Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU v6.0 SSO with NDMP?

2005-11-02 Thread Tim Hoke
Dan, I believe you are using what's called "remote ndmp" (at least I
think that's what it's called). The config you describe is definitely
a limitation in pre-6.0. If you upgrade to 6.0 and assuming you can
actually get your NDMP Filer and your Master server to see the tape
drive (SAN connection or even shared SCSI), you would then be able to
make use of SSO with NDMP.

Ok so I am
biased here!

I would go
with 6.0, the changes are significant enough there is no need to go through all
of the 5.x issues, and get used to how to manage that environment only to
upgrade in a year or so to 6.x and learn all its new features.  Start with 6.0
and learn it from the start and you won’t be as confused later.  Also, I
must say for a .0 release that 6.0 appears to be stable.  Now with that said,
only empirical data from sustained field use will tell the whole story.

RE: [Veritas-bu] error code 134

2005-11-02 Thread Rockey Reed
The 134 error can be reduced if not eliminated by ensuring the shared
memory of the NBU server is set properly. Also, you may notice 134 when
there is no storage unit readily available, meaning in use by another
backup/restore job when the backup starts; however, this should go away
when the resource becomes available. I have noticed that the if the job
opens without a resource available and then the start window closes
before the resource becomes available you will get the 134 error instead
of the expected 196. HTH

very slowly like most hosts under those conditions, this one just

[Veritas-bu] Cumalitive Incremental Backup Problems

2005-11-02 Thread Lewick, Taylor
Title: Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup 5.x or Netbackup 6.x

I have been noticing some strange/bad
behavior with our main file server backups, a 2 node active/passive windows
2003 cluster.

We are running weekly full backups on the
weekends, and the past few weeks full are all successful.

During the week we are running cumulative incrementals
and I have noticed that the incrementals are as big or nearly as big as the fulls.
We checked the archive bits and they are not set, and the timestamps of the
files are not being modified every night.

Has anyone seen this type of behavior
before with cumulative incrementals?

We are currently at 4.5 FP 8 slated to
upgrade to 5.1 next month, client on the cluster is FP6.

Thanks,
Taylor

Ok... We're trying to get an Oracle agent going on a windows system. It
manages to connect to the backup server, a channel is allocated tape mounted
and positioned, but no data is delivered. It is recognizing the netbackup
server and the server is accepting it, so it's not a communication problem.

Going RMAN to disk on the server works fine so it's not that RMAN is
incapable of sending data to a backup piece.

Any ideas on what might be the problem? Anybody seen similar problems

You only use that parameter for 3.4. Once 4.5 FP3 came out that parameter is

[Veritas-bu] RMAN + netbackup + windows

2005-11-02 Thread Charles Ballowe
Ok... We're trying to get an Oracle agent going on a windows system.
It manages to connect to the backup server, a channel is allocated
tape mounted and positioned, but no data is delivered. It is
recognizing the netbackup server and the server is accepting it, so
it's not a communication problem.

Going RMAN to disk on the server works fine so it's not that RMAN is
incapable of sending data to a backup piece.

Any ideas on what might be the problem? Anybody seen similar problems before?

Actually, the general rule is never UPGRADE to a new release until MP1

I've seen it only once before -- someone
left a backup/archive/restore window open over the weekend (we run on
Win2K3), and some of the NBU services went a little haywire.  We rebooted
the system, and it went back to normal.  If you're running out of a UNIX
flavor, there might be some runaway processes that you need to kill (say,
something attached to your tape drive or network services).

This is about to drive me crazy so hopefully someone has
seen this before. We are getting error code 134 (unable
to process request because the server resources are busy). I
cannot tell if this is the server or the network.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello:

Was wondering if anybody can confirm whether dynamic drive sharing via SSO &
NDMP functionality is available in the NBU 6.0 GA release. Las t I heard was
that this functionality would not be available until MP1 was released for 6.0.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

Re: [Veritas-bu] IBM P-series + Linux + NetBackup = ???

2005-11-02 Thread Keith Farrar

Well... we canceled plans this spring for a pair of IBM pSeries machines
running SLES 9 for lack of NetBackup support in that combination (as I told
Michael Adams, Symantec manager for NetBackup Product Marketing, at the
Symantec booth at Linux World San Francisco).

Symantec didn't lose a sale (we were unwilling to change backup platforms),
but we bought a pair of IBM Xeon xSeries boxes (with SLES 9). We probably
won't buy ANY pSeries servers until there is support for NetBackup on that
platform.

If you are talking about backup_exit_notify that can be done to check
your limit of failures before a message is sent.

If your talking about a summary report, that is also possible.

