatever your world
at large would be.

Is that correct?

In my environment, I have a customer facing network and another network that's
on a set of isolated switches. I desire to use the isolated
network as the management network, and am naming the other network "public" in
the web management interface.

In the interface, I see these labeled as ovirtmgmt and public, for the
management network (private) and the customer facing network (public).

>From what I can tell from poking at the configuration files, and from a couple
>references in other threads, the 'DEFROUTE' setting in the ifcfg-* files
gets set to 'yes' only for the ovirtmgmt network, not for any other bridged
network.

I can override this by hand as I deploy hosts, but am hoping for a way to do so
within the ovirt management framework, so I have less bits that can
go wrong. Is there a way for me to get the DEFROUTE set to no for the ovirtmgmt
interface and to yes on the public interface as I deploy hosts?

Is there a reason I'm not seeing for avoiding this behavior?

Hi Maor,

that's interesting.
Honestly, I don't remember the exact paths, but I think we did setup
everything "the standard way" :). A colleague of
mine tries to reproduce this again, this time with a newer engine
version.

Will this patchset get included in 3.3.1?

We would like to give it a shot, but can't spend the time to build
ovirt-engine from scratch with this patch.

Maybe someone can provide a nightly build?
