[Veritas-bu] Solaris 10 - kernel tuning

2008-05-15 Thread Dominik Pietrzykowski

People,

This is more of a correction to one of my old posts:

I believe I have previously posted that you should not put any tuning
parameters in /etc/system for solaris 10

Turns out I am wrong, if you have a busy media server and it gets shared
memory allocation errors (89s), I recommend

the following:

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=256

or:

set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=512

here's the technote:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/295295.htm

Thanks go to Brook from support who helped me out on this one.

You may also need to play around with projmod, which is whay I originally
thought you don't need /etc/system anymore. Also when you read the Sun docs
that's the impression you get but in practice it's not 100% true.

Here's some prctl output from our emdia server:

project.max-shm-memory

privileged 16.0GB - deny
-

system 16.0EBmax deny
-

project.max-shm-ids

privileged512 - deny
-

system 16.8M max deny
-

Any questions, shoot me a mail.

Regards,

Dominik

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU 5.1 MP5 - solaris 10

2008-05-15 Thread Dominik Pietrzykowski

There is a patch for this that fixed it in the end so you don't need to
worry about it. If you have patched to the latest rev of solaris you should
be OK, can't remember what the patch id is. Be careful to make sure you
don't get SUN to update netbackup as the patch bundle included them last
patch release we ran.

Be sure to put an entry in /etc/system concerning tcp_fusion
We upgraded from hpux to solaris 10 a few months ago and had issues

None that I can think of, I remember upgrading from Solaris to 10 and
some of my older 1gbps fiber cards no longer worked, but the good thing
with Solaris 10 is many of tunables in /etc/system (for solaris 8) are
not needed with Solaris 10, what type of HW is it running on?

Did you use the "-cn" option to do it or allow it to dupliate from the
default primary image (which copy 2 became after you expired copy 1)?

FWIW, I found a windows batch file reference to the command that use the
"-cn" option and the windows command line reference has the option
available.

Yes it can. On 6.0 I imported some old DLT media. Ran a copy from DLT
(Copy 1) to LTO (Copy 2.) Then I expired the copy 1 and duplicated from
copy two to copy 3 (total of 3) which became the new copy 1. If copy
#1 is missing, any duplication you make becomes copy 1. (and I would
assume 2 3 4 etc... the lowest available copy number.)

Re: [Veritas-bu] HPUX catalog images are huge

2008-05-15 Thread Jeff Cleverley

Justin Piszcz wrote:

On Thu, 15 May 2008, Jeff Cleverley wrote:

Greetings,

I just found out that a new 6.5.1 installation I set up in Singapore
filled up the database. The new database file system is 3x larger
than the 5.0 server this replaced. We did a new server installation
and not an upgrade migration so the database was clean.

When I went looking at the disk usage I found most of the disk space
being used by images on 3 hpux servers. Two of the servers are
network clients and the other is an Enterprise client backing up over
the SAN. The space used by the hpux Enterprise client is 5x the
amount of space used by a linux Enterprise client with roughly the
same amount of storage and used inodes. The linux box is probably the
more heavily used system and should have a similar rate of change, if
not more, than the hpux servers.

The sizes were roughly 9 gig for the linux client and 45 gig on the
hpux client. This includes compressing data after 15 days. The old
5.0 database file system was only a 40 gig file system and everything
fit using compression after 30 days. This means my image usage has
increased by about 6X

The only changes that I know were made between the old environment
and the new is that TIR with move detection was implemented. This
was applied to all clients and not just hpux. Other than that,
everything else is the same. Any ideas why the hpux images are so
large? Thanks,

Hi Jeff, what is your logging set to, there is all sorts of logging
with 6.x, I am not sure about 6.5, but with 6 if you don't turn much
of the logging off it will fill up the disk exactly as you described.

There is also PBX logging, what logs in particular are growing?

/opt/VRTS*/logs?
/usr/openv/logs?
/usr/openv/netbackup/logs?
/usr/openv/debug/*?

There are many logs in 6.x, which are growing too fast for you?

Justin.

