Hi Simrat
I think if there is a connection problem , error status it would be 58. to 59
netbackup services not running on media server or netbackup software is sunken
and Justin right check bp.conf file both servers ,later check netbackup
services on media server.

Error 59 is connection denied, is it possible your media servers do not have
the master server in the bp.conf file? That is the usual cause of that error.

Hi Pat,

What strategy are you planning for VTL to tape, thats where we had problems.
Vault takes long so you would need to have more physical drives or less data
to be vaulted.

[Veritas-bu] NBU 5.1 and Solaris 10 for intel

2007-08-07 Thread DULLAART, Rob ONL
Hi Group,

I need to take a server in the backup which is an intel-box which runs
on Solaris 10.

It also has an oracle database. My master-server runs with NBU 5.1 MP5.

There seems to be no client version 5.1 for this OS.

There is a version 6. Would this work with NBU 5.1?

The master server always needs to be at the highest version, then the media
servers, and then the clients. You cannot have a v6 client with a v5 master
server.

Re: [Veritas-bu] 5.1 Disk Staging & Vault Duplications

2007-08-07 Thread Paul Keating
You need to set you max backup copies to 3 or higher under host
properties -> master server ->  -> properties -> global
attributes.

also, if you want to create 2 copies, you can do that in the DSSU
properties.
right click the STU, select "change" -> disk staging schedule -> check
multiple copies -> configure, set # of copies to "2", then configure the
volume pool and retention for each copy. you save a ton of time by
writing both at once, then you only need to use Vault to eject the
offsite copy.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] 5.1 Disk Staging & Vault Duplications

Greetings,

I believe i know the answer, but i will see if more experienced
people have delt with this before.

I have a Netbackup 5.1 (MP5)  environment, I have just added a
new disk staging storage unit for Database backups.

I need to get two copies of these backups put onto tape, the
first copy is easy as the DSSU takes care of that ( with the retention
specified in the policy ). I seed to get a second copy made for offsite
with a longer retention.

I have set up a Vault profile for these jobs however when it
goes to duplicate the images it failes with 190, the duplicate log says
skipping ... it already has 2 copies.

Vault is counting the copy on the disk, and the copy made by the
dssu staging back to tape.

Is this expected behaviour or is there some way for Vault to
"ignore?" the temporary copy on disk. I imagine it is and my only option
is to up the "maximum backup copies" on the master.

anybody been down this road before ?.

thanks.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Remote library

2007-08-07 Thread Paul Keating
you can make either of the media servers at the remote site the "robotic
control host".
depending on your connectivity between sites, you may even be able to
use the master at your main site to control the robot.
then you can connect the tapes to your media servers in the same way you
do with the drives and media servers at your main site.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Hardware replacement on Solaris Master

2007-08-07 Thread bobbyrjw
Yes.

Have all of your SAN zoning done on the replacement server before the switch
over. May save tons of time later.

Make sure the new master has host/DNS entries to the media servers and clients.

Stop all NB processes in the environment that the master controls. If you have
your images database on a SAN drive, the switch is very easy. Just unmount the
file system, mount the file system on the new master, bring the new master up
as the old master name WITHOUT letting the scheduler start. Configure your
tapes/library control paths. Test the robot/drives with robtest. Then you are
good to go.

I have done this several times. Not a hard task provided you do all of the
connectivity on the new master before you start the switch over.

2007-08-07 Thread DULLAART, Rob ONL
Well uhmm

I just returned from holiday, and I guess my brain is still on holiday.

But my question was originally or should have been: is there a plug-in
for Oracle on a Solaris 10 x86?

Indeed the OS is backed up and working.

When I do the installation for the plug-in, this is my output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] $ update_dbclients Oracle -ClientList x

The following clients with the OS type listed were skipped

due to one of the following reasons:

  1. they are non-UNIX clients (which cannot be installed

 or upgraded from the server)

  2. there is no specified database agent software

 available for that type of client

  3. the matching database agent software was not

 loaded on the server

Client Name - OS Type

-

wawa - Solaris_x86_10

So I am searching for the compatibility list on this subject, but I
can't find it.

Backup Exec does comes with an ExecView type reporting feature that
holds data in a SQL type database. it is fairly easy to install and
configure.

Personally, I use a vbscript/msaccess/crystal report custom solution
because at the time we had multiple versions globally and not all
versions use the same ExecView setup, yet I wanted everything to be on 1

[Veritas-bu] can netbackup be moved from solaris to linux

2007-08-07 Thread mark wragge
is it possible to move netbackup from a solaris server to a windows server?

  the main goal is to be able to recover the data that has been backed up by
the solaris 5.1 netbackup server using the windows 5.1 netbackup server. it is
just the data that is on the tapes that is required. the policies, tape
libraries etc are not important.

  Is is possible to scan in a tape from the solaris netbackup server to the
catalog of the win nbu server and recover the data?