I have built several scripts for both Solaris and Windows that you might
find useful. They are located at http://www.gurski.com/netbackup.php

[Veritas-bu] exchange restore from command line

2005-11-02 Thread Paul Keating
Title: Message

When you do a
restore of an SG from the GUI, you get the screen where you can select whether
to mount, commit, etc, after the restore, as well as a box to specify "temporary
location for log and patch files"

as you might know,
there's a file placed in this directory when you do the "full" restore that must
exist in order to be able to apply an incremental at a later
time.
then when you do the
incremental later, you have to spec the same dir as you specified for the
full.

So, looking at the
man page, for bprestore, and the "commands for unix" manual, I can't find an
option to specify this target temp directory on the command
line.

I can do a full
restore from the command line  (without a mount and commit) but if I later
want to apply an incremental on top of that full (from the GUI) I don't know
where to point the restore WRT this temp dir.

If you're wondering
why i need to do this..
After the FULL
backups finish on the weekend, I do a full restore of the exchange backup to a
second server (from command line, fired off by a cron job).with NO mount or
commit.this restore is then staged and if a restore is needed at a later
date, the exchange admins can force a mount/commit of this full, OR I can apply
an incremental on top of the full, and mount and commit
that.

problem is, without
knowing/specifying where the CLI restore put the temp log/patch files, I can't
apply the incremental.

Paul

Hello,

I have a client on backups called clientX, I need to find
all of the tapes clientX has backed up (in particular with *infinity
retention), what is the easiest way to do this?

I will look in the manual shortly but I am currently caught
up with a few things at the moment.

Going to the GUI in UNIX and selecting different dates &
previewing gives me the tape ID’s for each date but this would be a
tedious and repetitive task.

Anyone know the command off the top of his or her head?

Thanks,

Good luck with that.  I have an HP PA-RISC
running Debian Linux and don’t have an NB client for it either.   Since
most folks doing Linux are on x86 I guess NB doesn’t see the market.
Also of course IBM probably doesn’t offer them much help since they sell
their own backup solution.

im kind of with the (former) big V on this... we are
an ISV and we are running SLES 8/9 on s390 and have no
customers for that platform!!! (at least there is a NB
client for that). since we run other things on the
s390, its not much of a big deal to have the gear
around (with paying customers).

not trying to be a goober, just seeing why they would
not be very interested in doing it until the demand
increases considerably.

from the customer lines we hear from, 64bit on
amd64/emt64 is where the biggest push is. we havent
heard any demands for linux/ppc. id rather see some
clients for the ibm midrange and up gear, however that
is a pretty tough space to crack.

are you running linux LPARed?

[Veritas-bu] Custom Reporting in NB?

My question is rather simple. Is it possible to filter the generated
e-mail backup reports so that only abnormal incidents are mailed?
When people get used to seeing a dozen reports each morning, they
tend to stop paying attention to exceptions. We're currently running

RE: [Veritas-bu] What criteria is used to determine a incremental ??

2005-11-02 Thread Mark . Donaldson
It uses mtime by default:

from the SAG for v5.1 pp 152-153:

When NetBackup reads the data for a file that is included in a backup, it
does not affect the file modification time, but does affect the access time
of the file. For this reason, NetBackup saves the atime and mtime of the
file prior to reading the file, and (by default) resets the atime and mtime
using the utime(2) system call. By doing it this way, NetBackup does not
cause problems for storage migration products or administrator scripts that
are utilizing file access times (atime) as criteria for their operations.
While this benefit is obvious, a side effect is that it does update the
ctime of the file.

As an option to a NetBackup configuration, customers can choose to have
NetBackup not reset the access time of the file after it reads a file.
Additionally, customers can choose to have NetBackup use the ctime of the
file, in addition to the mtime, when determining what files to back up in an
incremental. Normally, these two options are used together, but there may be
sites which want to use one without the other. By default, NetBackup uses
only the mtime of the file to determine what files and directories to back
up.

When a file is moved from one location to another, the ctime of the file
changes, but the mtime remains unchanged. If NetBackup is only using the
file modification time (mtime) to determine files due to be backed up during
an incremental backup, it will not detect these moved files. For sites where
this is an issue, the ctime should also be used (if possible) to determine
files due to be included in an incremental backup, using the bp.conf
attributes USE_CTIME_FOR_INCREMENTALS and DO_NOT_RESET_FILE_ACCESS_TIME.

When a directory is moved from one location to another, the ctime of the
directory changes, but the mtime remains unchanged. Neither the mtime nor
the ctime are changed for the files or directories within the moved
directory. Using file timestamps, there is no reliable method for
determining that files within a moved directory need to be included in an
incremental backup.

