[Veritas-bu] NBU Flashbackup Cache Parition

2008-07-14 Thread dy018

Hi Guys,

Anyone of you has experience in flashbackup using solaris advanced client. Is
the cache partition a mandatory requirement for Flashbackup? If it is, then
anyone know the workaround? Thanks

Regards

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU & Java GUI authentication on AIX

2008-07-14 Thread Curtis Preston
My humble opinion, FWIW...

This lack of functionality you've experienced will only be the first of many if
you move off of HP and onto AIX. I have nothing against AIX as an OS, but I do
know that it's always been last in the development matrix at Veritas/Symantec.
Solaris & Windows first, then HP shortly after (often at the same time), then
AIX (a distance third that often doesn't catch up). Now if you want to replace
NBU with TSM, then AIX would be a great server! (Not that I'm recommending
that, mind you.) ;)

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NBU & Java GUI authentication on AIX

We are looking at re-designing our Master/Media OS environment and have
considered AIX (currently HP-UX). We have also struggled with VxSS as
have several of you - so we have continued to rely on the non-root admin
capabilities. Our initial exposure to AIX gave us issues with the Java
GUI.

This comes from a tech note:
"At this time NetBackup does not support LDAP with AIX. As NetBackup is
compiled to work with AIX 5 (5.1, 5.2, 5.3), it has to be built against
the most common version. The AIX 5.1 (which NetBackup is complied
against) and AIX 5.2 did not (by default) contain the LDAP / PAM
authentication libraries, and this is why the NetBackup Java GUI will
not work with LDAP on AIX platforms.

If a customer is not satisfied with this feature of NetBackup and
requires NetBackup to work with LDAP and AIX, please raise an
enhancement request by visiting "

We are not allowed to give root access to the NBU admins, however SESU
is OK. We have approximately 80+ DB admins, Operations personnel, and
tape librarians that I rely on the Java GUI to control their access
using non-root admin and the auth.conf file in /opt/openv/java.

Can anyone suggest viable options that would pass the security and audit
departments. Is VxSS capable of this and is this my only option?

TIA

Brian

We use "sudo" for granting command-line privileges to NB commands to our
operators.

Used to have a menu-driven script for the general tasks for our
operators, too - just grant privs to the script.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Media writing report

2008-07-14 Thread Mark.Donaldson
what drives are being used is "vmoprcmd -d ds" or perhaps "vmoprcmd -d
ad"

kilobytes being written? Not so much.

You're going to have to mine the logs or mine the output of "bpdbjobs".
Note - multiplexed jobs need to be aggregated per device.

Is there a command that shows me what drives are being used and the
kilobytes being written? I can see it via the GUI, but I want to have
it via command line.

Thanks.

Have you tried using tpconfig? In the past, I've always configured my robots &

Is there a command that shows me what drives are being used and the
kilobytes being written? I can see it via the GUI, but I want to have
it via command line.

Thanks.

Re: [Veritas-bu] robot not enabled.

Does the OS see the robot? Check that using sgscan -- if the OS doesn't
see the changer then that's your problem.

2008-07-14 Thread Ed Wilts
This smells like a DNS issue.

On the master, do both forward and reverse DNS lookups of the client and
make sure that the resolution is working properly. Do the same thing from
the client. With 6.0MP5, DNS resolution is still strictly enforced.

Im at Sungard testing DR.

I just ran into an issue I've never seen before.

The master aix 5.3, 6.0 mp5 is fully restored and functional. The master
can perform a restore to itself and the master can push restores to
clients.

The problem, any restore initiated from the windows client fails, just
hangs - I can cancel restore and restart the restore the master server the
restore runs fine, no issues.

client and master can ping each other, bpclncmd runs fine and so on.

Thanks.

[Veritas-bu] robtest

2008-07-14 Thread selwyn

Whenever something stops working the first question I ask is what has changed.

You stated the device path changed. Does this mean that you are now using a
set of different hba's? Are both hba's the same? If they are different you
should consider a a firmware update on the hba that is not working correctly
and a driver update as well.

[Veritas-bu] Preventing Last week from taking priority in calendar scheduling

2008-07-14 Thread Navarro, Eddy
Hi All,

I'm currently setting up a policy using Calendar scheduling in NBU
6.5.1, and I would like a particular job to run on every Friday of the
month EXCEPT the 4th Friday. So I check off all the Fridays in the
Calendar Schedule tab except for the 4th week. However, when I select
"Last", it overrides my deselection of the 4th Friday for those months
that only have 4 Fridays. But if I deselect both 4th and Last, then for
those months that have a 5th Friday (e.g. August 2008) then that 5th
Friday is missed.

What I would like to happen is when I select all Fridays except for the
4th week, that the scheduling should be smart enough to understand I
want that as an exception even when I have Last selected, and not select
the 4th Friday in those months where there are only 4 (e.g. July 2008).
Is this possible without having to setup exclude dates? I don't want to
have to deal with the hassle of manually setting those up.

Thanks,

Eddy

Re: [Veritas-bu] drive/tape failure ?

2008-07-14 Thread Justin Piszcz
Check the error codes on the robot if you can.
Check how many times the tape has been mounted.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. read and write errors on the tape drive.
Check for errors in $NETBACKUP/db/error for that tape ID.
Check how long the tape drive has gone without cleaning (tpclean -L)

There are MANY things you can do..
