Sorry, I posted this under the wrong title as I had started a post about
network config, then figured it out but started out this post without changing
the subject ☹

Re: [ovirt-users] Yum Public key for vdsm-4.16.14-0.el7.x86_64.rpm is not installed

2015-04-27 Thread Bill Dossett
The problem is that I put the

[ovirt-3.5-pre]
name=Latest oVirt 3.5 pre release
baseurl=http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.5-pre/rpm/el$releasever
enabled=1
skip_if_unavailable=1
gpgcheck=1

in my yum.repos.d\ovirt-3.5.repo file... which I did as per the release
notes, but maybe I shouldn't do this on the nodes. Struggling a bit with
releases and version and things. I was only trying 3.5 RC as it may fix a
problem I encountered when trying to bond two interfaces...

Not sure if that helps anyone else or if I was just being stupid putting it
there in the first place :( but on the road again.

Thanks
Bill

Hi, sorry to bother everyone, but I am trying to add a 3rd host to my cluster
and it keeps failing with the above error.

As far as I can think, I have done this exactly the same on all three hosts and
this 3rd one is failing.

I am using the 3.5 pre release... any idea on what I might have done wrong?

Hi,

simply follow instructions here :http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_3.5.2_Release_Notes
Notice it is about a RC. The stable release should come very soon now, you
might wait for it rather than upgrading two times.

2015-04-20 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi, no network manager... I have been sort of doing what you describe. I
create my first interface manually with a minimum configuration (when I was
first testing ovirt, I was using trunked ports and vlans, so had to do all that
manually) then add the host to ovirt-engine and it did it's magic and bonded
interfaces for me.. I'm going to try a later release I think as it seems there
may have been a bug like this in 3.5.1.

Thank you

Hi Bill,

First, i would strongly suggest that you check whether the interfaces are
explcicitly NOT managed by NetworkManager, thats the way we do it.

We have something like this

-

DEVICE=ovirtmgmt
TYPE=Bridge
DELAY=0
STP=off
ONBOOT=yes
IPADDR=
NETMASK=
GATEWAY=
BOOTPROTO=none
DEFROUTE=yes
NM_CONTROLLED=no
HOTPLUG=no

And

-
DEVICE=bond0
BONDING_OPTS='miimon=100 updelay=0 downdelay=0 mode=802.3ad
xmit_hash_policy=layer3+4'
BRIDGE=ovirtmgmt
ONBOOT=yes
NM_CONTROLLED=no
HOTPLUG=no
---

Physical interfaces

-

DEVICE=p3p3
HWADDR=
MASTER=bond0
SLAVE=yes
ONBOOT=yes
MTU=1500
NM_CONTROLLED=no

-

And we actually create all the interfaces BEFORE ovirt installation even though
the files will be regenerated after installing and configuring ovirt (vdsm)

That works like a charm for us

Cheers
Soeren

[ovirt-users] iSCSI interface to GlusterFS cluster

2015-04-12 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

Not sure if this can be done using ovirt engine or if I have to do this more at
the GlusterFS command level.

I have set up a Gluster enabled Cluster with a Volume which is working fine
I can mount it using the filesystem thype glusterfs.

While I am going to test this with Ovirt and VMs eventually. I am currently
exploring using the cluster as an iSCSI target and if that is possible to
configure thru ovirt or if I now need to work more at the Gluster command level
and don't get to use the nice UI to configure this.

Any pointers to what I should read next about this would be appreiciated.

Thanks

[ovirt-users] FW: gluster and multipath

2015-04-09 Thread Bill Dossett
Fumble fingered accidental send...

From: Bill Dossett

Subject: gluster and multipath

Hi,

Just got very confused trying to add create an additional brick on my gluster
node (I had created one yesterday and all was fine0

I had already created a partition on my /dev/sdb called sdb1

But when I tried mkfs.xfs (I am using xfs as that was in the example I was
following - if LVM or something else would be better I am open to suggestions!)

It said /dev/sdb1 no such file or directory - which confused me as this worked
yesterday.