In either case, these moved files and directories are included in subsequent
full backups.

sensitive to simple permissions/ownership changes.

Time to play with my test policy.

Should this not be ctime? In my experience (Linux) mtime only changes on
a change of the file (eg, data), while ctime also changes when the
rights or owner change.

Should this not be ctime? In my experience (Linux) mtime only changes on
a change of the file (eg, data), while ctime also changes when the
rights or owner change.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Capturing bpmedialist's command output ?

2005-11-02 Thread Charles Ballowe
depending on what you're doing, you may just want the output of
"bpmedialist -summary".

If you're getting your list of media from vmquery - maybe do it by
pool instead of just listing all media - you won't have an expiration
date on scratch tapes etc.

Also -- I believe you're looking at capturing stderr, not stdout. You
can have stderr go into stdout if you do:

command 2>&1

If you just want to capture stderr to a file or get rid of it:

command 2> file
(file is often /dev/null)

There's also probably a better method than calling bemedialist in your
inner loop, like capturing to a file without the -m $MEDIA_ID and
processing that for each media you want.

Re: Antw: [Veritas-bu] Multiplexing / Streaming

2005-11-02 Thread Dave Markham

I think you may have misunderstood multiplexing and streaming.

Multiplexing as far as i understand it means you can write multiple jobs
from a schedule to the same storage unit assuming mpx values are set
correctly per drive etc. Multi streaming is creating a separate job for
different volumes on an individual server within that policy. You then
need to have the correct amount of jobs per client set and allow
multiple data streams on the policy.

This can be used for eg to backup / and /opt/openv if they are on
separate disks. There can be issues with disk thrashing if you have new
streams on unix servers from the same disk.

I think you only really need deal with multiplexing here.

Hope that helps

Hi can I have some opinions please?
I am deeply concerned about backup speeds, and trying to get my head around
streaming and multiplexing.

I have 3 available tape drives and I have 2 policies that I intend to run
tonight. I want both policies to use the available drives where possible.

I have told NBU I have 5 drives available - 2 are offline at the moment, but
3 are readily there.

The 1st policy will start at 6pm and contains 3 streams

The 2nd Policy starts at 7pm and contains 3 streams.

Both of the policies both state "Media Multiplexing" is set for 3

NBU Master Storage Unit is set for "Max Multiplexing per drive" is 6.

Does this sound right or have I missed the point?

Thank you for any input!

Simon

[Veritas-bu] RE: Is Netbackup 5.1 or 6.0 supported on EM64T 64-bit processors?

2005-11-02 Thread Wilson, Paul
Hi all,
I have a customer looking to run Netbackup Enterprise server
/clients on a 64-bit Windows 2003 platform based on Extended Memory 64
(EM64T) Intel processors rather than Itanium 64-bit processors.

>From reading the latest release notes, it appears that this is supported
only if the processors are run in 'legacy' 32-bit mode with 32-bit
netbackup binaries, whereas on Itanium 64-bit it is supported in 64-bit
mode. Can any one please confirm if this is the case?

Any one aware of roadmap / plans for qualifying netbackup with EM64-bit
processors?

Thanks in advance

Best Regards

[Veritas-bu] Exchange backups

2005-11-02 Thread Hindle, Greg
Title: Exchange backups

Nbu 5.0 mp3 Solaris 9

We have an L700 with around 12 sdlt 320 drives installed. I am trying to get the best performance when backing up exchange mailbox databases. We want to decrease the time required to back up our exchange servers. We have multiplexing set to 8 and do Not have allow multiple data streams checked. Would we get better performance by turning this option on? Would multiple data streams using the exchange agent to backup the mailbox database be useful?

Hi Richard

Are you sure?
Here's the command in NBU 5.x

bpmedia -help

bpmedia:
  -freeze|-unfreeze|-suspend|-unsuspend -m [-h ] [-v]
  -movedb -m -newserver [-oldserver ] [-v]

Regards,
Jerome

>>> "Richard Hellier" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 02.11.2005 11:39:56 >>>
Jerome,
Minor correction!

Bpmedia takes the "-ev" flag to signify media not the "-m".

I guess this is a useful distinction but it's a faff to have to keep in mind
when writing scripts!

Cheers,

Richard.

this:

VARIABLE=$(bpmedialist -mlist -U -m $MEDIA_ID|tail +7|\awk '{print $2}'|sed

Unfortunately, some tapes aren't in DB and produce no output in $VARIABLE
BUT they send this message in STDOUT like follow :
"requested media id was not found in NB media database and/or MM volume

Which commands or functions can I use to capturing the STDOUT value?
