Re: [Veritas-bu] commited memory growth on RHEL 4 and NBU 6.5.2

2008-10-15 Thread Dean
That's interesting Jon. I'll look into nbevtmgr.

But one thing I forgot to mention in my previous email is that
restarting NBU does not clear up the issue for me. That makes me think
it might be something to do with PBX or ICS.

I posted a question just like this back on January 7, 2008, and the

running on 32 bit linux, and this process seems to consume resources
slowly, but I don't have graphs to show its progress.

Restarting NBU (all of it or just nbevtmgr) seems to fix the problem.
I just checked it now, and after 23 days, it is sitting on 2g of ram.
Restarting it fixed a lot of things related to performance, and my swap
 utilization went way down.

 I'm 6.5.2a.

 -Jon

 Hello folks,

We are running NBU 6.5.2 on RHEL 4 on Intel X86_64. The master server
is a dedicated NBU master, there is one dedicated NBU Media Server
(also RHEL 4 x86_64) and several RHEL 5 x86_64 SAN Media Servers.

The master has 8 GB of RAM.

I am seeing strange constant growth in commited memory usage, on the
Master server only. Apparently this is memory being requested by an
allocation, but not actually being used.

It doesn't appear to be causing any problems, other than that memory
 utilisation graphs look pretty whacky

 http://img49.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nbumemoryusagela5.png

This is not occuring on any of the media servers. I can't determine
what process is allocating the memory.

It's a standard RHEL 4 install with no other applications installed of note.

I didn't actually notice it until our Linux admin installed this Munin
monitoring tool which produced the graphs linked to above, at which
time the commited memory was over 300GB. As you can see from the
graphs, a reboot obviously clears it all out.

 Has anyone else seen this?

 Cheers,
 Dean

All,

Using the GUI, I am trying to view the port ranges of a client on a

and when I go from Netbackup Management -- Host Properties -- Clients
I get an hourglass that does nothing...it hangs.

I am wondering if I there is a command line that lets me see the same
thing. I want to confirm the port ranges and see if Random port

Running 6.5, Solaris master server.

Thanks.

I had that error a while back and it was some bad labels, we got 10 new
cleaning cartridges with labels like this CLN09cu and wither NetBackup
or my scalar I2000 didn't like the labels. When I removed the cleaning
cartridges from the library the issue went away, I tried multiple times
and kept coming up with the same problem. I ended up using a L2 label
that used a different prefix than my media.

Could you please expand a little bit on point 3?

We've also experienced problems with nbsl (as I described on this mailing list

What problem did the PEM bundle fix?

What was wrong with bpdulicate? (A coworker asked me yesterday evening about
Vault periodically taking inordinately longer than it should in one of our
environments, even though everything appears to complete correctly, so I'm
hoping to get a smoking gun for free here... :^)

We are running Netbackup 6.5 with HP/UX 11.23 on IA64 hardware. We have 3
Master servers and 3 dedicated media servers. To ease use and administration
we segregated the environments (1 for Unix (Solaris, HP/UX, AIX, Linux), 1 for
Windows (2003,2008, Etc.), and our Dev/Test which comprises a mixture of
everything.)

We have sucessfully upgraded our Dev/Test environment to 6.52a with several
caveats.

1. Don't do this without engaging Symantec. (This will take several hops to get
to the right people)

2. Don't do it to your production environment.

3. We needed to get 3 engineering binaries to make it useable. (NBSL, PEM
bundle #2, and bpduplicate binary. (I can go into the gory details as a sidebar
if needed)

4. We also needed to replace versioninfo because it kept core dumping.

This was a long painful process to get it right, but we are very happy with the
6.52a environment we have now. We have done a lot of testing and we are
confident we can roll this out to the Unix and Windows production environments
without incident.

As far as the hardware/OS portion of the equation...it's solid

2008-10-15 Thread Jon Bousselot
When I upgraded to 6.x, I had to completely remove the java admin app
from my admin windows workstations. Doing the upgrade apparently left
something behind that didn't work so well. You could see most of the
features, but getting properties on certain things, or examining the
policies would cause it to hang or error out.

I think the linux java admin workstation upgrades worked fine... but I
can't remember what I did. It was a long time ago.

[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 6 MP7 update on Clustered Media Servers help

2008-10-15 Thread Dave Markham
Guys im updating a NBU 6Mp4 Solaris environment to Mp7.

I have Master (solaris9 MP4)

Performing it on the Master first obviously and then was going to
remotely install on 3 SSO Media servers (part of an oracle RAC). It says
this is possible in the patch readme but i haven't performed a remote mp
pack install before (apart from network based clients using
update_clients). Is it just an option when you run the mp install script?

If this remote upgrade works fine then i want to adopt the approach on 2
further SSO Media servers (both at nbu6 mp4) which have a clustered nbu
install using VCS. I don't have root access to the machines see (dont'
ask), but i can freeze the netbackup resource group under VCS as the
role access i have allows me access to do that.

My question is can this be done as follows :-

1. Install mp7 on master (clt + solaris)
2. Connect to inactive cluster media server
3. Freeze netbackup cluster resource
4. Remote install from the master to the inactive cluster node
5. Remote install from the master to the active cluster node
6. Unfreeze cluster resource.

Anything else i need to do?

Cheers

[Veritas-bu] NDMP restore problem.

2008-10-15 Thread Rajmund Siwik
 Hello,

We have a restore problem with NDMP since we upgraded to 6.5.1 2 weeks ago.
Not all restores but for some of them we get this error:

10/14/2008 14:50:01 - begin reading
10/14/2008 18:39:33 - Error ndmpagent (pid=18519) ndmp_mover_get_state failed,
status = 18 (NDMP_XDR_DECODE_ERR)
10/14/2008 18:39:33 - Error ndmpagent (pid=18519) connection 0x8182870
ndmp_message_process_one_failed, status = NDMP_ILLEGAL_STATE_ERR
10/14/2008 18:39:33 - Error ndmpagent (pid=18519) eof is set - connection
0x8182870

At this point job just hangs.
If we point to a file in a directory we want to restore there is no problem. We
can restore top level ie /vol/vol0/.
However if we go down the path a select directory there above error appears.

Has anybody seen this?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Inventory robot failed 228 requested slot does not exist in robot

2008-10-15 Thread Rusty . Major
This sounds like NetBackup is only passing along what the library is
telling it. So I'd take NBU out of the picture and try to confirm if it's
happening at the library level and go from there.
Isn't that library controlled by ACSLS? If so, check the acs event log and
also see what you get when you do an audit within acs. Are there any error
messages on the library itself?
