[Veritas-bu] SSO Tuning
I’m trying to setup an HP-UX 9000 as a media server. I have visibility to my drive through the fabric and can backup my server to itself, but I’m getting some slow thru put. Are there any kernel params (share memory) setting which need to be set? What about max buffer settings? I know I should be getting more than 4megs per second from this server to the tape drives. I have a Sun system doing the same thing at it gets 30-35 megs per second. Thanks in advance for any advice. Scott
Re: [Veritas-bu] Decommission
On UNIX you would need to remove the entries from /usr/openv/volmgr/vm.conf for each corresponding server. Looking (on our master) like this: - SERVER = mediasvr1.lbl.gov DEVICE_HOST = mediasvr1.lbl.gov KNOWN = mediasvr1.lbl.gov - I have one set for each media server. Not sure on Windows. Perhaps check out: C:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr (??) for a vm.conf file? You do have to restart the whole mess if you change the vm.conf file for the changes to take effect. HTH --Chris I have a Windows 2003 media server that I want to decommission. The media server has some issues; hence I can no longer backup the server using its own storage-unit, I am now using the Master servers storage unit. I've decommissioned media servers before, but never one in this state. My main concern here is moving the media or how to handle the media in case it's needed at some future point in time. When I run the bpmedia -bpmove command the I get an error message that the media is not found in the DB; no doubt due to issues with the media server. I don't own the media server so I cannot fix; a political thing. Any recommendations or ramifications? Again my focus is to move the media, then decommission the media server. RE: [Veritas-bu] Decommission
Can you do a bprecover to a different server then move the media from there? Either that, or set the master server up as the alternate restore server for that media server. It should then be able to do restores, but it might leave you with some issues with expiring the images. Good luck. I have a very similar question. I've got a Solaris 2.8 Master and a Solaris 2.8 Media Server running 4.5GA. The Master Server lists (in the GUI) two other Media Servers that no longer exist. How do I remove them?! Apparently they've been gone for a LONG time, so I'm not as much worried about media on them as I just want to clean house. That's fantastic. So I should probably do frequency based cleaning then until I go to NBU 6.0? The drives seem to need cleaning after about 500 or 600 hours of use. Those versions of netbackup only recognize two of the 48 or so possible flags set on the tapealert log page, clean now and clean periodic. The light on the front of the drive could get set for who knows how many of the other possibilities (ask ADIC or IBM). Also, the tapealert log page is a 'read and clear' log page, meaning if something (the library) reads it before netbackup then netbackup will never see that the flag was set, and take no action. Netbackup 6.x will tell you which flag was set, and take action on many of them. [Veritas-bu] weird windows client issue (only seen on laptops)
Hi, So, this following description is a real issue for us presently. We are starting to see a rash of laptop users that have the same symptoms: - The client will have been working for some time and then suddenly stop backing up. - De-installing and re-installing the NBU 5.1MP3 client does not help. - Sometimes it appears that uninstalling the XP patches to roll back to SP2 and then install the backup client and then the SP3 and 4 will work temporarily...but almost all of the laptops have reverted to stop working shortly thereafter once again. - This only happens with laptops, and less than 2% of our Windows XP user-base...we have about 283 Windows and similar Mac and Unix amounts. No one has this problem but laptops, and only a select few of themironically, though, all of our division director and higher personnel. If that is not Murphy at work. - Local to the laptops (all running XP SP4 with 5.1MP3 NBU client) everything looks normal * netstat -an shows 13782 in a LISTENING state. * firewall rules allow the ports (and work on the 200+ desktop Windows systems we back up). * we have uninstalled and disabled all other software for anti-virus, anti-spyware and any other network-based applications to no effect. * Adding 127.0.0.1 to the server list and then from the local box telneting to 127.0.0.1 13782 does get the proper hanging state we see on other systems. * Enabling logging brings out bpcd logs that look like this: - 16:04:32.302 [3576.3592] <2> logconnections: getsockname(-1) failed: 10038 16:04:32.302 [3576.3592] <16> bpcd setup_sockopts: setsockopt 1 failed: h_errno 10038 16:04:32.302 [3576.3592] <2> bpcd main: setup_sockopts complete 16:04:32.302 [3576.3592] <2> vauth_acceptor: ..\libvlibs\vauth_comm.c.326: Function failed: 17 0x0011 16:04:32.302 [3576.3592] <16> bpcd main: authentication failed: 17 16:04:36.117 [2624.2760] <2> bpcd main: offset to GMT 28800 16:04:36.117 [2624.2760] <2> bpcd main: Got socket for input -1 -- - From the server we see a myriad of errors, ranging from 41 (net timeout) to 58 (auth issues) from these machines. * The client does not 'bpdir' from the server. * telnet $client 13782 does not hang and the connection is immediately closed. * The client does ping from the server. * The clientnames and servernames match on both client and server Any thoughts would be most welcome. Anyone else seen this kind of behavior? TIA! --Chris ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

Re: [Veritas-bu] How to use tar command available in netbackup
This is documented - either in a technote or in the troubleshooting guide. Having to skip past a file by using the 'mt' command rings a bell. I have got some problems with my tape library and I want to check if I can restore the old tapes with "tar" command directly instead of using the Veritas netbackup since I will need to wait till the tape drives are replaced. I have tried "tar -tvf /dev/rmt/0cb" but get following error. Blocksize = 2 records Hmm, this doesn't look like a tar archive. Skipping to next file header... Any help will be appreciated. I think the verbose version of bpimagelist gives information about file numbers on tape for specific backups, although I seem to remember it is slightly misleading (do you have to substract 1, maybe to allow for the label? Something like that; I think you are going to have to experiment a bit. Re: [Veritas-bu] windows bpstart and bpend
Hi Karl I have solved this on NBU3.4-5.1 by using lock-files The first bpstart_notify script makes a .started and a ..running the other bpstart_notify scripts makes a ..running the bpend_notify scripts removes ..running and checks if there is any ..running files left. If not it removes .started Also check the SAG for 6.0 I think there was something about a new main- stream feature for multi-stream backups in 6.0 Regards Michael On Thu, 2 Mar 2006 16:16:25 -0600, Karl.Rossing wrote > I'm running NB 6.0MP1 > > much like Solaris, bpend and bpstart run with each stream. > > How can i get them to run only once per backup. > > Thanks > Karl -- Cybercity Webhosting (http://www.cybercity.dk) ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
