Subject: [Veritas-bu] Win XP client Deduplication

I have 75 windows client that I would like to backup over the wan. I
can't use DLO since we don't have a Windows Domain. I would like to do
client deduplication.

I have a few questions in order to verify what I understand.

Is there some deduplication built into NB 6.5.2/6.5.3 Win XP client?
[DKC] No, there is no deduplication in the basic client

If I have to purchase PureDisk 6.5, I have further questions.
1) If a client has two files with the same data, do both files get sent
to the Netbackup Server?
[DKC] If both files are identical the all the fingerprints will be
identical. If the fingerprint exists anywhere within the PureDisk Global
Environment, the data associated with that fingerprint will not be
backed up. Fingerprints are 128K in size. So the first file will get
backed up and the second file will simply have meta data indicating the
fingerprints that are already in the storage pool that contain that
file's data.

2) If I have two clients with the same files, do both files get sent to
the Netbackup Server?
[DKC] No. The first one that gets backed up will send the data
associated with it's fingerprints to PureDisk. The next server will see
that fingerprints already exist for its files and will not be backed up
and the metabase will associate that client's files with the appropriate
fingerprints.
3) Do I need to update the Netbackup Client to support PureDisk?
[DKC] The NetBackup 6.5 Client includes the PureDisk 6.5 Client.

Thanks
Karl

Re: [Veritas-bu] VM Master / Media Servers

2008-05-23 Thread Dave Carpe
OK.

The OS Compatibility Guide will show you that VMware supported as a
client only and then references the best practices for backing up VMware
document:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/278064

The best practices document discusses running a media server within
VMware on page 12:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/285515

This explains the problems and the fact that VMware does not support
Fibrechannel attached tape drives.

NBU PM is looking at how we can support NBU Media servers on Virtual
Machines for the future but right now, if you do it and have problems,
Tech Support will make a best effort to help but it is ultimately
unsupported.

Can you please be more specific on your massive I/O problems? Are we
talking about SCSI? Fiber? Tape? Disk? VMWare claims 60,000 I/O per
second per ESX Host (assuming your disk can keep up) and explicitly says
no tape drives for their configs. I'd assume your problems are related
to tape and not to disk?

As it turns out from Simon's response x86_64 was not correct because he
wasn't talking about Linux but rather Windows.

Here we're not doing any 64 bit Windows yet so unfortunately I can't
answer.

The fact that the 32 bit client for Linux can be made to work on 64 bit
Linux suggests there is likely a way to do it on Windows so long as it
has some sort of backwards compatibility like Linux does by installing
libraries for that purpose. At least we know hardware isn't the
limitation so if it doesn't work it would be the OS.

Yes, thats the feeling I got, but I am being strongly advised by a 3rd

And I have tested a DSU media server, and that is fine, but certainly

This is not supported.

The issue is not Symantec - it's VMware. A VMware guest can not have
access to tape drives, so you're sunk right off the bat.

It you want to test a Master/media server in a VMware guest, and use
*ONLY* disk-based storage units, I suspect that it will work. No tape
drive access though.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 5.1mp4/5 Win2k3 x64 binaries

According to the latest 5.x compatibility list
(http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/263839.htm), 64-bit support
(both for AMD64 as PC-X64 "hardware" and Itanium as PC-IA64) is present
with NetBackup 5.1MP4 and later, which is somewhat reassuring because
the Windows SAs are in the process of rolling out 64-bit Windows servers
on AMD chips at my employer.

There is one problem, though: I don't have install media more recent
than 5.1 GA (which gets installed and then MP5 layered over it through
their software distribution mechanism), which means that I don't think I
even have the 64-bit binaries.

Am I right in believing that I need to open a service call to get the
appropriate installers? (The closest I could get was
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/283089.htm, but that's just the
x64 MP5 patch, not the baseline x64 binaries.)

2007-10-29 Thread Dave Carpe
NetBackup 6.5 was one of the major themes at Vision 2007 in Las Vegas
this past June 12-14. All of the Vision presentations are available on
the Symantec Technology Network here:

http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/stn/vision/index.jsp

Of special interest on NetBackup 6.5, I would point you to these two
presentations:

Veritas NetBackup(tm) Core Product Update 6.5

Veritas NetBackup(tm) 6.5 Advanced Disk Options Deep Dive

Vision 2008 will again be in Las Vegas from June 9-12 and also in other
locations for those not in the US. Every customer of mine that has
attended has found this user conference to be a huge benefit to them, so
I would suggest you start thinking about attending if you can. You can

Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrade to 6.5 or 6.0MP4

2007-10-26 Thread Dave Carpe
Gabe,

NetBackup 6.5 is huge feature release, not a Maintenance Pack for NBU
6.0.

NBU 6.5 adds things like SAN Client, a new Open Disk API for better
support of Storage and VTL's. When PureDisk 6.5 comes out, it will
support PureDisk media servers, etc.

It is a huge feature release.

You should ask for an update from you Symantec Sales Team.

I was under the impression, from Symantas sales folks, that 6.5
essentially *was* 6.0 MP5, without any real feature adds. Did that
change somewhere along the way?

(As it happens, we're planning a hop from 5.1MP5 to 6.5 "soon"...)

Well, I'd say got to 6.0 MP5 (not MP4) since it addresses some issues in
MP4, specifically things we've had issues with.

I'm always very hesitant to move to any new software version of any
product, be it Netbackup or anything else.