[Veritas-bu] Strange Netbackup/Library Behavior

2007-08-07 Thread dbwallis

I'm having a problem with my Netbackup system that's causing some jobs to fail,
and I don't understand what's going on. Here's the basic sequence of events:

Backup window arrives

2 policies fire off, policy A loads 4 volumes, policy B loads 2 (6
drives total), both have additional jobs queued

some jobs complete for both policies "A" now has 2 active jobs, "B"
has 1

none of the volumes that were mounted for the completed jobs have have
been unmounted and returned to the library

a queued job for policy B becomes active and tries to mount a volume

all tape drives still have tapes loaded, eventually the mount request
times out with error code 98

Why doesn't Netbackup unmount the tapes for completed backups and free up the
tape drive?

That's not a supported configuration - the master server must be at the highest
version.

It does, after a default of 180 seconds I believe? You can disable the
media mount timeout.

The Media Unmount Delay is set to 180 seconds, the mount delay is disabled. The

[Veritas-bu] RMAN - Duplicate Database with Veritas to new server

2007-08-07 Thread Jared Still
Earlier this year I was asking about Duplicate Database problems with
NetBackup and Oracle.
Here's the thread from the Oracle-L list. I think I asked on this list as
well.

http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/05-2007/msg00324.html

Well, it's back, and this time with a solution.

It seems I've spent a lot of time lately chasing down NetBackup
idiosyncrasies.

This is NetBackup 5.1 MP5 on Windows 2003.

If interested, read the referenced thread, it isn't very long.

Here's the solution.

This does NOT work:

RUN

{

allocate auxiliary channel C1 device type 'sbt'
parms="ENV=(NB_ORA_POLICY=ORA_client,NB_ORA_SCHED=OracleBackup,NB_ORA_CLIENT=client,NB_ORA_SERV=nbu)";

allocate auxiliary channel C2 device type 'sbt'
parms="ENV=(NB_ORA_POLICY=ORA_client,NB_ORA_SCHED=OracleBackup,NB_ORA_CLIENT=client,NB_ORA_SERV=nbu)";

set until time "to_date('08/07/2007 06:08:00','mm/dd/ hh24:mi:ss')";

DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO ORCL;

}

RMAN-00571: ===

RMAN-00569: === ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===

RMAN-00571: ===

RMAN-03002: failure of Duplicate Db command at 08/07/2007 13:41:22

RMAN-03015: error occurred in stored script Memory Script

ORA-19507: failed to retrieve sequential file,
handle="APP_T20070806_db_s1075_p1_t629896012", parms=""

ORA-27029: skgfrtrv: sbtrestore returned error

ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:

   Backup file not found in NetBackup
catalog

RMAN> **end-of-file**

This however, DOES work:

RUN

{

allocate auxiliary channel C1 device type 'sbt';

allocate auxiliary channel C2 device type 'sbt';

send
"NB_ORA_POLICY=ORA_client,NB_ORA_SCHED=OracleBackup,NB_ORA_CLIENT=client,NB_ORA_SERV=nbu";

set until time "to_date('08/07/2007 06:08:00','mm/dd/ hh24:mi:ss')";

DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO ORCL;

}

Setting up the parameters with the ALLOCATE CHANNEL command does not work
with DUPLICATE
DATABASE and NetBackup.

Using the SEND command to set the parameters does work.

This is a problem that has been reported in the past on MetaLink, and I
thought Veritas had it fixed, as
it does work now for making backups and with automatic channels.

Apparently they missed a spot.

[Veritas-bu] RMAN: Another Veritas Idiosyncrasy

2007-08-07 Thread Jared Still
Earlier this year I ran into a problem configure RMAN automatic channels for
use with NetBackup.

http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/03-2007/msg00707.html

It seems the solution is rather simple.

This command works:

configure channel device type 'sbt' parms="BLKSIZE=1048576,ENV=(NB
_ORA_CLIENT=ordevdb01,NB_ORA_POLICY=ORA_test_ts03,NB_ORA_SERV=rsysnbu,NB_ORA_SCHED=OracleBackup)";

This command does not work:

configure channel device type 'sbt'
parms="BLKSIZE=1048576,env=(NB_ORA_CLIENT=ordevdb01,NB_ORA_POLICY=ORA_test_ts03,NB_ORA_SERV=rsysnbu,NB_ORA_SCHED=OracleBackup)";

Actually both commands execute properly. The problem occurs when trying to
make a backup.

If the 2nd configure command is used, any attempt to backup with the
automatic channel
will result in an ORA-27209.

Do you see the difference in the 2 commands?

The one that works has ENV in uppercase, while it is 'env' in the
non-working one.

This must be an issue with the Veritas MML, as this problem does not occur
when
using the dummy tape interface.

The case of ENV does not matter when making backups to disk.

Lower case 'env' worked in 5.1 MP3, but does not work as of MP5 (don't know
about MP4)

Not documented anywhere, at least not in official docs.

Yes, this would be a fully supportable operation. Create a brand new
Windows master server environment and then import the tapes on the Windows
server. Depending on how many tapes you, however, this could take a long
time. What some people do is to create a new environment and run the 2 in
parallel for a while. Then after a significant number of tapes have expired
from the old environment, do an import on the remainder long-term tapes.
Technically, this isn't a catalog "move" - it's a new environment with
imported catalog data.
