[Veritas-bu] Netbackup backing up a dpm server

2009-03-13 Thread bruceephx

I am backing up my DPM 2006 server as if it were a giant file server. I am
using VSS to backup open files. I am backing up each replica individually. I
have up to 8 streams (35 replicas) multiplexed to a tape target for the Full
because it keeps a tape drive busy enough. For INC backups I send it to a dssu
then duplicate to tape. I also backup the DPM server without the replicas as I
would with any other Windows server (don't cross mount points).

I tried to backup some of the bigger replicas using Flashbackup as each replica
is in its own volume. But NBU Flashbackup doesn't like the GUID in the volume
reference. I recently found if I also assign a drive letter to the replica
volume, I can then use Flashbackup of the volumes. So I haven't tested it for
performance yet. Thats for after I get back from vacation. 8)

[Veritas-bu] question on client names

2009-03-13 Thread judy_hinchcliffe
At the start we added client names to netbackup as just the short name

Now they have been added different domains so now I got server that are
a little scattered

When I go to do updates I have to do each domain as a group.

Not knowing what domain a server is in have to do some commands and make
a list.

So I was just wondering. When you add servers to netbackup do you use
short name or FQDN.

If short how do you handle installs on the different domains?

Thanks Geoff

Thanks for pointing out that difference .. I didn't add the Exchange backup
totals to the Month-end Fulls.
This would be the same amount as Weekly but only a longer retention.

Just seems like a very large amount for some reason (240GB). Seems I am missing
something here.

Thanks

Hello All,

I am trying to use the formula for calculating the catalog and not sure about
the results. Has anyone Calculated the catalog using the formula in the
Performance Tuning guide?

Can you please explain how to properly do this?

1 ? "When the formula states total backups" ... is this for one Full backup of
all data for one day?

 Schedule

Incremental - daily - retention 5 weeks

Weekend Full - retention 6 weeks (only first 3 weekends) Month-End - retention
1 year (last Saturday of the month)

Below is my attempt to calculate this. Any clarification would be appreciated.

-

614GB data back up * 3 Full Backups (1842GB) * 2 months retention (3684GB)

= 3.5 TB

Full

447GB data back up * 1 Full Monthly Backup (447GB) * 12 months retention

(5364GB) = 5.2 TB

Month End Full

122GB

incremental * 30 incr backups monthly (3660GB) * 5 week retention (1.25

months) 4605GB = 3.5 TB

--

3.5 TB incr

3.5 TB Weekly Full

5.2 TB Month-End Full

= 12.2 TB = Netbackup catalog size (2%) = 240GB Catalog space

This does not seem right???

Thanks

Jack

I agree, this message means you have the wrong set of files for this
server

AND.

The NB_6.5.3 looks like a master/media install
You have to have the NB_CLT_6.5.3 as well that has to be installed
first.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Problem installing 6.5.3 client on RHEL 5 server

2009-03-13 Thread Jeff Lightner
Not doing 6.5.3 yet but from my UNIX (HP-UX) master to install on RHEL5
I do the following:

1) Create a Client policy so it knows what version of the client
software (Linux, HP-UX etc...) to install. I select RedHat 2.6 as OS
for the that. I do it in the Java GUI.

2) From command line on the master I run (note this is all one line):
/bin/sh -c LC_ALL=american; export LC_ALL;
"/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/install_client_files" ssh ""

Note that you need to insure you've installed xinetd package before
doing this. Run rpm -q xinetd to see if it is there. If not run yum
install xinetd.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Problem installing 6.5.3 client on RHEL 5 server

2009-03-13 Thread Tim Hoke
NB_6.5.3 is the server patch. If this is a pure client only system,
then you need the NB_CLT_6.5.3 patch.

The error happens because the installer is looking for a /usr/openv/
netbackup/version file. That file only exists in servers. The client
version is kept at /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/version.
