Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrade Strategies

2007-05-29 Thread Ed Wilts
The general rule of thumb is to always do as few changes as possible to
minimize the risk of things going seriously wrong. As long as 5.1MP6 is
supported on RHEL 2.1 (I assumed you've checked - I haven't), you're taking
the right approach by upgrading to 5.1MP6 first. Once you have that upgrade
complete, let it stabilize for a while then build up your new system.
There's really no catalog migration - you can rsync the /usr/openv tree to
the RHEL 4 system - shut down the RHEL 2.1 system, change the RHEL 4 system
host name back to what the original system name was, and then re-run the
device configuration setup.

Don't try and change names on your master during your migration - that will
just get you in trouble.

Delete the client from all the policies that it is in and it will be

Hi,

What's the best way to remove a client from NBU client list if the
server has 'died'? It's just a standard LAN client.

[Veritas-bu] Upgrade Strategies

2007-05-29 Thread Sturgis, Grant
Greetings List,

We are running 5.0MP7 on RHEL 2.1 and we want to move to 5.1MP6 on RHEL
4.0 and new hardware.

What should the order of upgrade be? My first inclination would be to
upgrade NBU first to 5.1MP6 and then install new hardware with RHEL 4,
install NBU 5.1MP6 and migrate the catalog. Does that make sense?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Grant

Straight through cable vs crossover? That's kind of a stumper..

I asked our san guy about that, and he tells me that some that he gets that are
one way where they should be the other (and has had to send some back because
the connectors weren't adjustable to swap positions).

I'll admit I know enough about FC to get my backup stuff running, but not much
more. But I'd imagine (guessing, really) that a direct connect would need the
transmit/receive transposed where going through a fc switch wouldn't.

With the emulex fc cards showing up in lspci and not having drives show
up anywhere on the lsscsi, could it be FC switch zoning issues?

You may want to doublecheck the zoning config on your FC switch to make
sure your new media server can see the right drives.

quick way to tell is in /proc/scsi/

If the emulex cards are listed there in one way or another, then I'd
think the drives would be loaded.

as an example, with my qlogics:

Looks like you need to load the driver first? The tape drives are
hooked
up to a fiber mesh/network or directly to the tape drives? If they're

hooked up to a fiber network you need to zone the drives.

If the lpfc driver is available, it would be called "lpfc". Getting a newer
version from the Emulex web site is good idea as you can then also
download the version matching lputil utility for firmware upgrades and HBA
modification.

If you tail your messages file or watch your console when you perform a insmod
lpfc or
modprobe lpfc you can watch it pick up the targets. If this is part of a
fabric, make sure
the correct zoning is in place.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Trouble getting tape drives recognized on Linux Server running SLES9

2007-05-29 Thread Robin Small
With the emulex fc cards showing up in lspci and not having drives show up
anywhere on the lsscsi, could it be FC switch zoning issues?

You may want to doublecheck the zoning config on your FC switch to make sure
your new media server can see the right drives.

Looks like you need to load the driver first? The tape drives are hooked
up to a fiber mesh/network or directly to the tape drives? If they're
hooked up to a fiber network you need to zone the drives.

Hi,

What do you get from "lsscsi" command?

If you run Qlogic HBA you could run "scli" and scan the buses for the drives
to see if the zones are correct.

So go to Emulex's site and find the driver for:

And install it and make sure it loads upon reboot and you should be all

Which kernel (2.4 or 2.6) does SLES9 have?

Some time ago we found a similar issue on our RHEL 3 (2.4 kernel)
servers using Qlogic cards. We use a fibre bridge for the drives here
and recently found that with the 2.6 kernels there is an option that can
be passed into the driver modules for QLA that will make it see all
drives attached to the fibre bridges. Before 2.6 there was no flag to
make it skip gaps so it would see some drives but not others.

Then your SCSI/Fiber card does not see the tape drives. You'd need to
run
lspci or such to see what card you have, load the driver for it and then

make sure the drives are attached correctly.

[Veritas-bu] Trouble getting tape drives recognized on Linux Server running SLES9

2007-05-29 Thread ZIMMER, RANDY K [AG/1000]
All,

I need some pointer on how I get my tape drives recognized by my Linux
server running SLES 9. We are trying to add a Linux server into our
environment as a Media Server and am having difficulty getting the OS to
recognize the tape drives. I have open support call with Novell and

Hi,

What's the best way to remove a client from NBU client list if the
server has 'died'? It's just a standard LAN client.

Re: [Veritas-bu] backup failed with status code 800 NB6.1 in solaris

2007-05-29 Thread Karen Schoenbauer
Could be a few things.

1. Did you use the wizard to configure your drives and storage units?

2. If not start looking at that. You could have configure the drives
as DLT and the tapes to go into the drives as DLT2.