But with Netbackup I've learned not to touch it until at least MP2 is
out - clearly Symantec, like most software companies, considers time to
market more important than addressing all bugs out of the gate so I
strongly suggest 6.0MP5 unless there is a feature only available in 6.5
that you absolutely must have... caveat emptor.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup 5.1 mp6

2007-02-23 Thread Dave Carpe
Bobby,

The answer is actually included in the description, since it tells you
to contact Symantec Product Support for the patch.

The reason is because it is a patch and not a maintenance pack.
Maintenance Packs go through a full and rigorous test cycle to ensure
that the patches included don't break some other feature in NetBackup or
cause some of the problem in combination.

Patches are specific bug fixes to correct a specific problem and are not
as rigorously tested until they go through that testing cycle and are
included in the next MP. Since a patch could potentially cause other
problems, Symantec's policy is to have Technical Support discuss the
issue with the customer and provide the patch if they feel it is needed.

Open a call with Tech Support at 1-800-342-0652 and talk to them about
it and they will make the patch available to you.

I need to apply this patch Symantec service request number 916932. Why
do I not see it on symantec site? Any ideas?

Veritas NetBackup 5.1 MP6 Critical Patch

There is a known issue with NetBackup 5.1 MP6 that prevents APTARE
StorageConsole from collecting some critical backup data. Below is an
overview of the symptoms and the solution.

Symptom: When upgrading to NetBackup 5.1 MP6 backups show nothing for
MBytes, MBytes/sec and number of Files in the "Backup & Restore Jobs"
report. The "Server Consumption Summary" report is also missing all of
the Mbytes backed up information.

Cause: Deployment of NetBackup Maintenance Pack 6 causes dates in the
try record to be truncated. The incorrect data is then written to the
Aptare database, causing backup data to display MBytes as 0.

Solution: Symantec has identified this issue as a bug in NBU 5.1 MP6.
They have created a patch which should correct the problem. Please
contact Symantec Product Support and refer to Symantec service request
number 916932 before installing this maintenance pack.

You can make raw backups without needing aditional license, you need
aditional license if you want restore individual files, for this you will
need a flashbackup license.

Hi All

I have a small traditional LAN based backup setup with NetBackup 5.1 . I
created a policy on my
backup server to backup a specific directory from a backup client, and
the directory sits in a
traditional UNIX file system on my backup client. My question is, when
the policy triggered, is the
data traveled from backup client to backup server is in terms of block

getting different answers from different people, please anyone clarify

Re: [Veritas-bu] encryption

2006-07-06 Thread Dave Carpe

Data written to tape is not normally
encrypted.

There is a NetBackup Encryption Option
that you can purchase on a per client basis that encrypted the data from the
client all the way to the tape. The encryption strength can be set anywhere
form 40 or 6 bit DES up to 256 bit AES (assuming you have NBU 5.1 or higher).

Bear in mind that encryption will make the
data essentially uncompressible so turn on software compression on the client
of you want it and use the uncompressed tapes drives. Since encryption (and
compression) will take place on the client, it will impact backup speed and
varies by how high the encryption is set.

The other option is look for hardware
compression between the Media server and the tape drives.

Guys,

When a backup is written to tape, is there any
type of encrypting that occurs and if not is there something within Netbackup
you can turn on to make the data encrypted.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup 3.4.1 upgrade to 6.0 ?

2006-05-30 Thread Dave Carpe
That is correct, you do have to upgrade your 3.4.1 Servers to NBU 4.5
before going to 5.X and the 6.0. Clients of course can go straight to
6.0, as long as the OS version is still supported.

Here is the document that explains what is supported:

Hi All,

I've had a quick look through the archives and didn't find any
relating to my problem.

We are looking at updating our Solaris 5.8, Netbackup 3.4.1 install
with a Sun L20 with two DLT8000 drives attached to the latest
version of Netbackup v6.

I believe I found a document that said I would need to upgrade to
4.5 first as Netbackup 5 ( at the time ) didn't support the 3.4.1
catalogue.

Can any body confirm this for me

Thanks for your time

RE: [Veritas-bu] Virtual Tape Library

2006-03-23 Thread Dave Carpe
The NetBackup Virtual tape option was originally priced in tiers with so
many TB per tier. That pricing was simplified to a price per TB.

NBU does not charge by the number of virtual drives since you can have
hundreds of virtual drives for relatively small amounts of disk storage.

Contact you local account representative or Systems Engineer if you have
questions.

That's cool. If you setup a storage unit for NDMP, can you use it for
non-NDMP backups? I have 1 tape drive connected to a Master Server
setup for NDMP and I can't backup the Master Server OS (5.0 MP3).

Thoughts?

RE: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup End-Of-Support

2005-11-02 Thread Dave Carpe
NBU 3.4 Support originally ended April 29th, 2003 and was extended a
year to April 29th 2004 to help customers migrate off of it.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/265117

NBU 4.5 Was supposed to reach End of Support on December 1, 2005 but
with the release of NBU 6.0, it has been extended to July 1, 2006.

Blimney!!! Not good! I still have a 3.4 Server, so I am guessing that's
not going to be supported full stop!

RE: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup End-Of-Support

2005-11-02 Thread Dave Carpe
Just an FYI,

End of Support does not mean Tech Support won't take calls, BTW. It
means they will make best effort to help you but you will probably be
advised to upgrade the software if you have any serious problems.

It also means no new patches will be written to correct problems in any
release that has reach End of Support.
