Re: [Veritas-bu] Backing up SQL Express

2009-09-30 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Morning John
You do need a SQL License on the Master, and the Policy must be a SQL
application policy for the backup.

Failing this, you can configure SQL Server to do offline backups to a
flatfile on a local or Network drive. Then NetBackup treats it as a
single file and backs the file up normally.
Just bear in mind that there are some limitations on backups and
recovery with NBU and SQL Server Express, one of them being partial
backups not being fully supported, due to limitations in SQL Express.

However, I do believe its covered in the SQL Admin Guide. It can also be
found here if it helps...

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Backing up SQL Express

Hello All;

After recieving operation not allowed during this time period(199)
errors while trying to backup an SQL 2005 Express database. I'm assuming
that Veritas NBU 6.5.4 will not backup SQL Express.

Would me my assumption be correct?

Yes, the policy type is NDMP. I also have another windows server 2003, not

Any other suggestions please?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Scalar i2000 FC question

2009-09-30 Thread william . d . brown
I can only comment on the library *with* the IO blades as that is how
we've always run it. So I really cannot say if the claims about the speed
buffering to even out data rates to the drives stack up. Nor can I say if
they are a bottleneck, though we are about to use 4 x LTO4 on each 4Gb
blade, so maybe we'll find out ;-)

What I can say they provide is excellent diagnostics and control. My
understanding is that with direct connect drives you don't get the ability
to reset and power cycle drives (could be wrong). With the blades we can
reset fibre ports, restart blades and do a lot of poking around that you
can't do with a drive. The drives are only having to run FC-AL within the
cabinet, so it's very lo-tech for the drives, insulated from the SAN.

I'm not sure how you manage partitions with no blades - how do you present
the robot controller LUN? The physical library then uses the fibre port
on the main controller card, not sure how multiple hosts would do that.
With the blades we just present the robot control LUN for each partition
down whatever fibre we like (with at least one of the partition's drives).

I don't know how many people use HRS - we found that it cannot work with
the Sun Leadville drivers, it required the native qla2300 drivers and that
was not an option for us. I'm sure HRS requires the IO blades.

A downside is that it can be rather mind-bending to configure them
initially.

As I remember you can not put more than two LTO4 drives to the blades.
Ok, you can but if you feed your drives with full speed .

Thanks for the info! This library will only be attached to a single
server
so we're going with a direct connection. There will be multiple FC
connections, so now I know to distribute them across all IO blades with
 attached drives.

 Thanks,

What version of the firmware are you using ?

[Veritas-bu] Symantec Device Driver Package or Official HP Vendor Drivers

2009-09-30 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Hi everyone,
Back in the early days of 3.x of NetBackup, there was always a
requirement to use the Veritas Approved Drivers for NetBackup.

With 6.0 and onwards, is this still a real requirment? I have been going
ahead and using the latest HP / IBM Vendor drivers where required, and
to date, have never had a problem.
Just wanted to get an idea if there is a preference or is this now
considered an option if you do not have the drivers available?

Thanks all

Simon

Hi,

The 6.5.4 server software seems to be an improvement over earlier 6.5.x
releases. However, for the client (if you backup windows hosts/DFSR), the
6.5.3+registry hack should still be used, 6.5.4 still has problems and

[Veritas-bu] Windows 2003 Netbackup 3.6 catalog File Corruption issue

2009-09-30 Thread Anderson

I have a Windows 2003 server with SP2 installed on a Dell 1850 PowerEdge server
which has a C: partition with 136GB and an E: partition with 4.07TB. The
server has 4GB of memory. The main application on this server is Veritas
Netbackup 3.6 (with both Veritas 3.6 hot fixes installed) and it is installed
on the C: partition with the netbackup data stored on the E: partition. The
Netbackup application seems to hang daily with what looks like a catalog
corruption. My catalog file is on the C: partition (44GB Free space) and its
size is:

NTP.DB 30,184,848KB

It seems like either after the Catalog maintenance (scheduled at 8:30PM), the
catalog corruption happens. I think it happens during the catalog maintenance
, because I do not see the date on my catalog backup file increment (catalog
backup scheduled 11:30PM nightly), so I do not think the backup can take place
once the catalog file is corrupt.

Any suggestions to try to fix my catalog corruption problem?
