Not sure that you can, when a media server
starts working on a tape, that tape belongs to that media server.

I know there is now an option to share
media

Change Media Owner dialog box

  Overview

Use this dialog box to change the owner of the
  selected volume.
For media sharing, the media owner defines who
  can write to the volume.
Valid only if a server group owns the selected
  volume.

But in reading this it still looks like only 1 media sever can write
  to a volume.

  Why so many media servers?

Configuring server groups for media sharing
Note: The access control feature of Sun
StorageTeck ACSLS controlled robots is not compatible with media sharing.
Media sharing restricts volume access by the requesting hosts IP address. Use
caution when you implement media sharing in an ACSLS environment.
You can configure server groups that can
  share media. A server group
is a group of NetBackup servers that are used for a common purpose. A media sharing group is a server group
that shares media for write purposes. A media sharing group can contain the
  following:
  •NetBackup
  master server
  •NetBackup
  media servers
  •NDMP tape
  servers
  •Virtual
host names of NetBackup media servers in a cluster
Servers can be in more than one group. All
members of a server group must have the same NetBackup master server. Only
NetBackup 6.5 and later systems can be in server groups.
  Media sharing provides the following
  benefits:
  •Increases
media utilization by reducing the number of partially full media.
  •Reduces
media-related expenses because fewer media are required and fewer media are
  vaulted (NetBackup Vault option).
  •Reduces
administrative overhead because you inject fewer scratch media into the
  robotic library.
  •Increases
media life because media are mounted fewer times. Media are not repositioned
and unmounted between write operations from different media servers.
  Reducing media mounts requires appropriate
hardware connectivity between the media servers that share media and the
drives that can write to that media. Appropriate hardware connectivity may
include Fibre Channel hubs or switches, SCSI multiplexors, or SCSI-to-fibre
  bridges.
To configure media sharing, you must do the
  following:
  •Ensure
the appropriate connectivity between and among the media servers and robots
  and drives.
  •Optionally,
configure NetBackup for media sharing by setting the master server Enable Unrestricted Media Sharing for All Media
  Servers host property.
  For more information, see Media
  properties.
  •Optionally,
configure the volume pools to use for media sharing by setting the Maximum number of partially full media
  property for those pools.
  For more information, see Adding
a new volume pool or Changing
the properties of a volume pool.
  •Create the media
sharing groups as described in this section.
If you allow unrestricted allow media
sharing in your NetBackup environment, you do not have to create media
sharing groups. Unrestricted media sharing is set by using the master server Enable Unrestricted Media Sharing for All Media
  Servers host property.
  •Configure backup
policies that use the volume pools and media sharing groups by setting the Policy Volume Pool and Media Owner properties of the backup
  policies.
  For more information, see Policy
  Attributes tab.

[Veritas-bu] NetBackup for Oracle 6.5.3

2009-05-21 Thread Jack . Forester
Hi all,

I'm getting prepared to take the 6.5 leap (from 6.0, so not that big of a
deal), but I'm wondering about UNIX database add-ons and release updates.
We're using the oracle agent, and I see that there is no 6.5.3 for the
Oracle agent, only 6.5.2. My understanding is that these add-ons must be
at the same level as the client. Did anything change in 6.5 so that the
add-ons can be at a lower patch level than the client (6.5, 6.5.1, or
6.5.2 agent with a 6.5.3 client) or are we going to be stuck at a 6.5.2
client if we want to use the Oracle agent?

The is no difference between the Eval version and the current version. Alway
install the latest. Adding a real license is done in the GUI probably under
help.
Installing a new or same version will not destroy the configuration. Though
features that you may have been testing under the eval may not work without
the license.

It attempts to re-install and not sure if this is going to overwrite the

Hey guys

I don't normally work with Backup Exec so I am not sure how to enter a recently
purchased serial number into an evaluation copy of Backup Exec 12.x to make it
a licensed copy without removing any of the existing settings? It attempts to
re-install and not sure if this is going to overwrite the settings. Any
assistance would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Backup Exec 12.5 License Installation

2009-05-21 Thread Jimenez, Daniel
Koping

I am looking to find additional information to make sure that my settings will
not be overwritten once I install the new key. I choose the Install Options
and License Keys on this Media Server and add the Symantec Backup Exec for
Windows Servers key and hit next, it automatically has 3 options chosen, Tape
Device Drivers, Online Documentation and Enable Robotic Library Support. So
should I remove the three options and continue through the install so only the
key is updated? Will this key I enter encompass the robotic library support,
remote agents for windows and Backup exec for windows servers?

Daniel,
Open BackupExec 12.5 console.
Tool - Install Options and License Keys on this Media server ... you can
enter your key there.
There is a Backup Exec Forum in http://www.backupcentral.com/. You can get much
more resources there.

Thanks

[Veritas-bu] Successful Backup Report

2009-05-21 Thread NBU

I need the number of clients which are successfully backed up between a period
of time say 18:00 hrs. to 18:00 hrs.

Currently i am using the following script
-
grep Policy: /tmp/bp_reports|uniq |grep -v Storage Lifecycle Policy:|grep -v
Test|grep -v CATALOG_BACKUP|grep -v Backupsetup |uniq|wc -l
-

but this gives me the result POLICY wise. Even if i have multiple clients under
1 policy it gives me result as 1 but i need a script which will give me the
report client wise.