I deleted the partition recreated it and tried and then it said that the device
was busy.

It appears that multipathd is the culprit... but what I am struggling with is
why it worked yesterday?? I may have created the partition before I pushed the
gluster install to it from the ovirt-engine? And does that install multipathd
and it is now grabbing my devices? It is the only thing I can think of.

And if that is the case - I guess I have to blacklist these devices in
multipath.conf while I create the partitions? And reboot and then remove the
blacklist and reboot - seems a bit clunky, is there a better way to add
partitions and bricks?

Or I am just in a vortex wormhole of misunderstanding and grasping at stars to
try and pull myself out ?

Thankyou for any advice - especially as this may not be so ovirt or a question,
but it's what I am working on.

[ovirt-users] gluster export

2015-04-08 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

Kind of a stupid question, but I couldn’t figure it out today.

I setup a gluster cluster with ovirt-engine. Created the volume with a couple
of bricks in a replicating cluster.

I will eventually be using some of this anyway with ovirt Vms, but also
interested in using the glusterfs and cifs and nfs and hopefull iSCSI block to
other devices… but I could find out what the export of the glusterfs
server:/path was. Is this something I have to setup in addition to the
gluster cluster. I thought I had read something that you need to set it up,
but then couldn’t find it with all the different documents and windows I had
open and it was late. So hoping someone can point me in the right direction
for this.

Thank you.

Bill

Hi BIll,
You do need to create the export. Here are the steps we noted from our build.
I’ll try and find where we got some of the build ideas from.

mkdir -p /gluster/{data,engine,meta,xport}/brick ; mkdir /mnt/lock

for i in data engine meta xport ; do gluster volume create ${i} replica 3
hostname:/gluster/${i}/brick hostname:/gluster/${i}/brick
hostname:/gluster/${i}/brick ; done

gluster volume status

for i in data engine meta xport ; do gluster volume set ${i} group virt ; done
for i in data engine meta xport ; do gluster volume set ${i} storage.owner-uid
36 ; gluster volume set ${i} storage.owner-gid 36 ; done
for i in data engine meta xport ; do gluster volume start ${i} ; done

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt and glusterfs setup

2015-02-23 Thread Bill Dossett
thanks for all the replies on this… very enlightening.

I’ve got a few servers that I am going to deploy with – some dell 2950s and
luckily they came out of production recently and all have dual 10Gb cards in
them. I’m not sure what they have for local storage yet, so may need to beef
that up, but I think it’s going to be a good base lab.

I am not planning on anything production, just want to get ahead of the game
and this is pretty much just proof of concept at this stage – maybe in a years
time or so, once Redhat have certified it, if they do…

Thanks
Bill

[ovirt-users] ovirt and glusterfs setup

2015-02-18 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

I'm in at the deep end...

Looking for some advice on if this is possible - and what version I should try
I with if so.

We are a heavily VMware oriented company... but I am trying to get RHEV/oVirt
in the door. Honestly I would prefer oVirt, but if they insist on enterprise
support I go to Redhat.

So I have had a play with VMware VSAN and know how it works. I am trying to
more or less replicate this setup using open source.

So VSAN uses 3 or more ESXi nodes, with local harddisks as the storage medium
as a virtual SAN. The SAN performance is quite high as you put at least 1 SSD
in each node.

What is nice is you don't have the NAS element here. VMs are on the local
storage, which is partially SSD, so performance is quite good.

I went to a Redhat presentation on Redhat storage and GlusterFS and basically
this acts as a big software defined NAS which does some pretty cool things, but
that's not exactly what I need.

I would like to build oVirt on top of CentOS Oss... that have local storage in
them that is distributed and redundant in the event of a node failure.

And I probably need to try and build this in a lab under Fusion on my Mac Book
pro to begin with anyway (that bit I'm farily confident with) and if I get that
working can probably get some older kit to try it out for real as a PoC to few
people.

So, I've set up oVirt before that should be ok, I haven't setup Gluster is
there any documents that would help me down this road and make sure I start out
using the best version.