Justin,

It isn't the logs that are running wild, it is the images under
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images. Below is the du of the 4 main servers:

9356676 agt604
29669696agt601
40349584agt602
48716372agt603

The first server is is comparable in used space and activity as the last
one. The first one is linux and the last one is hpux. The third one
down (agt602) primarily houses the tools and not much active design
data. The tools software doesn't change very much so there shouldn't be
a high rate of change.

I have opened a call with Veritas but have not heard anything back yet.
I wondered if there might be some issue with the TIR on the hpux side.
It seems like early on (version 3.4 maybe) I ran into an issue with
that. The TIR file was getting corrupted somehow and it basically
started doing a full backup every night because it didn't like the TIR
file. None of the client file systems have filled up or are full to
cause this type of problem. I'll have to try and dig up some image
information and see if it looks like it is doing that.

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: [Veritas-bu] Re : Re : how to centralize all exluce_list ?

2008-05-15 Thread Kevin Miele
All, Here is my script along with the readme. It's a long one

/
BEGIN README.

NetBackup File Exclude Script, for Windows
Created by: Kevin Miele

Overview:
The NetBackup_UpdateExcludeList.vbs file provides a way for Windows
system administrators to quickly and easily update the NetBackup file
exclusion list on one or more servers. The script uses WMI to connect
to the registry of the specified machines and modifies the following
registry value:
Key Name:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\Netbackup\CurrentVersion\Config
Value Name:Exclude

•Note: You must have administrative rights on the server to update
the registry.

The script updates the Exclude value with the files specified in the
file exclude list input file. The script does not overwrite the
registry, it appends to the existing list. If the file already exists
in the registry then it will not write that file to it again.

Input Files:
The script requires 2 input files, a Server list and a File Exclude list
The Server list can contain a list of servers or if you want to run
this on the local machine, you can simply place a period, ".", in the
file.

Example: The Standard file exclusion list is as follows:

Create a text file with entries such as these:

Perflib_Perfdata_*.dat
C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris
Agent\Tasks\AeXTaskSchedulerLock\taskSchedulerLock.tmp
C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Software Delivery\pkgdlvlk.tmp
VSPCache*.vsp
Pagefile.sys
\bmc_data\*
*.tmp

Example: The SQL Standard file exclusion list contains these
additional exclusions:
*.ldf
*.mdf

SERVER LIST:
create a text file with list of servers you want to perform the change on.

example:
server1
server2
server3
10.10.10.10

Output Files:
The script also creates two output files, an output log and an error log.

Script Usage:
c:\windows\system32\cscript.exe
c:\temp\Netbackup_UpdateExcludeList.vbs /readonly:
/slist: /xlist: /outlog: /errlog:"

Example: c:\windows\system32\cscript.exe
c:\temp\Netbackup_UpdateExcludeList.vbs /readonly:Yes
/slist:c:\temp\serverlist.txt /xlist:c:\temp\FileExcludeList.txt
/outlog:c:\temp\Output.log /errlog:c:\temp\Error.Log

Arguments: All arguments, except for /?, are required.

/?Shows the usage screen

/readonly:Sets the script to perform processes in readonly mode
Yes – Write changes to registry
No – Only read the registry

/slist:Server List file
- Can contain a list of servers or a period, "." for the local server
- Define both path and file name

/xlist:File Exclude List file
- Contains a list of files or paths to exclude in Netbackup for
the clients listed in the server list file.
- Define both path and file name

/outlog:Output Log file
- Contains all output of the script.
- Define both path and file name

/errlog:Error Log file
- Contains only errors produced by the script
- Define both path and file name

NOTE: A .cmd file can be created to alleviate the need for typing the
arguments repeatedly.

Script Standard and Log Output:

•Note: In this example Readonly is set to 'Yes'. This simply reads
the registry and nothing more.
In order to actually make changes to the registry the Readonly
argument must be set to 'No'.
•The log file is comma delimited so that you can import it into
Excel easily.

Hello,

Is there anyone who can confirm or deny that the -cn switch for the
bpduplicate command only works on Unix and not on Windows?

