[USMA:54265] RE: FPLA and UPLR Inspectors

2014-08-05 Thread Martin Vlietstra
Hi Gene,

Given the on-going battle of state-vs-federal battles and the way in which
the federal government has neglected its duty to control weights and
measures, it would not surprise me to see that each state has its own system
of regulation. May I suggest that you visit
http://www.bipm.org/en/cipm-mra/.

Jim (Frysinger),

Thanks for your comments on your personsal experiences with markeding
regulators.

It is good that farmers are allowed to sell at least some of their *fresh
products*, labeled only in SI Units.

As with eggs, I assume that private sales of meat and poultry are more
tightly regulated for public health reasons, whatever the units of
masurement used on their labels..

Recently, here in Illinois, regulation of baked goods has been relaxed.
Certified kitchens are no longer required. Farmers' Markets are loaded with
unregulated baked goods.

Gene,

I imagine that most of the inspectors are all state-level employees.

I interacted with the Tennessee office controlling labels, weights, and
measures several years ago. I found that I could indeed sell produce at
farmers' markets solely in metric units, should I choose to do so. My scale,
if I used one, required certification and that, too, could be done in metric
units. Unfortunately, selling fresh eggs or produced food products requires
a certified kitchen and training and a certification examination for the
operator. It's just too darned expensive to do here just for fun.

Why don't you call your state's office of weights and measures. Your
Illinois Secretary of State could tell you what that office is called in
Illinois and where it fits in the state government hierarchy.

Congratulations on your granddaughter. I am sure that she is worth her weight

My older son Evan had an It's a Boy! sticker on his Kaiser Hospital

have no idea what that is in colonial units because I never needed to know. I

Congratulations, Grandpa! Your daughter and granddaughter are the very

According to Reuters, in the U.S. in 2005 the average birth weight was
3389 g so Willow is merely a bit above average in mass.

[USMA:54270] LC 44

2014-08-05 Thread contact

Anna Staver. Thank you for talking with me this morning and for
considering this important Oregon story. I hope you were able to reach
Representative Denyc Boles by phone for comment concerning the meeting she
and I had earlier this morning. Attached is the legislation (LC 44) that
you and I discussed moments ago at the Statesman Journal News window. Below
you will find some back-and-forth email messages that may be useful to you
as a reporter. I think the Statesman Journal would benefit from running
this story because it could potentially generate much discussion. The
United States Metric Association www.metric.org is a good resource for
background on the American effort to complete our national metrication.

Edward, Yes. I am glad I met a pro-SI science teacher during
parent-teacher conferences several months ago. Mr Whatley is a great
asset in our effort. I also plan to bring along a print-out of a recent
NBC News article about Accidental Overdose: Parents are terrible at
measuring kids' meds. I imagine it might be difficult to come up with a
persuasive argument because many Americans are so stubbornly opposed to
getting rid of familiar measures, but perhaps this article might help
too. I appreciate your kind words and positive feedback.

Hey, everyone --

The facts are in. The science is definitive. The question is no longer whether
climate change is happening, but whether we can afford not to act.

In the western United States, changes in our climate are fueling wildfire
seasons that are longer and more intense -- putting people, communities, and
businesses at risk.

As we’re seeing right now, wildfires unquestionably have devastating impacts on
the lives of many Americans. This weekend, California declared a state of
emergency as two major wildfires scorched acres of land, threatening towns and
forcing many to evacuate. These are just two of the 14 fires that are currently
burning throughout the state.

Make no mistake: The cost of inaction on wildfires and climate change is too
high a price for Americans to pay, particularly when we have a chance to
address this right now.

exactly why this is a problem that we must meet head-on -- and pass it along to

As a new report from the Council of Economic Advisors points out, the
consequences of climate change reach beyond our environment. The impacts of
climate change threaten our homes, our health, and our economic prosperity. In
fact, delaying action for a decade would increase the cost of responding to
climate change by 40 percent.

President Obama has been taking action on all fronts to reduce the harmful
greenhouse gas emissions that are warming our planet, to make our communities
more resilient to climate impacts, and to take the lead on the international
stage. In June, he announced a competition to help Americans build a stronger
capacity to protect their homes and neighborhoods from natural disasters.

If the question is, Do we protect the lives, the economy, and the future of
the American people?, the answer should always be a resounding yes.

Check out the President's action plan to learn more about what we can do to
take the lead on addressing global climate change:

[USMA:54273] 500 grams of ground beef

2014-08-05 Thread Pierre Abbat
I went to Earth Fare yesterday (the same place I got the livers back in March)
and noticed that they had grass-fed ground beef from Australia for less than
the local ground beef, which didn't make sense. So I asked for 500 g of ground
beef, and as before, they tried to convert it to ounces for a scale that
weighs in pounds. I quipped It's from Australia, it has to be metric! But
this time she admitted that often (I think it was a few times a week) someone,
often a European, comes in and asks for so many grams of something, and they
should be better prepared. She's going to ask the manager to get a metric
scale. I asked her to also get a metric scale for the produce section. (The
scale in the bulk herb section already has a metric scale.)

It's 555 g including the bag.