Any advice or pointers would be gratefully received.

Thanks

[ovirt-users] FW: ovirt and glusterfs setup

Well, it seems to be something that RedHat were saying was going to be
supported.

I am far more familiar with VMware VSAN and that is current a VERY hot topic.

With VMware HA and VSAN capabilities and new chassis coming out with very high
density drive capabilities and the correct number of nodes, you can lose a node
with no more downtime than if compute and storage are separated and it's a
helluva lot less expensive than traditional Fibre SAN.

Saying that it is in it's infancy.

I'm interested in your ovirt deployment - thanks for the kind offer - but very
short on time as well as this is a side project - so this may move at a snails
pace... so I thought I could get started on my own.

I think I instaslled ovirt 3.2 previously... and I did see mention of Gluster
Domains. If you let me know what I need to do to have a look at your
deployment I would appreciate it.

I may be slow at responding though as I am spread very thin right now.

Thanks
Bill

I can tell you from my experience that you should have your storage and compute
node separate. Gluster support is built into ovirt, and you just need to make
sure when setting up your engine you tell it to be [both]

The architecture you describe whether it be vmware or ovirt is destined to be a
disaster. That is my matter of opinion based on my experience.

I have a free to use ovirt deployment that you could run your desired setup on.

[ovirt-users] vmware type functionality

2014-10-22 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

I am trying to work out how to do some things that I do in VMware pretty
regularly.

a.Browse a datastore to see what is on it (from the GUI)

b. Find a VM on a data store ... that was in another data center and
register the VM with the current data center.
Sorry for asking, but I'm not having huge amounts of luck googling on this at
the moment - though will probably find the answer immediately after I post this.

Thanks

[ovirt-users] overt viewer on mac osx

2014-09-24 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

I got pretty excited when I found out there was a girt-viewer for mac… if this
would work, it means I could manange my ovirt stack from my mac without having
to login to my windows VDI.

I have downloaded and installed per the instructions - and then downloaded the
console.vv file and run the command line to start the viewer with the
console.vv - the first time it popped up and then said that spice needed
authentication… tried my virt-engine password that didn’t work, hit cancel and
it shut down. Tried it again and now it just says it can’t determine the
connection type from uri and I have to quit.

I am running OSX 10.9.4 and apparently this has only been tested on 10.9.1…
hoping there is a fix to make this work, or am I doing something wrong? The
command I am using is

/Applications/RemoteViewer.app/Contents/MacOS/RemoteViewer Downloads/console.vv

and the console.vv is indeed in the Downloads dir off my home dir.

Thanks

Subject: [ovirt-users] sysprep answers

Hi,

I’ve managed to get my first templates ready to go…. But I am lacking a
document that explains how I can add the VMs to my domain. I have sealed the
template but the ovirt docs seem to stop there and the redhat ones talk
about using rhevm-config commands.

I have found the place to set time zone and enter a domain if I edit the
template, however to add a computer to our domain we need to use a special
account and I don’t see any way of specifying this.

Any help or further reading would be appreciated

the user that is used by default is the user that is set for the domain
you can see it with
# engine-manage-domains list

or directly from the db

# su - postgres -c psql engine -c \select * from vdc_options where
option_name = 'AdUserName';\

if you need to use different user, you can do that with 'run-once' option:
in the webadmin, select the vm, click run once, under 'boot options' mark
floppy and select sysprep, under 'initial run' select go to sysprep, and select
'alternate credentials'

in ovirt 3.5 you can also save a custom sysprep file containing any custom data:
Bug 1080002 - OVIRT35 - [RFE] Enable user defined Windows Sysprep file

[ovirt-users] integration of overt with CloudForms

2014-09-24 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

I’m finally at the point that I think I would like to try and add my
ovirt-engine to our commercial CloudForms portal… I seem to be reading that it
is supported - but when adding the provider it asks for the api port for ovirt
and I don’t know what that is… does anyone know if it works? and if so what
the API port for ovirt-engine is? and anything else that I can read about it
doing would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

[ovirt-users] question on VM

2014-09-22 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

I am creating my first ovirt VM from a windows 2008 R2 iso.