Thanks

Hi Jeff, what is your logging set to, there is all sorts of logging with
6.x, I am not sure about 6.5, but with 6 if you don't turn much of the
logging off it will fill up the disk exactly as you described.

There is also PBX logging, what logs in particular are growing?

/opt/VRTS*/logs?
/usr/openv/logs?
/usr/openv/netbackup/logs?
/usr/openv/debug/*?

There are many logs in 6.x, which are growing too fast for you?

Justin.

None that I can think of, I remember upgrading from Solaris to 10 and
some of my older 1gbps fiber cards no longer worked, but the good thing
with Solaris 10 is many of tunables in /etc/system (for solaris 8) are
not needed with Solaris 10, what type of HW is it running on?

all and particulary to Christopher Jay Manders and Veritas-bu

with the
command bpdir, bpgp and ( bpgetconfig for windows ) this perl script copy the
bp.conf and all exclude_lists located on the clients to the master server in
the
/FILES directory.
The copy on the master server allows to analyze more simply
all files

Many Thanks,

Didier BRUN.

Re: [Veritas-bu] how to centralize all exluce_list ?

2008-05-15 Thread Mark.Donaldson
Well, this is true if you define "bug" as "something I don't like".

It's by design, not a bug. The exclude list in Windows is buried in the
registry, that's why bp[gs]etconfig is used for it. Unix, of course, is file
based and all the standard file transfer methods are viable answers.

Centralized exclude lists would be too broad - unless you got into some strange
naming scheme. If it were on the destination media server, then every block
would have to be backed up and then excluded at the destination. That'd be too
network intrusive.

Policy-based exclude lists might be nice but you'd still have to have another
list on your client for oddball stuff. Certainly the clients in my standard
unix sets are too varied to allow a centralized list on even a policy level.

There's a couple solutions to this, some of which aren't very fun but will work.

1. Create a ssh trust relationship to your clients from your master, use scp
pull & push these files.
2. use alternate client bpbackup & bprestore to transport files
3. bpgp works on earlier versions of NB (this was my old method)

...ftp, rcp, tftp, all sorts of stuff. It's just files.

Thanks Mikael,

bpgetconfig do not work on unix !

I think this is a bug from Netbackup to have exclude_list file located on
the client !
The second bug is that the bpcoverage do not analyze exclude_list file !

The solution is may to not use exclude_list file !

Thanks to all

[Veritas-bu] HPUX catalog images are huge

2008-05-15 Thread Jeff Cleverley

Greetings,

I just found out that a new 6.5.1 installation I set up in Singapore
filled up the database. The new database file system is 3x larger than
the 5.0 server this replaced. We did a new server installation and not
an upgrade migration so the database was clean.

When I went looking at the disk usage I found most of the disk space
being used by images on 3 hpux servers. Two of the servers are network
clients and the other is an Enterprise client backing up over the SAN.
The space used by the hpux Enterprise client is 5x the amount of space
used by a linux Enterprise client with roughly the same amount of
storage and used inodes. The linux box is probably the more heavily
used system and should have a similar rate of change, if not more, than
the hpux servers.

The sizes were roughly 9 gig for the linux client and 45 gig on the hpux
client. This includes compressing data after 15 days. The old 5.0
database file system was only a 40 gig file system and everything fit
using compression after 30 days. This means my image usage has
increased by about 6X

The only changes that I know were made between the old environment and
the new is that TIR with move detection was implemented. This was
applied to all clients and not just hpux. Other than that, everything
else is the same.

Any ideas why the hpux images are so large?

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: [Veritas-bu] vnetd on NB_6.5

2008-05-15 Thread Jeff Lightner
It doesn't since 6.0.

In fact in newer systems I've only opened the vnetd port in firewall and
NBU has figured out to only use that. You don't even have to tell it to
do that in the GUI any more.

I just upgraded to 6.5 from 5.1. Backup and restores are working

I want to tighten up the Master Server firewall. In 6.5 in order for

to work a non-reserve port setting is always used. This is on the Host

found the warning in both of the Administration manuals. So what
is the point of using vnetd if the firewall has to be opened for
