RE: [Veritas-bu] Shortening Timeouts
Hi Jason In a nice real world, if the server was up, then the timeouts would take affect. As you mentioned this was an early power down - what was the backup server doing - was there tapes in the robotic library? Did the robot go down as well? From experience, if a power outage occurs, that was not planned, and once Netbackup sorts itself out, it may fail with an alternative status code. But it depends on your setup really. Was anything logged in the client. Is your master set to retry backups. Was there other error status codes before it finally ended with a code? Any info may help :-) Regards Simon Weaver 3rd Line Technical Support Windows Domain Administrator EADS Astrium Limited, B32AA IM (DCS) Anchorage Road, Portsmouth, PO3 5PU Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Brooks, Jason [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 10 May 2006 19:06 To: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: [Veritas-bu] Shortening Timeouts Last night, we had some of our servers powered down for some early morning power maintenance. Although I am a *strong* Linux advocate and a Red Hat Certified Engineer, I would advise that you think long and hard about this decision. Symantec has not yet been able to demonstrate any willingness to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux as an enterprise platform. Fact: NetBackup 6.5, targeted for release in February, 2007, will drop support for RHEL 3. RHEL 3 started shipping in October, 2003 and will be supported by Red Hat through October, 2010. Symantec will cut you off with its current release nearly 4 years before Red Hat stops supporting the OS. On the other hand, Windows 2000, which was released 2 1/2 years earlier than RHEL 3, will still be supported by NetBackup 6.5. Additionally, mainstream support for Win2K server has already ended and full support will end from Microsoft *before* RHEL 3 support ends. This should show you where Symantec's priorities lie. Fact: Symantec Brightmail is not available for RHEL 4 so if you're deploying today, you have to deploy on RHEL 3. One Symantec enterprise product will soon be unable to back up another Symantec enterprise product. RHEL 4 has been out for over a year and still Symantec hasn't started supporting it. I just searched the support site for the system requirements in case my local office was wrong, and RHEL 4 still does not seem to be supported. Fact: NOM on Linux. Nope, it doesn't exist. Windows or Solaris only. Symantec doesn't seem to get it. I'm turning blue in the face trying to explain this to my local office. I know that there are Symantec folks on this list - feel free to pass this on. Symantec's actions do not go without notice. I've been asked by my management why we're not using Linux for NetBackup and I bluntly told them that Symantec can't be trusted to support the platform as it should be trusted. We recently replaced our master and one of our media servers and stuck with Solaris. We spent a lot more money but at least I know it will work. Enough rambling. This reseller is very knowledgeable with NetBackup and does consulting too so they see a lot of sites. We were trying to decide if we should upgrade the upgrades in our current L700 or replace the library with an SL500. Their experience so far shows that the SL500 is fairly reliable. We crunched some numbers and jointly decided that staying with the L700 is the right answer for us - our L700 has been absolutely rock solid. I talked to a Quantum SE the other day who said that the SL500 does have alignment issues and we should look at the Quantum libraries, but he's a wee bit biased :-). I expect the L700 libraries will be around for a while yet - even if they're decprecated soon, there are a lot of them out in the field so they'll be supported for a long time. The relevant Symantec publication on this topic seems to be p.3-4 of the NetBackup 6 OS Supportability Matrix, found here: http://ftp.support.veritas.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/278064.pdf In particular, references to RH 3 include a footnote that reads, Next major release following NetBackup 6.0 will not support this OS Version. This status could change if market and/or vendor support positions change. For the past 8 years that I've been using NBU and reading these supportability statements, the phrase next major release has consistently referred to the next major version number. i.e., NetBackup 7.0 (or NBU 8, or NBU 2008, or whatever TPTB decide to call it). So I'm quite confident that these questions don't apply to 6.5. In my experience, NBU has been good about fully supporting an OS revision for AT LEAST as long as the OS vendor is still providing general fixes for that version. For RH3, I think that will be true until November of this year. Re: [Veritas-bu] Symantec and Linux support
From that link it shows that RedHat's support position boils down to 3 years of helping people migrate TO a particular release and 4 years of migrating FROM that release. Basically, after 3 years, they won't officially help you deploy a new system on that release. Same with Symantec. New deployments of the latest NetBackup Server on a 3 year old RedHat release don't make a lot of sense. I'm sure the client will still work and if it doesn't you can run the older client and still get support. Regardless of the official position now, there are a ton of people using RHEL 3, just like Solaris 8. Both face the same issue in the next major NetBackup release. Austin On 5/11/06, Rob Worman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: FYI on this topic of NBU support and RedHat 3 in particular... Ed, you wrote that: snip Fact: NetBackup 6.5, targeted for release in February, 2007, will drop support for RHEL 3. /snip I must respectfully disagree with this Fact:. Re: [Veritas-bu] Backups running twice during the backup window
If they are both scheduled by NetBackup, it's probably in your Policy(ies) and Schedule(s) configuration. The most likely scenarios are multiple policies or using a frequency-based schedule where your frequency is 12 hours. If using Calendar-based scheduling, I'll note that the 1500 and 0300 backups are on different days. cheers, wayne Lew, David wrote, in part, on 5/11/2006 6:57 AM: My oracle DB netbackup jobs appearantly have been running twice during its backup window. RE: [Veritas-bu] File listing for Fragment
Mickey, You're right. Easiest way would to be to import the tape set and then restore to another NDMP host however, you may need to know of it came from a EMC or a NetApp box. You can't restore EMC to NetApp and visa versa. Additionally, the backup may have happened in dump or tar. Depending on the platform and depending on the policy settings for the NDMP host. If your restoring from ndmp, once you put the NetBackup fragments back together, you will then have an Ontap compatible dump file, which you can use an Ontap restore command or Solaris ufsdump. I don't see getting around having to restore the entire dumpfile, which is a PITA for those of us use to the ease of single file restore with NetBackup, but is a reality when dealing with ndmp in combination with any 3rd party software. Why go to all this bother? Import all the tapes into NetBackup, then restore the entire qtree to an alternate location using NetBackup. Pick out the files you need and move them back where you need them. That's really the best way to do it. You can create an alternate location to restore with inexpensive storage for less money than you can write the code to do it - and you're still going to need to restore the entire dump file somewhere or write code to dynamically keep track of both the fragment structure and the dump file structure as you parse them in memory somewhere. It sounds like that should be a piece of software worth some $$$. If I'm wrong here, someone please correct me. The TOC you describe (associating fragment to file) is the quick definition of Netbackup's image catalog. You're starting to write the application you've already bought. To answer your question, I think you're going to have to mine the catalog directly for the info you're looking for. Look under the /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/client/timestamp/imagename.f files for the file to frag info. If you're using the binary catalog, you'll have to convert them. -M From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Steve Cashman Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2006 2:53 PM To: Andrew Wilkin Cc: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] File listing for Fragment Try bpimagelist -backupid (backup_id) Steve On 5/5/06, Andrew Wilkin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All, I'm after a away to extract the files that are contained within an individual BackupId that has multiple Fragments (File number on a Tape). [Veritas-bu] Host properties from command line?
Is there a way from the command line on solaris with nbu 4.5 fp3 to get a client list including the version of each netbackup client? I can look under jnbSA and go to host properties-clients and individually click on clients to see their version but any attempts to export this data are crashing jnbSA. I'm looking for something like the output of bpplclients with the version of the client software included.