After setting it all up, loading the drivers etc it looks fine, but it seems
like it has no network connectivity. This is odd as it is obtaining a DHCP
address and it looks like it can browse for other windows systems on the
network. But I can't ping it, it can't ping out and I can't remote desktop
into it. Normally this sounds like a firewall problem, but I disabled that
immediately. It is using the virtio driver. It is connected to the default
network ovirtmgmt which has a dhcp server on it. Ovirt-engine says the
interface is up and connected and windows thinks it is connected to an unknown
network with out internet access. I can't ping the default gateway from the VM
console. Seems silly, but I've kind of run out of things to try on this now.
I am using VLAN tagging on the ovirt-engine network side of things and it is
plugged into a trunked port... but I wouldn't think that has anything to do
with the VM itself as I am not doing anything with VLANs on the VM itself, it
is just connected to it. All the host network/interfaces are pingable in the
cluster as well.

Thanks if anyone has any ideas what I might be looking for.

Thank you. IE wasn't telling me about a .vv download... I had reverted to
using IE as virt-engine seemed like it was happier with me using IE and warned
me that graphic display wasn't optimal with FireFox.. so anyway, I tried
FireFox again and it offered to download the .vv file and I opened it and
associated it with Remote Viewer and yes it works. Looks like I am back on

Once you install virt-viewer in Windows, it should be associated with .vv
files. When you click Console then, you should be offered with .vv file
download, let it open with virt-viewer (should work
out-of-the-box) and voilà, you should see your console.

If you're not offered with .vv file for download, try choosing Native client
method in Console options (and of course if you have spice console selected in
VM options)

so,

 I am assuming I connect to virt-engine for this - should the console
 button in the virt-engine bring up the remote viewer,

yes, it should,

  or do I have to start the remote view separately?

no,

 I turned the firewall off to make sure that isn't the problem.

Firewall is not involved unless you restrict outbound connections as well,

 It appears its trying fire virt-manager up on to a remote x display I guess,
 but I just get unable to connect to the graphic server
 spice://ovirt.pbi.global.pvt:5900

again, virt-manager is not the thingy you want, virt-viewer is.

HTH,

David

  Any further advice on getting this running would be greatly appreciated.

 Bill

 Hi Bill,

 Yes, the document is already dated. Lately, you don't have to go through the
 hoops needed to make spice-x work. Even if you can get it, it will only work
 for you in IE 11. You should instead just install virt-viewer [1] and the
 consoles should Just Work for you using the Natice Client (.vv file) method.

Re: [ovirt-users] FC QLogic question

2014-09-12 Thread Bill Dossett
Sorry for delay in replying on this, I got pulled into some urgent meetings at
the end of the day.

Regarding the questions below,

Yes under the H/W tab my QLogic cards are listed. Looks like I have two
different models of cards, which could be, I think I acquired them off ebay and
then got another one later for redundancy.

WWNN and WWPNs are listed.

Miultipath -ll lists all my LUNs, multipathing is set to RR... not sure if
that could be problem as the SAN I am using (old EMC/DGC CX200) is active
passive and I would assume it would be MRU...

Hope this helps, still no LUNs showing up in my Engine.

Thanks again for your help.

Bill

Indeed, sorry for that.

 lsscsi does list all of the LUNs... so that's working!
Great!

 But nothing in ovirt engine when I try to add a storage domain.
Please check back in ovirt engine, with Hosts / Hardware info. You should see
the adapter there, along with WWN's ect.

I am not quite sure, but AFAIK the node uses dm-multipath by default (for iscsi
multipathing). So what does:
# multipath -ll
list?

 Thanks again, I guess I will try and get a bit further with the installs I

 Never mind!
  I was wondering and thought the message may be irrelevant. But yes,
 it doesn't appear to be working. When I try to add a FC storage
 domain, no hosts are showing in the drop down box of hosts. I have
 loaded the latests ovirtnode (3.4.something...) on two hosts now and
 neither are working.
 Lets first try to isolate your FC issure. So you are using the latest
 ovirt-node? EL6? Keep in mind, the kernel is standard Linux and therefore
 should support Qlogic adapters out of the box (IMHO they are the best
 supported HBAs in Linux).
 Please try a:
 # lsmod  | grep qxl
 to see whatever the qxl module is loaded. Keep in mind you can run into
 problems with other conrollers in your host, though I only had this with LSI
 SAS / FC controllers so far.

 Further check on the FC switch if the N port is logged in and the zoning is
 correct.

 Finally, check with
 # lsscsi
 if you can see the luns.

 Also having a lot of issues with configuring the network. I
 configure an interface I can ping it, but it shows as unconfigured...
 on one host I have added it to the manager and I see the interfaces
 anyway, but on the second host I configure the eth0, I can ping it,
 it added to the ovirt engine but it shows no NICs. Should I be using an
 earlier version maybe?

 thanks again and best regards.

Re: [ovirt-users] Fwd: RE: FC QLogic question

2014-09-12 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

Sorry, I got waylaid at the end of yesterday - catching up... (sorry for
length of thread now as well, but would like to get to the bottom of this)

Have seen posts about ovirt-node... I personally like the idea and hope that it
continues to develop. Having to load a Linux distro up and then put ovirt
hypervisor on it is more work and then you need to worry about upgrading the
linux distro and ovirt and suddenly ovirt doesn't run on the distro you have
and you start over. IMHO anyway.

All of the LUN names are listed in /dev/mapper

/etc/multipath.conf is thus

# RHEV REVISION 1.0

defaults {
polling_interval5
getuid_callout  /sbin/scsi_id --whitelisted --replace-whitespace
--device=/dev/%n
no_path_retry   fail
user_friendly_names no
flush_on_last_del   yes
fast_io_fail_tmo5
dev_loss_tmo30
max_fds 4096
}

devices {
device {
vendor  HITACHI
product DF.*
getuid_callout  /sbin/scsi_id --whitelisted --replace-whitespace
--device=/dev/%n
}
device {
vendor  COMPELNT
product Compellent Vol
no_path_retry   fail
}
}

But on the multipath -ll round robin is enabled...

I can't see how the firmware missing can be a problem if all my disks are
appearing on node. Some cards don't need to be flashed, they can be if needed
but if my LUNs are appearing, then I assume it is working.

Sorry, I am very new to node and not much experience with FC under Linux, so
trying to get up to speed on commands...

Which ovirt am Iusing? Not sure what you want back, uname -a yields
2.6.32-431.3.1.el6.x86_6

The iso I used is ovirt-node-iso-3.4-20140423.0.el6.iso from the
releases/stable/iso folder - I am fairly sure, there are two ISOs there.
Unfortunately I am not in the office today and can't get to the desktop where I
burned the ISOs from...

Thanks
Bill

Could be as simple as flipping a sanlock related selinux boolean.

A quick test would be to boot in permissive mode.

So, I am thinking maybe different firmware levels on these cards and the first
one for IBM systems has different firmware? As it seems to be throwing more
errors. Should I try to add the firmware? And if so I know it goes in
/lib/firmware but then the boot image needs to be updated I think and I don’t
know how to do that… or am I barking up the wrong tree.

Thanks again for the help.

This could also be an selinux issue with FC on the node, I've hit that one
before.
Especially since the luns do show up with multipath -ll
Could be as simple as flipping a sanlock related selinux boolean.

A quick test would be to boot in permissive mode.
See http://www.ovirt.org/Node_Troubleshooting#SELinux for some more information.

[ovirt-users] FC QLogic question

2014-09-11 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi,

I seem to have run into a problem setting up ovirt with Fibre Channel storage.

I have a 2MBs SAN and qlogic cards in the nodes. I used this same setup with
RHEV about 6 months ago and it just worked, storage was there no problems. Now
booting with ovirtnode distro, I am seeing

Sep  9 08:01:27 localhost kernel: qla2xxx [:0c:00.0]-0091:1: Firmware
images can be retrieved from: http://ldriver.qlogic.com/firmware/.
Sep  9 08:01:27 localhost kernel: scsi1 : qla2xxx
Sep  9 08:01:27 localhost kernel: qla2xxx [:0c:00.0]-00fb:1: QLogic QLE2460
- QLogic 4GB FC Single-Port PCI-E HBA for IBM System x.
Sep  9 08:01:27 localhost kernel: qla2xxx [:0c:00.0]-00fc:1: ISP2432: PCIe
(2.5GT/s x4) @ :0c:00.0 hdma+ host#=1 fw=4.00.26 (2).
Sep  9 08:01:27 localhost kernel: ata_piix :00:1f.1: PCI INT A - GSI 16
(level, low) - IRQ 16

I have googled the firmware error and it says some cards need a firmware flash
and some don't. These are pretty standard HBAs so I would think they would be
supported out of the box, but maybe not. Looking at trying to add the firmware
looked kind of complex - if I need to do this, does anyone know of a nice and
easy howto guide on this. I'm just getting started with ovirt and appreciate
any help

Thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] FC QLogic question

2014-09-11 Thread Bill Dossett
Thanks for responding Daniel. I was wondering and thought the message may be
irrelevant. But yes, it doesn’t appear to be working. When I try to add a FC
storage domain, no hosts are showing in the drop down box of hosts. I have
loaded the latests ovirtnode (3.4.something…) on two hosts now and neither are
working. Also having a lot of issues with configuring the network. I
configure an interface I can ping it, but it shows as unconfigured… on one host
I have added it to the manager and I see the interfaces anyway, but on the
second host I configure the eth0, I can ping it, it added to the ovirt engine
but it shows no NICs. Should I be using an earlier version maybe?

thanks again and best regards.

Re: [ovirt-users] FC QLogic question

2014-09-11 Thread Bill Dossett
I'm guessing my problems are to do with using the ovirt node hypervisor install
from the ovirt web site to boot and configure from. I'm going to download
CentOS 6.5 and setup that up and then put ovirt on top of it. I have used
CentOS on these systems before and they were fine using the FC SAN. I get the
feeling that NFS and iSCSI support is probably fine, but I the FC support may
not be so good, well that's my guess anyway.

Thanks again

[ovirt-users] Fwd: FC QLogic question

2014-09-11 Thread Bill Dossett

 Hi Daniel,

 I did a lsmod | grep qxl and it returned nothing... did you perhaps mean
 qla?

 [root@ovirt141 ~]# lsmod | grep qla
 qla2xxx   466573  56

 I think that is the one

 lsscsi does list all of the LUNs... so that's working!

 But nothing in ovirt engine when I try to add a storage domain.

 Thanks again, I guess I will try and get a bit further with the installs I
 have...

 Bill

I configure

[ovirt-users] Question on network and boding I think!

2014-09-10 Thread Bill Dossett
Hi - I am a complete newb at Ovirt, but have setup my Ovirt manager and a host
and connected them together.

I am basically looking to replicate in my lab with Ovirt what a simple VMware
installation is doing.

I would like a single network or in vmware terms a vswitch, with two network
cards in the node, both connected to trunked ports so that I can create port
groups with different vlans, one for management, and one for VMs and possibly a
DMZ vlan.

I have tried bonding the network interfaces, but there is also a bridge option
and I don't know what that does. I have read the ovirt docs on bonded
interfaces and they are a little bit terse to actually get me started on this.

If there is a better guide, or simple explanation to get me over this hurdle I
would appreciate it. Sorry for all the vmware terms as well, but I have worked
with vmware for many years and it's the only virtual environment I know really
well - but with their pricing models, I really need to start looking around now!

Thanks very much!

Hi, thanks for the response.. I have only worked with the GUI on the host so
far, but I am will watch this and also the previous posters pointer - I will
obviously have to start working with the hosts and config files sooner or later
and I have worked with Linux for many years, so should be too hard to get
rolling, thanks again.
